Here I am! I eventually begin my anatomy thread !!! Yeaaah!:bounce: I have some oldies, some "nude" sketches, but they were done 2-3 years ago, so I don't think I'll show them at first time. But now, I begin to practice more anatomy, taking reference from photos and from master copies. I need to improve my skills, and I think it works, soooo... I think that's the good moment to begin my own thread, because thanks to your (future) comments, it will help me a lot.

Here are my two 15 minutes sketches, to begin with:

and a new one, thx to photo ref

Not a bad start! For the line drawing you may want to draw lighter and draw the forms more. I would draw them as cylinders than shade them that way. This should help with foreshortening. Also I would check the heaviness of your line. If you ever draw teeth this way, your going to run into a problem. The teeth will look like they are diseased. Notice on the the photo, not everything has an outline on it. Some areas can be suggested with shadow. The outline tends to flatten the depth of the image. Its great for animation though.

You may want to do some shadow studies and volumetric studies. One type of study that I find pretty usefull is when you form the shapes via selective scribbling. The denser areas areas of scribble are where the shadow is deeper. Its almost like a sculpture style of drawing since your describing form and mass more.

My favorite sketch of yours is the third one. I also really like the gestural quality of the first.

agou,

It's great to see you start your Anatomy Thread! I particularly like the linework you have in your second piece, and hope to see many more studies! I really recommend Life Studies as well as Master Studies. Do you have access to life drawing classes in your area?

I encourage people to do Master Copies ~ see this useful thread with links to Master Copy Resources:

I'm glad to see so much people in my thread! Come in, come in, that's great to have some comments!
Womball> great advices, really. I'll follow them. The exercise about shadows and volumes seems to be a good advice too; in fact I used to do some, when I studied in college, but as I said, I didn't practice traditional art (and anatomy) for a couple of years. So now I need to train a little bit.

Rebeccak> hey, thanks for your kind words! in fact, there are some life studies classes in my city, I used to attend some of them, but they stop during summer (until october i think). So I guess I'll train thanks to master copy and life observation, and thanks to cgtalk too! :D

Gunilla> it's nice of you to come in my little thread, welcome!

Zapan> aaaaaaaah, je l'attendais celui-là! Here you are! Hehe, I planned for a long time to create my ooown anatomy thread, I dreamed about it for many many times, and also I hoped that you would spam in it. I'm sooo happy now!:applause: Come to spam whenever you want Stef, anatomy spamming is welcome here.
And about 3D? Yep, why not? I have more time now, and still a lot of things to improve in 3D, that's an idea.

Cheers people!

Hi people, I'm back.
In fact, I didn't really know what I may add to this thread, for the moment I don't really have time to make life drawings. I 'll be on vacation next week, and then, I'll be moving, so I don't think I'll have time to make a break and do some sketches.
However, I began a master copy (from a Waterhouse painting), and I'm planning to do seriously some exercises to improve anatomy in my sketches. Meanwhile, I made some character designs, for fun, and I can't help showing them. I took care to proportions and to posing, I spent more time than usual on them (usually, that's no more than 15-20 minutes) and... well... I think it's worth it.

Ah, very much looking forward to the Master Copy. :) With the first character sketch, her arms seem a bit small ~ it's hard to crit at such an early stage, it would be great to see these further developed. :)

Here is my participation to the "Head challenge", I did my first sketches in Photoshop, all in greyscale to study volume and lights.

I began with my friend Richelieu, then the pretty lady, done this morning...

Did I hear vacations ? ... does it mean you have to print every 100 heads to be able to draw at the beach ? :D

Looking forward for the next set ! Go Sophie !

Yeah, Steph is here! Hehe, I don't think I will draw on the beach (too much sand and too much water), but when I said I would be on vacation, that meant really little vacations, because I will have to help my sister to move, and I will have to move myself.
But really I can't help doing this challenge, vacations or not; it's too great.

agou,

One thing I would recommend is to take these a little further, and to give more of a range of value to the grayscale pieces, and more saturation to the color pieces. :) Don't go sheerly for quantity, but try to push each piece until it 'works', at whatever level of finish that is. A piece can work quite nicely even or sometimes especially at a rough stage, such as your previous grayscale pieces. Try to push yourself to create pieces that are simple, yet read as form. This is the tough part of the exercise, more so than the number. :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

well, it's time for a big update! I posted my works in the "challenge" thread, but I didn't take time to put them here. THey're not in order, but you have the number to indicate what are the most recent stuffs. I had some useful comments on some of them, but it doesn't matter if there's more!
All of them with Photoshop, except the two las ones with Artrage, from one hour-3h.

agou,

I think these are particularly strong, and I actually think your color work is stronger than your grayscale ~ it's great to see your participation here, I would love to see you push your color pieces just a bit further ~ add that extra spark which will really ignite / set off your individual pieces. In 08 I really like the combination of drawn black line with the color, I think that looks quite successful ~ keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more! :)

Rebeccak,
I tried to follow some advices concerning my color sketches - thank you. It is very useful, and more, it's nice to have some encouragements. I know my color studies are not really pushed, but I think my first ones are a bit awkward, that's why they're more unachieved than the b&w sketches.
Thx a lot Rebeccak!

agou, I am really sorry to hear about the job situation ~ we all wish you the best! :) Regarding stopping drawing, I completely understand, I think as artists we all go through such periods of activity / inactivity ~ the forum certainly helps me to be active as well, without it, I know I would do much less art! :D

Really liking 12 and 15 in particular, and I would love to see you do more finished work following the Workshop! :)

Phheeeww...I expected to do more these days... okay from the begining I didn't think I would do so much, but at one moment, I hoped to do at least 30... That's not a big problem, I think I'll do some more from time to time because that's a great exercise! Thanks Beckie for your support, and the other ones - if they came to this thread one day, I want to thank them.

Hi!
It's been a long time since my last update - I haven't been on cgtalk forums for a while. More, I didn't really draw these last months, for many reasons : creating and updating my new website for instance! (that's a good reason don't you think?) ...and so on...
I've just realized that I didn't show my little participation at torsos challenge. I'd like to do some more for practising, because I really improved after my 25 head serie.

Hi Sophie!
Really refreshing thread you've got here... Your progress is stunning, and there are many interesting things going on in your studies. I have to agree with the above mention that somehow the colour ones feel more natural artwork wise, more fluent. Just don't rush it, try to feel comfortable with weights, masses, lights, etc before going into face details,clothings... I'd say ;)
keep it up!

Finally I come back from vacations! I had a great time! For the first time I decided to go to Conceptart.org/Massive Black Workshop, located in Dallas. It was a really great experience, I met very talented people there, whatever they were instructors or attendees. I won't forget it because I had great advices and tips from people working in the industry for years, I drawn a lot, attended nice conferences about how to work in this field, hom to compose an illustration and put colors... I would advice everyone who likes drawing to go there. There's a lot of opportunities, even if you just have some professional contacts, it helps a lot.

In a few words, awesome!

Of course I did a few sketches there...

And finally, I've been for a week in NY.... Yeaaaah! Very inspiring city, I made a few sketches at the MET and at the Bronx Zoo!

Wow!
Pretty nice sketches indeed! Some are really beautiful!
And I'm so jealous of everyone going to CA Workshops!
I vote the next one to be held in Belgium! LOL

Hi Agou, great sketches! Good to hear you are attending lessons; it's always a big help next to attending forums and reading books. Keep going!
