View Full Version : the EYE
Gemini 01-13-2003, 05:14 AM hi all, i was just wondering if i could get some comments on how to make this eye better. it is intentionally blood shot and i know that the eyelashes leave a lot to be desired. feel free to give advice/comments on anything besides the texture as it was only a test. i appreciate your time, thanks

Well, I think the first thing that jumps out at me is the lack of any gloss or reflections.
I'm going to go out on a limb and also say that I don't think you have lit the scene yet...It looks like default lighting. When you are trying to get something as complex as a wet eyeball to look right, you have to do some lighting work first.
Add a reflection map of some sort, bump up the gloss, and don't use a procedural shader for the blood-shot veins.
Also looks like you may have just used a sphere. Eyes have a lense which is convex, and the pupils that are concave, which adds alot of subtle shading and refraction effects. Model the eye correctly and you will really see a difference.
Hope that's of some help.

thanks for the reply. you are correct in saying that the scene hasn't been lit yet. the eye is actually modeled anatomically correct, though i see what you meen because it does look pretty flat. i'll play with reflections and see what happens. thanks again

I forgot to say one little thing, btw.
It looks pretty damn good.
Actually, the eye did look anatomically correct due to the light penetration, but I had to cover my rear incase I was wrong. :D
Like I said, lighting is king when it comes to eyes.
I look forward to your changes.
