it's cool that Maya PLE exists; BUT why did you have to put the watermark in ALL viewports and several times!!!!ĻI het headaches of this, it's not possible to work like this. A render watermark, fine, I understand that. No problem, but why in the viewports. What's the point? It makes it just less comfortable for the user. Take a look at Softimage...

To answer your question, first Maya PLE has all of the same features that the commercial version has. Secondly you can save all your data, albeit in a format that is not transferable to a commercial license of Maya. The watermark is the primary means of preventing the use of that content commercially. We realize that not everyone will appreciate the watermark being present, most particularly those who have used the commercial, non-watermarked version of Maya. We did extensive usability testing for this program however, and our testing shows that in time it becomes less noticeable to most users. We are learning from all the feedback we are now getting on PLE, and are open to modifications if necessary.

Why is the watermark in the viewport as well as on rendered images? Maya is no longer just a tool for creating rendered images or models - the power of today's hardware means that Maya is a powerful tool for viewing 3d data in real-time or near real-time within any of the Maya viewports. Without a watermark, it would be possible to create an animation, play it back in the 3d view, and record the animation. Moreover, the watermark prevents use of Maya for commercial visualization purposes - a growing use of Maya.

Otherwise Maya PLE is 100% functional with full save capability activated. In that sense it does not directly compare with what might appear on the surface and without deeper analysis to be similar in competitive offerings. Our intention is very much to provide a true learning experience for those who want to use Maya or learn 3D, without compromising the interests of our many commercial Maya customers.

Hi Folks,
i have comprehension for the sanction in Maya_ple. I use it for "learning" and to get information about how it works (in os10.1).
And thatīs it.
IOW i think a education- and learning sw-package is not made for "working" or production. A program like maya and free of charge - thatīs enough.

(But also i think the watermarks can be smaller in the viewports.)

In addition for idisk user: ple exists in <Software:Mac OS X:Applications:Imaging & 3D> AND <Whatīs new> Directory.
The cooperation aw<>apple regarding Maya_ple<>iDisk is a good example again for porting maya to os10, i think. I hope thatīs continued.

i wish a wonderful day

You are completely right. Of course I understan that there are watermarks and that they want to protect their product. It's just if you want to learn it during several hours the watermarks a re just too,......many and too big.
I like the Softimage idea of adding several learning movies and no watermarks in the viewport. But as the guy from AW said, it's a necessity...ok then.

Maya has some extremely powerful texture "baking" technology. Someone with a good video card can make some really nice renders in thier open GL window, complete with shadows and everything.
