View Full Version : Gods/Demons - Character - Sirchced
Sirchced 03-12-2002, 06:39 AM This is my character idea... maybe. I haven't decided if I want to model this one or not. This is a kind of stylized version of the Greek God of war Aries.
I am also thinking of modeling a version that me and my brother have been talking about... a kind of modern day Aries. I'll post the image tomorrow.
Let me know what you all think.

Sweet design. I'm looking forward to seeing the 3D version.

Like I said, I'm not sure if I'm going to use this design. But, thanks for your enthusiasm.
Check back for updates. And be sure to let me know which design you like after I post my brother's idea.
Thanks.
great piece. I dunno why but it fits this character great.

This is another idea for the character that my brother helped me with. (I hope that's not against the rules)
It's supposed to be a modern day Aries. War today has done a lot to him. He is no longer young and full of life. He is slightly insane and very abused.
Sirchced
03-13-2002, 02:31 AM
This is his full body. He will also be holding a huge machine gun of some kind and a Rambo type knife.

I originally started with a finger, but then decided to move to the eye.
I've been having trouble starting this one out. I wanted to begin like the masters, start out with basic shapes and work in the details through subdivision, but I can't quite get the concept fully. So, I'm going to do sections and blend them as I go. That seems to work for me.

I think the second one is far scarier and more befiting the God of War. Your first one was cool too but just didn't feel like Ares to me.
Sirchced
03-13-2002, 07:28 AM
You would think that the god of war would be like the second, but if you read about Aries as he was in the Greek myths he is actually not very powerful or intimadating... he's kind of a pansy. And his father, Zeus, just about calls him that when Aries losses a battle and goes whining to Zeus about it.
But I do like the second one too... and I agree. So, I think I might stop modeling the first one and jump right into the second.
Thanks for your comments.
Sirchced
03-13-2002, 08:42 AM
OK... So, I am starting with the eye again. This time for the second character.

It's getting late and I really want to do more, but I need some sleep. So, this is where I left off tonight.
This is fun.
Comments are welcome.

I did a little more today. More to come.

I really love the sketches as they are coming in .
The same for 3D .
I mean I'm getting positively surprised as it progresses .
I used to work in 3d as you're doing : you keep maximum control over what you're doing but it's time consuming and you can lose the overall structure of your model .
Have you try a mix of the two methods ? You make a global thing, subdividing it, and sometimes you delete polys to replace them by your "hand made" pieces .
Anyway, the model is shaping quit good for now .
Oh, and why not keeping the horns thing on his helmet (as it's one of the major Aries typical "attribut") !?
Keep it going good !!
Sirchced
03-14-2002, 03:08 AM
Thanks for your comments.
I've tried doing the subdivision thing, but for some reason I can never get my brain to work that way. I agree that this will take longer, but it's the only way that I know how to model right now. If you have any tips or detailed advise on how to model by subdivision I would be happy to hear it. I'm still learning.
As far as the horns... I don't know if it will look good on this particular model, but I will give it a try when I get to that point.
Thanks again.

I'm going to take El Tonio's advice and combine larger shapes with the details that I have been working on. I'm not sure how this will come out but this is all a learning process for me anyway. Here is the start of it.

Sirchced, I really like your concept! I do agree with El Tonio that you should somehow incorporate horns into your modern version, seeing as it is an Aries symbol :)
Looking cool so far, keep at it!!

03-14-2002, 05:01 PM
well...Greek helmets didn't had horns...anyway.You could use something else from their design.eg nose protection and closed sides with a more industrial desighn like your character.I really like the modern one.Go Go :wip:

Thanks for the advice El Tonio. It's helped a lot so far. I still have to blend everything, but that has never been too dificult for me. You have made this fun again. Thanks.
Here is my most recent update...
El Tonio
03-15-2002, 03:24 AM
Glad if I could have helped you !!
And by the way, it's shaping very well ! I really like it .
Hope you will try horns anyway :)
Hope to see an update soon .

I will give horns a try. I just haven't gotten there yet.

The head is almost done. It took me a lot longer than I had anticipated to do the ears. I should be done with the head by the end of today.
Please comment, suggest, complain,... whatever. Thanks.

Really cool concept!!
The model is coming along nice too!
Are you gonna model the Young Aries aswell? Would be cool!
Sirchced
03-15-2002, 07:52 PM
Thanks Sangotten. I'm glad you like him so far.
I don't know if I am going to do the other one too. I would like to, but it all depends on how long it takes me to do this one.
If you or anyone else who likes the first character sketch would like to model it... be my guest. I'd love to see it modeled regardless of who does it.

03-15-2002, 08:38 PM
i've never imagine Aries as this...
i have already seen some transposition of ancient gods in a modern world... but your God of War looking like a Vietnam Veteran is interesting...
good concept..
Sirchced
03-15-2002, 10:24 PM
Thanks Adrien. I was actually picturing him as a veteran of war in general since he is supposed to be the epitome of war. And, what better war to fashion him bye than the Vietnam war? Wars today seem much less meaningful than I'm sure they were in his day. I figure that he has been put through a lot in the years of man's existence... Hiroshima & Nagasaki, The American Civil War, Vietnam... etc. That's why he looks very battered and kind of insane and explains why his eyes have been sown shut. So, you guessed it.
Thanks for your comments.

Still looking really good has it goes !

Well... I just want to add some little details later, but his head is pretty much done.
Comments?
Oh... and I will get to trying those horns after I have completed a little more.

:applause: Looking awesome so far m8, times a ticking cant wait to see more... Not sure bout the past comments regarding adding horns... What bout dogtags with aries symbol stamped on them instead (horns may look out of place on a modern soldier) Keep this up man, will be back here to look in often :)

My March Challenge So Far (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3816&perpage=15&pagenumber=1)
Great modelling so far. He looks spooky. Reminds me of the undead Viet Nam soldier from the movie 'HOUSE'.

This is one of his hands. The other one will be pretty much the same but with a cloth wrapped around part of it, as in the illustration.

03-18-2002, 05:56 AM
Good looking hands. From the top view it looks like the radius and ulna may be meeting a little bit too far into the hand, you might want to bring out the wrist a bit. I like the way the model's looking so far, keep up the good work.

Yes! this is getting better and better!
Very nice hand! I like a lot the bare unfleshed arm bones idea. I don't think the torso is bad at all! don't get discouraged come on, start gluing the pieces! :D

Teach you? I'd love to make a tutorial sometime... But, to be honest, I have just recently learned a ton myself and I haven't quite perfected what I have learned yet. Maybe in the next couple of months.
Here is my updated torso...

Hey Sirchced I just have to say that I think your character is absolutely incredible! :)
I LOVE THE TEETH!!!!!! They just make him look SO cool!:D
Brilliant.
Simply brilliant.
Amazing.

Thanks Liegh. That means a lot coming from the texturing goddess. Do you do texture work for a living?
I was going to post an update today, but I left it at my brothers house... bummer.
New image tomorrow... I promise.

I love the hands, but I have some problems with the torso : the pec's definition is a bit too strong IMO.
Very good work, I like it !

03-21-2002, 10:13 PM
I'm getting there. The toughest parts for me are done anyway. I plan on adding a lot of details like scars and veins and such. But, so far I am pretty happy with how he is turning out. What do you all think?
sweet dude
just awsome
the only thing that catches my eye is the elbows or should i say lack there of... it matches the concept (which i love) but in 3d i cant say i like it as much
just my opinion though
That is just great, really awesome.
Keep working and posting
Teyon
03-22-2002, 08:28 AM
Very cool. There's the elbow and the hands, actually. The hands are a little large but I like them that way...sort of stylized look. People tend to forget that part of art is self expression and not always realism. Go for it, bud!
Joel Hooks
03-22-2002, 11:13 AM
whoa. That is seriously cool. Are you going to model any guts?
I love those hands. The wrist bone structure is wierd, but that is just nitpick.
MORE!
Sirchced
03-22-2002, 04:19 PM
Ya... I do plan on giving him some gutts, maybe a lung and a bit of his intestine hanging out. I plan on doing the rest of his body first before the details.
Thank you everyone for your comments.

Hey Sirchced - AWESOME!!! :)
Wow, he is just so cool!!
And, yeah, I'm an animator at a visual effects company, but I specialise in texturing, and do pretty much all the texturing for the work we do :)
Looking forward to more updates... :D

Very nice face. I like the torso structure and the keen arms. I might suggest to make those ribs alittle more anatomically correct. They look a little akward. Other than that, though, I really like where the model is going.
Keep at it man. :bounce:

Just to let everyone know... I am not going for realism. Nuf said.

great proportions, I really like it! tihs remember me characters from game fightings (japaneses ones) Always found cool the way the push the muscles.. good work!

03-29-2002, 10:08 PM
Thank you, Pascal. Getting any kind of complement from you is an honor. You're the kind of modeler that I aspire to be like. You are truly amazing. I would love to pick your brain if you ever had the time.
I haven't been having as much luck with the legs as I had anticipated. I'm still learning a lot. Some days it seems like I work forever on one thing and I get nothing out of it. So, it's been frustrating and rewarding as well. That's why it is taking me so long to update... also, I haven't had much time lately. Sorry to anyone looking for updates. I will be posting again soon. Thanks for your patience.
oh Sirchced~!
ur model is gorgeous~!
keep it up~!
:)
well, the deadline is near.. do u think we can finish it?
Sirchced
04-04-2002, 10:14 AM
Well, it's official... I give up. I am either not good enough to complete this model in the amount of time that I have had or I just haven't had enough time. Either way, I can not complete it right now. Sorry everyone.
ALso, I won't be taking part in anymore challenges. The feedback just hasn't been enough to warent putting more time into them.
So, goodbye and happy modeling. It's been fun. :)

04-04-2002, 10:49 AM
That's a shame. What sort of feedback are you looking for? I really wanted to see the guts :)
It's a hell of a model, would be a crime to lay it to waste.

Finish this model!
It's so different from everything else you've just got to complete it.
Nice to see something that isn't straight out of the "artist's handbook for CG demons."
Chicken-legs, cloven hooves and bat wings on Arnold Scwarzenegger bodies with the obligatory devilish horns thrown in for good measure.
But not you.
Nice to see some lateral thinking for a change.:p

like dude what the hell is your problem man,i mean this is suppose to be challenege ,a challenege for students and professionals in the 3d field so how in the hell are you going to tell me that you are going to back down, please dont give me that crap now if youre busy or working on an important project i could understand but its just because you dont know how to do the legs, then why dont you post it up and we will help you ake them better dont expect to get comments on something that we cant even see.dud if you cant do this than i think you are in the wrong major. come on man just send in some images and we will help you out ,sheesh you have pascal saying that youre stuff is cool and i really respect the guy as a modeller along with a lot of other people that replied to your thread so just stop trippin and get your a** on the ball.sorry about that but i had to say it.

Don't quit....I'll put a hex on your computer and your render times will increase ten fold! I'll curse your mouse and it will forever have dead skin cell build up on it!
Please don't get discouraged and give up. This is a truly excellent piece and it deserves to be finished. You've displayed more talent in this one model than I think I'll display in the next 10 years!

04-05-2002, 09:49 AM
Dude,
I thought that you had one of the coolest concepts around. At the very least finish it for yourself, and even if it does not help you learn a lot, spectators who are just looking on stand to gain from techniques you use.
I think a lot of people have had a look at your work, and a large proportion actually replied (compared to threads like mine). I just hope that you said that you were not doing any more challenges coz you were having a bad day.
:wip: Keep at it man- it would be a shame if we could not learn from what you have to show on this forum.
Teyon
04-05-2002, 09:55 AM
Yeah, finish it and post it in the non-challenge forum. We still want to see the final piece and it really would be a tragedy not to complete it (then it would've been a waste of time and effort). Don't quit.
Sirchced
04-10-2002, 05:48 PM
Thanks everyone for your support and kind words. I will finish the model sometime. I want to use it in my demo reel that my brother and I are putting together. I just don't plan on doing anymore challenges anytime soon. It's a lot of time to waste when I have other things that my brother is counting on me for.
If you all really want to help then keep us in mind when you meet people who are hiring for this type of work... We (my brother and I) are both looking for work.
I was hoping that posting to this site would help us get some clients or help me to get some tips on how to model like the pros, but neither has happened. And, after thinking about it, it makes sense considering the majority of people who come to this site are modelers themselves who are all competing to look good. Instead, I have been aching to learn on my own to fit a deadline that I didn't make while pushing aside my responsibilities with my brother. Well, I can't do that anymore. I have to be more focused on the goals that my brother and I have set for ourselves. I hope you can all understand that.
As I said, I will finish that model in time. When I do, I will post it on our site http://www.dbanimation.com. I might even place the model itself on my site for download. But that won't be anytime soon... I am working on another project that takes priority over this model.
Thanks again. I hope you all get those kick ass modeling jobs and make a living doing what you love. God knows, I've been trying for years. Please let me know if I can ever help.
Later yall.
