My guess: it is one of those planes that could fly just above the atmosphere (there have been plans for such next generation passenger planes for years). The theory is that such a plane would experience little air friction, fly faster and consume less fuel. It seems, from the clip, the plane is assisted by the shuttle craft's thrust power to take it above the stratosphere whereupon the plane detaches from the spacecraft.

As much as I'm eager to see it, some parts of the acting left me wondering. Dialogues seemed a trifle melodramatic imo. Even from kevin spacey?!
