Hey guys. I made this thread so the Siggraph chapter at VCU can post their WIP's and other members will easily be able to find and see them. Hopefully this will help you all learn more and inspire you to actually finish something. I personally dont think I have any "Finished" products but hopefully this will keep me going. So if your not a member of Siggraph at VCU we would love your C&C's.

Ok to get things started I'll post a character that hopefully one day I will finish so let me know what you think of the concept.

Its going to be a redneck that has won the lottery and moved to Jamaica. Now he is trying to fit in with his surroundings. I figure I can come up with a funny short for this guy if I ever finish him.

Well here he is let me know what you think.

VCU as in Virginia commonwealth university!?? I did my freshman year there but transfered to SCAD (savannah college of art and design) becuase I liked their computer art program better. how is the computer art department up there in gold old Richmond? any of you live in Rhoads while you were there? also do you have more than just one room of computers now? later

BEN MATHIS! HOly cow, holy cow!
Man, I remember you. You always wore shorts and sandals, even in winter. This is Joe Mirabello, I was in a bunch of yer AFO classes, do you remember me? If you are who I think you are, you were in katie shaw's and david shea's classes with me.

Wow man, I remember you leaving for scad too, and you certainly have improved a thousand-fold since being there (I scoped your site) nice work man!

As for VCU's 3d capabilities, they leave much to be desired. There's a small congregation of students though who are inspired and diligent, and hopefully we'll all put up some good stuff. As far as labs, we've got a lab with about 15 seats of XSI, and a lab with 10 or so seats of MAX, and then the video labs, which are run down pretty bad. The sculpture dept. has a lab with 30 seats of MAX. Also, its a state school, so funding is getting slashed left and right too. There are only 3 or 4 really capable 3d/CG teachers in the art school.

But like I said, there's a bunch of us who work hard and want it bad enough, there's a lot of talent and great ideas floating around. So hopefully we'll produce some good stuff.

Send me an email or PM, Ben!

Oh, and I see you're trying for the James Hawkins job, Jay is one of the coolest guys in the universe. He let me harrass him with questions about a month ago or so.

Man, i'm from Richmond, and i go to SCAD, my mother was faculty at VCU, but is now here at SCAD as well. CG program here at SCAD is good, but not perfect. I'm working on my senior project at the moment, and i'll be posting things for it soon. Just saw both Richmond and Savannah so i thought i'd say hi.

A portrait of my roomate as a crazy hulking rambo worm thing. I'm gonna color this thing digitally, but don't plan on modeling him or anything. Just having fun and helping keep this thread alive.

No progress on the redneck yet. :( But I will begin working on him soon.

I will also give him a nice family, maybe give them each their own interests. Perhaps Ill give him a banjo playing son, classic. A daughter that is very studious. And a wife that is a total nutcase. I want them all to be completely different so when they interact with each other their is plenty of conflict.

Lemme know what you think. Ill try to work on the models and come up with some sketches for the family.

BTW- Thank you for pushing me along. If I dont post for awhile just yell at me and I will get back to work. :)

TADA. Joe demanded I post on here to let everyone know I'm here. I'll get some of my modeling up at some point, but in the extremely near future it'll have to be sketches or concept drawings, until I can get back into the 3-D.

I posted this in the wrong spot. Accidentally made a new thread. Replies welcomed on either thread. Stupid, tricksie me. Anyway, here's an introductory sketch from me for you guys.

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=38849

I did this a few months ago. Just an idea that popped into my head. It has since developed into an idea for a film/animation.

Its an ink sketch on bristol board. Took me a while to make the file size small enough. 30k is hard to shrink down to.

Anyhow, not my best work, but just something I thought I'd throw up here.

http://ramsites.net/~mirabellojr/images/portfolio/ps_liero.jpg

Everyone, keep in mind the posting rules, I think the mods do keep an eye on that sort of thing. There's a thread about it in this section of the boards. It's something like only one image per user per thread, unless you host it yourself and link it, which is a swell idea. Since we're all VCU students (unless your a guest browsing this thread (if so, hi!)) VCU gives us each 10-20 megs free webspace. Horay!

so, here i am and yes i like to pick my nose. but only in front of joe. and only in coffee shops. mmm boogers and coffee :shame:

we've got a little dilema here, kids. kristen and i have class til 8:50 monday nights. doug has class til 8:20 on tuesday, me and kristen til 8:50 wednesday, doug til 8:20 thursday, and the weekend probably isn't the best time for meetings. so now what? the bylaws say all the officers must attend meetings. we could do the really late meetings, but again, will anyone come? we're in a bad spot.

so this is where the poll comes in. should we modify it to be more specific and add some late-night options?

:airguitar rock :buttrock: definitly rock.

Is 9 oclock too much on wednesdays? Tuesdays and Thursdays I have class from 8 AM to 9:20 PM, and I'd really be dissapointed to be missing out on Siggraph. I don't really have any problems with late meetings on weekdays.

ekatron
01-27-2003, 08:42 PM
we hadn't really considered 9pm on wednesdays... or mondays for that matter. should we put that in the poll? we could have options like:

monday 9pm
tuesday 8:30pm
wednesday 9pm
thursday 8:30pm
weekend ~

how does this sound?

MajinPunisher
01-28-2003, 12:50 AM

Hey, thanks,

I'm currently using MAX 4.2, I have MAX 5, but I can't get it to install on my System..

AMD XP2100
NVidia GeForce 4
WindowsXP PRO

That's unfortunate because I've read that they have done a real nice job with the new features. And they have corrected many lighting issues.

To be honest with you, I started using 3D studio max last January. I liked it so much that I entered into a competition with a pal of mine through Highschool organization and from there Competed in:

Districts(Richmond, March): Placed 1st
went on to
States (Virginia Beach, April): Placed 1st
then on to
Nationals (Kansas City, June): Placed 14th.

I wasn't too disappointed about the 14th, I mean, after all, I just learned of the program 5 months earlier.

I haven't had any classes on the program, unless you count all of those tutorials I've done... I'm pretty much self taught. I also use Photoshop 6 and I enjoy using FLASH... :) check out www.digitalcrystaldesigns.com if you would like, I made that site in about 3 weeks (my first flash site, on a trial version of Flash MX).

Anyway, that's a little baclkground on me. I haven't had much experience with Character animation so much, but, like I had mentioned earlier, I feel like I know my stuff about nonorganic stuff :).

Talk with yall later.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Thanks.

I'm signed up for Business Admin, but I'm looking for possibly a minor in CG, if at all possible. I was told that VCU has a really good CG department, and I really would rather be doing CG as a major, but from what I've read and look around at... there isn't that much happening in this neck of the woods (Richmond) as far as Computer Graphics goes *maybe I'm just young and naive*. So I figure, I'll get into business for myself (hense the Business degree) and create my own business for advertisement and such. Allowing me to continue in my CG career but with my rules... *sorta*.

I mean, I just look at it this way, IF I grab a CG degree as a major, and graduate, where will that lead me? -->Starving artist? And I would need to move west to be truely and honestly successful? I mean, I really haven't had a chance to ask anyone studying the field what was to come after college for them, but that's just want I've seen (however extensive that view is....). So, unless you folks can convince me otherwise *feel free to do so* I think I'm stickin' to business.

The business isn't running so bad so far. Digital Crystal Designs' total net income so far after 6 months is around $1200 (freelance work mainly) and with little/no debts such as office space and such, we get it all *until taxes*. We've had 6 clients, one or two of which we have done videos for free just because we wanted to help the folks out, and have a larger engineering firm looking into us. They design bridges and hire firms to put together 3d video/picture renderings for presentations. They've seen our website, like what they see/have heard about us, and are interested in seeing what we can do. So that's looking like some $$$ :)

Right now I'm currently working on a video for a national competition and so far we're doing alright. And when I say we, I mean my pal Karl and I. Anyway, we're creating this futuristic city scene with flying traffic and the whole deal. The video has to be 30 seconds long and describe some themes such as teamwork, community building, and mentorship, types of positive aspects, all based around this organization that's putting on the competition. *Like an advertisement for them, in your own special way.* So that's what I've been doing for the last few days. Karl's been having some trouble rigging his mesh for our main character though, and that's troubling. We've both never worked on animating characters, and it seems that interaction between animated characters is the way to go. So that poses as a possible problem. I guess the main thing we have against us is time. The video has to be in California by 5pm on the 21st. And we expect to have a bus (that wip I showed earlier) full of animated characters flying through the futuristic city, with two characters talking about how teamwork/mentorship/community pride blah blah helps them and the society stuff.... in 30 seconds.... Last year if you placed between 1st and 4th, every member of the team recieved the lastest version of 3d Studio Max... which would mean 3d studio max 5.* (this year). They are Edu copies, but still a legit MAX 5 copy none the less. IF you would like to help and would like to join the team (3 people at the moment) that would be awesome, Karl and I drive through downtown Richmond everyday and have an hour and a half lunch break between our VCU classes and Highschool classes. So maybe we could stop and have lunch or something if you are interested in helping.

WOW, that's a long post... have a nice evening folks and I'll be checkin' to see if anyone of you speaks of any interest on that project. I'll post some pictures of our progress tomorrow or something like that on our website for all to see.

See ya,

Jeremy !!

P.S. Scott joined the circus when he was 6. He realized he couldnt cut it so he left the one legged midget a note saying he was moving to Vegas to be a showgirl. He proceeded to have a sex change and again realized he couldnt cut it. So he left his fellow drag queens to search for his true dream of being the treasurer of the VCU Siggraph Chapter. And he lived happily ever after.

Here's what I've emailed for those of you out there who may be interested. From here on out we can continue discussion through email and chat online:

Hey guys,

Thanks for offering to help. Here’s the scoop on the our situation:

We need human characters. That’s the long and short of it. In our story board, we need 3 main distinct characters. A woman in her 30s/40s (future), a 17 year old girl (future), and a 17 year old girl (present times :: same as the 30/40 year old when she was younger). Basically right now we have ¾ of the woman 30 year old rigged and nearly ready for animation now. Karl has been messin’ with gal since the start so it’s moving slower than we….I expected.

I’ve setup a webpage for you to go to check out some of the pictures and a little bit more about the story board.

I hate to be the pessimist, Jeremy 2, but you've got a long way to go by the 21st!. Even for 30 seconds, it'll be really tricky and I wish you the best of luck. Although I can't committ myself, I would be more than happy to offer you any advice or support. One of these days when you are on campus we'll have to meet for lunch.

my email is: blankslatejoe@hotmail.com

bytheway, you can't email direct through cgtalk, but you can 'personal message' someone, which will then notify their email if the persons preferences are set up right. So... it's pretty close.

so

we've procrastinated too long. while i think it's a little late to hold a formal siggraph meeting, we'd like to invite everyone to get together tomorrow (wednesday) night at 9pm in the video lab (215 pollak). you can bring work you've recently completed, work in progress- anything you'd like to share. and that doesnt even limit it to 3D work. if you have drawings, designs, sculptures... this includes whatever you want it to. we'd just like to get together and see what everyone else has been up to... a show and tell.

we have G4's, a DVD player, VCR, and stereo available. to those of you who might want to bring renders, please bring it in a file format that we can view on the G4 on CD or ZIP disk. the ORBs are still acting funny here and who knows about the jaz and superdrives.

we can also access the web here, although we'd have to crowd around a computer in the back of the room.

hope to see a lot of you there. and please vote for a permanent meeting time if you havent already.

over and out

Heres a little walk cycle I made. Works best in windows media player. Im wondering if anyone can tell me how to compress it. I compressed it from 85MB to 11MB. I dont know why 2 seconds is 85MB :surprised:

The walk cycle might be a little fast because after I rendered it seemed slow so I sped it up alot. But now I realize that might be because of how big the file is, my player my be slow.

Well heres a my plain ol forward kinematic walk cycle. :D

Well hmm I dont have web space and I just realized I cant post an avi as an attachment so nm. But I could still use an answer to that question about compression. :)

we saw both of scott's cat pieces, heather's disease piece, kristen's SPAM, my hungry jack, joe's old animations and current modeling projects, jeremy 2 and carl's projects and current animation, doug's drugged out video......um....... i think i'm forgetting someone..... forgive me if i am.

jeremy2 and carl, you're welcome to come to any of our other meetings and events. we don't have funding yet since we're a new organization to vcu, but hopefully we will soon. to catch you up to speed, we've been having regular meetings every other week and tried a video game night. next time we'll make sure to bring the systems :) . we're planning to have guests come and get some tutorials going. but as for now, we're brainstorming free things to do to keep people interested. you can keep up with us and get on our mailing list by joining

Hey folks,

Just wanted to update you on our status.. or mine at least. karl is actually flying now when it comes to riggin' characters, he just did 2 within the last 2 hours.. They aren't really detailed folks, but they will do just fine to fill in the void of lack of people. Anyway, here is my city with textures and fog the way fog is supposed to be.

I through the bus in there also to see how it looked.. and so far everything is going well. The picture of elvis is actually a video of him at a concert for one of our Video billboards. I thought about putting a news broadcast or something like that, but I couldn't find any and the ones that I did find were about September 11th, and then the others were going to cost money :(. So I figured, hey, why not music? And then I thought about the age of the judges, they may not be into the new age concerts with lights and all, so I figure Elvis will reach out to them in some way :) I have also placed the "digital crystal designs" animation on a screen or two in the scene... why not right?

Anyway, here the picture is. The scene is still lacking about 9 buildings that a junior from the high school is producing. He's just now learning 3dsm and we're trying to get him "learned". The scene also lacks color.. So I'm planning on adding plenty of text signs on the buildings and a bunch of "lights"<--- objects with glow.

http://www.digitalcrystaldesigns.com/3ds/video/city6small.jpg

Cheers,
-Jeremy !!

TheFallenWeeble
02-07-2003, 05:45 PM
Cool still. Are you going to add more texture to the vehicles and buildings? Right now they seem a little too perfect. A few scratches... some wear n' tear (at least burn marks from the propulsion systems on the vehicles). Make it real. I know that's asking a lot, especially with a deadline (you've given yourself? or is this for someone else?). As far as the signage n' lights go, I don't think Elvis is that bad of a choice, but I'd think you'd have to add something to it to make it fit that time (I dunno, maybe make it a concert ad for ElvisClone: Live in Concert or something). I look forward to seeing the rest of this.

In other news, I'm unhappy with the fact that I missed the last meeting (and probably any upcoming Wednesday meeting), but I'll get over it. A lunchbox tutorial might not be a bad idea, but maybe a better idea would be to show how you can do the exact same thing at home with Premiere and a DV camera. Just a suggestion.

DigitalCrystal
02-07-2003, 06:08 PM
Hey Fallen,

Yeah, I'm still planning on adding other small details in. Right now, I'm just still working on the raw development. The cars and such will have more "grungy" textures on them, but for the moment, I'm stickin' with the solid chrome :)

I've added some signs to the scene and changed the glass material on the roofs of some of the buildings.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

jeremy2-
i think groo's right... it doesnt make sense to just have old elvis on futuristic tv but it would add context to make it an elvis clone. that problem would be easily solved by just smacking some text on the footage titling it..... you know how they normally put it at the bottom of the tv so you know what you're watching? also, a really easy way to get some news footage on your billboards would be to just tape it off the tv yourself. all you need to do is hook up a camera to your vcr or tv and hit record. then you can digitize that footage and project it onto your billboard. heather knows a lot about that... she could give you advice if you want to continue with that idea. i do think you need more than just one kinetic sign... it will stand out too much and look out of place. think tokyo and new york where they bombard you with all this advertising. this is an area where you can get creative and make spoofs too to add the little details which give the environment more character.

groo and joe-
i think the lunchbox and using premier both have advantages and disadvantages. the lunchbox can screw up the quality sometimes, but you have flexibility to see what you've done quickly and toggle between frames. on the other hand, premier you can use at home and dont have to wait for lab time. maybe we could show bothe techniques.

what about having some basic lighting and sound workshops? we could get bob k to come in and show us maybe, or, we could do it ourselves. i think both lighting and sound contribute a lot to the quality of whatever you're working on.

erika

ps- maybe we should do thursday meetings since thats when patrick can do it. input?

DigitalCrystal
02-07-2003, 08:29 PM
I'm with you all the way :)

I have several screens. In fact, I have 8... but in that scene I only had 3 :) The others are going to be using a similar style like you were talking about... ie New York or Tokyo. I was thinking of adding a spoof like:

"The Land Before Time 27
-Return to the Green Valley, again, again, again."

Or something like that, along those lines :)

Since the video is only 30 seconds and the characters are going to be on the bus, it'll be hard to see all of it, so anything will have to be quick, clear, and attention grabbing. :)

Thanks for your input Erika.

Slight nitpick... I think you can still toggle in Premiere as well. At any rate, all of those workshop ideas are great. Also, Bob (Kaputof) knows a lot about the lunchbox and doing stop motion in Premiere as well. At any rate, let's see what we can get.

TheFallenWeeble

Sweet. Is that white silhouette gonna change or are you keeping it as is? If it's remaining a silhouette, you might want to gray it a bit... the white is quite stark.

Also, it may just be artifacts from compression, but there are a number of artifacts and pixelation on the soccer ball.

Indavisual
03-08-2003, 07:53 PM
yeah its a work in progress. Those silhouettes arent going to remain white either. I was thinking of makin em black. Theres gonna be grass and a blue sky for the back ground and stuff and Im not quite sure how Im gonna handle the brightness of things yet. As for the ball I think its the compression. Thanks for your crit.

TheFallenWeeble
03-18-2003, 04:49 AM
I can dig it. Only a couple things that bother me:

1) I like the idea of the fireball soccerball (I think that's what you mean), but I kinda wish that the big soccer ball were more white. With so much orange, the poster looks a bit washed out.

2) That goal is really nice lookin, but I think it's a bit large to realistically scale with the figure in front of it.

Other than that, I love it.

Groo- 50 megahertz.... wow, I have an old 66megahertz Dos /win3.1 machine, but you take the cake.

I started on a Kapro 2 though, back in 85ish. It had no hard drive. The operating system was stored on a 5 1/2 disk, while programs were run off of a second 5 1/2 drive. I felt like the guy from wargames, only... 5 years old. You gotta love the 80s.

groo, i dig the overall look to your site. It doesn't look too glichy in explorer with the exception of a few frame-seperated-slices not lining up.

The only comment I really have is that your gallery navigation, and the other navigation inside that center frame, really hides from the eye. You might want to do something to pop it out. (vertical might help, contrast, or a spot color (a dullish, low saturated color wouldn't destroy your look and would still lead the eye to those text items).

Anyway I dig it a lot, I really like your traditional stuff, particularly that gorrilla!

Have you seen it in a browser that properly supports png (mozilla, firebird, safari, and I think opera, to name a few)? Check it out if you haven't. It looks 10 times better. The table-aligning problems come from the fact that IE includes border sizing when accounting for a table's width (or something along those lines), putting the math off by 2-3 pixels each time. It's annoying. I can account for it with some browser detection code, but I shouldn't have to (that said, if this site was anything more than a personal site, I'd probably add that code... but it isn't, so I probably won't).

Yeah... I figure I'll do something about that eventually. I've considered changing the color of those links, but I've gotta find something that stands out without blinding/annoying anyone.

blankslatejoe
04-04-2004, 10:20 PM
hey man, good to see some new names in this thread! VCU siggraph club is basically just a club of people interested in animation, special effects, 3d modeling and animation, videogame design, game or graphics programming, and other stuff. We've got kinetic students, illustration students, computer science students, i think we have an engineering student, or used to.

We meet up, watch animations and cg heavy movies, eat pizza, sometimes get guests lecturers to come to vcu and talk; things like that. You don't need to be in a specific major to join, you could come to a meeting as an AFO student still!

It's called "Siggraph" club because the main club goal is the gather enough interest/fund to send a few students to the Siggraph convention held every summer. It's kinda like the mecca for this stuff; everyone goes and it's a cool place to see new things, meet contacts; really dive into the cg underworld.

Ok; i think that's the skinny.

anyway, hang in there scott. post some artwork and drop me the link when you can the chance!

Man oh man... I almost forgot that I had an account here. This is Groo from... well... I graduated in '04... but at that point I'd been at VCU for 7 years.

Still in Richmond. Self-employed in a studio I started with 3 other guys.

Woohoo!

Oh snap. Whats up fellas. Its Jeremy from VCU, dec of 04. How you guys been? Im jealous of Joe. ;) Cuz I am looking for a job in games right now but Im so darn busy with stuff I cant seem to find time to put together a game reel. Im still doing commercial production at NBC12 and jsut finished a commercial that I hear could win an Emmy, which is cool. And I am on a mod team for a total conversion for Half Life 2 called Pandaemonium. Bojana is actually on the team too, if you remember her. Good to hear from ol classmates. :)

No idea what a 3 year old thread is doing here, but it's certainly nostalgic seeing the portfolio from years ago of my buddy Ben up here. :)

We're doing alright. I can pay my bills; anything more than that is icing.

Predominantly we're in print design and animation. Most of our recent stuff has been in print, though. We're hoping to give a good push for animation and illustration at the beginning of the year.
