View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - dur23
dur23 01-13-2003, 02:33 PM Who could possibly resist this challenge?!?!
Not me thats for sure:bounce: :buttrock:
Lor'akani-- Dragon breaders of the very north. They raise the "cold-drakes" to be taimed, and rideable. These dragons do not breath fire and do not fly. But the are one of the fastest land animals of middle earth, and there jaws are strong enough to bite through even the toughest of metals. The "Lor'akani" are the most friendly and wise races of middle earth. They never use spells or anger to train, just calm and kindness. They have been around since the first middle earth dwellers. Noone has ever tried to/ or will try to conquer there territory do the large number of "cold-drakes" (1000's) and there loyalty to the wild life of middle earth. They don't only train the "cold-drakes", they will train whichever race of animal of middle earth that you please. They are the most intune with middle earths wild life. They are the Lor'akani of the foothills of the grey mountains.

http://www.20threed.com/images/pimpin/lotr/Lor'akani_armour.jpg
This here is a rough idea of what his armour will look like. He needs to have some basic armour on him cause when those dragons are teething hes gotta have something for them to bite into. Thus the leather armour on his left arm. His right arm will have a glove on it but not the full arm armour, because he needs more mobility for using the whip and spear that he is equipped with. (which are rarely used, but are sometimes required).
Anyhoo off to draw the spear.

azazel: hey thanks man...It took a lil while to try and make em look friendly. The wise part came with hair...:)
remi: hehe. Very very deep. Yet soothing...and soft...;)
Fetus: You better enter you bitch!!!
cerreto, Gandalf: thanks!
Leigh: Of course there going to be tones of lil and big scars from all the babies and teenage dragons. The arm armour is gonna be all cut up aswell cause of the damn teething. Thanks!!!
Started in on the modeling. Just roughing out the edgeloops for now. Will get into the finiky detail (moles, scratches etc etc...) later...:D
Looking good so far dur...keep it up man...dragon whiperer, what a cool concept...geat job:thumbsup:

Wow, great concept and very cool story.
The "Cold-Drakes" in your story sound a whole hell of a lot like the creature I've been working on. (see sig)
Maybe after this is all over, a collaboration project is in store? :D

Unfortunately I am the bearer of bad tidings though - for some reason, we made a rule that nobody can use hair plugins

Hey dur...awsome start on the body!!...and i know the texture work will be equally as good!!...I agree with you about the hair/fur...is middle earth full of hairless lizard beasts?.....i think not....hair plugins should definatly be allowed, especially in a texture and modeling challenge!!
Keep with the good work!!

hey challenge freaks!
foenix, somlor: Thanks!
freakus23: Thats what i said in my head. No hair is no fun! It's not like its really easy to make it look good. It takes a lot of tweakin to get right. DAMNIT. When you gonna update bitch!
Balur: Your correct. Damnit. I want hair!
Virtuoso: Thanks man. The face is the focus of my character i would say. Its really unfortunate that i can't use hair plugins to the long bits of hair. But ill make it work with planes anyway i guess. We'll see what happens.

And we have changed the hair/fur rule - you can use it, but only for short hair. This is to avoid peole from covering up dodgy modelling with loads of hair.

This is looking so awesome Dur! I love the arm muscles the most, you did a great job modeling those. The leg muscles on the other hand look a little bit unfinished in comparison. The thighs dont seem to have much deifinition (which i guess isnt necessary if they'll be covered like that, but the calves could use a bit more. Right now it looks like its just one bigg bubble muscle on the back of his calf, but it should be split into two. Also the calves are about the same size as his thighs. Granted he's not human, so he can have whatever proportions you want, it just looks a little odd to me. Usually if the calves were that big, the thighs would be monstrously big.
You might waiting until you put your morph targets in, but his face doesn't look very gentle. He has almost a startled look on his face right now, it just doesnt match the gentle qualities of the concept painting.
Anyway keep up the good work
All these great entries make me want to enter this challenge. :)

01-26-2003, 06:16 PM
Rye: thanks man for the great tips....i put a fair bit more definition in the calf region. Split the two muscles up and made them a bit smaller than the quads. I think ill more definition to the quads whilst im at it.
With face you should see him now that he has textures. He looks like hes shitting himself ;)...i believe its cause in the drawing his were a lil more closed and his mouth was closed. But the #1 reason is the hair. The hair makes him look soft and friendly. :)
We'll see. It's great to see you in this challenge. :) Thanks again!
Fetus: hehe classy:) The clothes are not yet done. But soon :)

theres some subtle yet helpful sss thanks to andymans--transvol2 (http://www.andymator.co.uk/shaders/tranvol2/index.html). Which just got released yesterday...Its a beuty...anyone using XSI3 go give it a try....Its simple and fun:) Couple bugs with FG....but still damn fun..
On to the update....so his head is pretty much all textured up with all the maps in place....theres even one for the sss so that the ears and nose are more transy...the nose still needs tweaking, but that'll come in time.....and the ears even have viens where less light passes through....WEEEE! :)

I like this guy. He already has character. :wip: Although he looks clumsy with those big, flat feet. And I assume texturing is still in progress. (It could stand to be more subtle!) Also his facial hair looks stuck on... I can't say why, exactly. Maybe some stubble might help. But all in all its coming along very nicely.

Pabbloz:The feather comes from the great dragon spirit or something, All the baby dragons can smell it and thats how they know they have to listen to the bearer of the stick. I see! It's a bit bigger than I thought in a first "attempt", but I think is a cool idea such height! Cool!
I think you can find the right proportions placing the stick near of the hand and imaginating if he closes the hand he should catch it without problems! do you understand? :)

02-16-2003, 10:42 AM

i agree with pablozz, like the new height, but think that it's too thick...
Great work!

02-17-2003, 02:28 PM
Pabbloz: yah i get what yar saying. :) I rotated the stick and partially rigged his arm, and closed his hand around the leather grip. It seems to be ok as far grip goes. I might have to scale down that section of the staff slightly, to make more believable.
Polart: hmmm...ill try to thing out the stick to see how it works in overall, but im definetly keeping the height:D
Im trying to figure out what i could add to his flesh to make him a lil more interesting...anyone else got some ideas?

Hi Dur23.............I think overall it's a very well done creation. Lots of details and work I know has gone into him.
I quess along with pabbloz I love the staff/stick the most of anyone. It's very well done, great job.
I think the skin could go more towards a human tone,a bit more of a pinkish/brown hue perhaps, but that's just a taste thing, what you do have is quite good.
As for the hair I would go even softer,a little at least. But also add some thickness to it,slightly,A little more clumpiness to it.
Well those are just taste things. What you do have is a very nice creation, one of the better ones in a very impressive field within this challenge.Keep going with as much as possible to the end,it's all worth it.Very good job.
pabbloz
02-23-2003, 01:59 AM
Yes! this character is progressing in the right way! :applause:
Just there is one thing wich bother me... those blue eyes... I think they could be for a Disney creature... but for tolkien... a dark brown ones would be enough, no?
And maybe a soft glossisnes on the skin and nails would be good too.
Aaaaand... ;) ... could you "insert" some darker hairs between the white ones? for a more real old hair, you know
Come on! We hope see this posed soon! :wip:

The dof makes them look like toys:) hehe that will change...along with more vegetation in the area.
Thanks for the comments guys!
Dirk_P_Ho: Thanks G! Had to settle with no SSS tho. Just using a lil bit of translucency mixed with relflections....;)
Virtuoso:Aye the skin for me right now is being finiky. I have a translucency thing going on and its totally changing his skin color. That and the hair is aswell:(. I still gots a lil bit to fix. MAybe a more visible gloss i might be able to get away with
pabbloz: yea i wasn't sure which eyes would go best for him as i wanted a gentler looking creature. I think ill give brown a go. The hairs are tougher to manipulate than i ever thought they would be. :(. But added some more color variations. Unfortunatly ya can't really see that in this render as they are only about 60 pixels in total ;) The skin gloss is coming sooni just had it turned really low;)
overiguana:  :airguitar
Excellent image! I agree that vegetation will set the scale. Keep it up!
dur that is SOOOo cool! Yeah they do look a bit like toys :) but thats the danger of depth of field. I would think you wouldnt have depth of field in an images like this, am i wrong? Seems like it only happens when things are REALLY close. Thats a great idea though, is that supposed to be Smaug? I think you should make yer guy doing some sort of spell, maybe he could be charming the dragon? Good job though : )

Just wanted to come in and say it's always better this creation of your's.I really think it's one of the best in a very good field, that's saying quite a bit.
The mod's have shown some fine work this challenge, but as for qualified challengers for the top spots with this challenge I think you have a good chance at one of the top spots............it is that good from overall design, creativity, actual modeling, textures etc,etc...
I hope to see another shot and or pose.I like Rye's idea of a spell type pose being done. But we shall see what you have in mind soon enough I hope.Keep going,it's close to the finish line and you have done real well thus far.

wires for the scene
http://www.20threed.com/images/pimpin/lotr/wires.gif
yeahhh that looks so much better! Great job dur :D Try using Image Ready to compress rather than Photoshop. You'll get much better results.
Excellent work, can't really comment much. I'd expect to see more of a mountainous scenery than wide open plains. From reading the hobbit, lotr, the similarian the feeling that dragons like the mountains along with their gold.
No need to cange the scene mesh wise, possibly a more mountainous backdrop might give it a better feel overall.
