"Disney's decision to postpone the release of Cars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317219/) from November -- when previous Pixar movies have been released -- to June -- when schools are out -- could result in offsetting what analysts have called a disappointing weekend opening. On Monday, the film earned $6,445,000 -- far above the $3,802,000 that The Incredibles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317705/), the last Pixar release, earned on its first Monday in November, 2004. Likewise on Tuesday, Cars took in $5,820,000 versus $3,213,000 for the first Tuesday of The Incredibles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317705/). "

I think a lot of the reason for a 'low' opening weekend was the anticipation for this film was not as high as ones in the past. Mostly because all of the nay-sayers around the industry chat boards bad mouthing the teaser trailers that have been released over the past year saying the film does not look interesting. Now that it has been out and has mostly received positive feedback from people who have seen it, it's creating buzz around the boards and people are becoming interested to see it, now. I don't think there will be much of a dropoff in the second weekend, and it's possible that the numbers may even go up. While most movies that are considered 'good' movies will see a drop in box office tickets from week one to week two, I think Cars may be the opposite. I've seen the film twice, so far, and plan on seeing it at least two more times with friends and my nephew when he visits later this summer. In my opinion, this is one of Pixar's best films ever and is one I could happily watch over and over.

Agreed.

Word of mouth, and little kids, will be the salvation of this film.

I predict a good week and 2nd weekend for cars considering it is summer and fathers day. Either Dads that want to see the film, will go see it with the family (me) or Dads will stay home and relax/nap while mom takes the kids out to the movies to give dad some quiet time.

I predict that your prediction will come true.

I expect less that 1% of people who went to see the film have ever been to an industry chat board. So I'd have to disagree with your analysis.

What, Neil? The Universe doesn't revolve around industry chat boards?!?

Blasphemy!
