View Full Version : learning maya modeling...questions...
ok, i've got the maya 4.5 PLE and i'm attempting to get the hang of this after some experience in other packages (very early versions of max then a decent amount of playing with lightwave 5.5). i've been going thru the instant maya tutorials which aren't bad, the program as a whole is just a bit overwhelming.
the whole nurbs/subdiv/polys option is a bit weird as i'm used to just working strictly with polygons. i understand the basics of how each works and what they're used for, but is there an area i should focus/get the hang of first that'll make the others easier, will i use one more than the others, etc.? just looking for some guidance and general info at this point, thanks.

well my suggestion is to learn all 3 methods, because for every project there will be a better method for it , eg a car would be best to do in nurbs or a human or cartoon character in sub-d or poly and so on , but m y suggestion is to start of with polygons then nurbs and sub divisions once you learn all 3 then it will be alot easier to decide which method to use for a certain model , also in maya i find myself converting the geometry back and forth at times i will start polys then convert to sub divisions or start nurbs get a good shape going then switch to polys and add detail
well i know its kinda long but i hope it helps somewhat

I been using Maya now for over eight months, and I'm definitely still a beginner. Maya is a vast long hike that takes a while to conguer. I'm experienced in polygon modeling using FormZ, which if you don't know about, is a very robust modeling program. Maya 's polygon tool set is not a full as those of programs like formZ or lightwave, but its nurbs modeling tools are very good.
My suggestion to anyone is: Don't feel like you have to abonden what you alreay know just because you are learning Maya, but instead, realize that this is an opportunity to learn nurbs modeling if you are used to polygon modeling or whatever you haven't tried before. Also, take a little time to figure out how to move models between programs. No one single program is the best for everything. They all have their strenghts and weaknesses. What do you want to concentrate on?
As far as what kind of path will make it easier to figure out the others, I would say not having to unlearn what you know. Go with nurbs in Maya if you already know how to model in polys in lightwave. If its all new to you, then it doesn't really matter. You gotta just jump in...
thanks for the feeback guys, i appreciate it. i'm working on getting the hang of the poly tools as that's something i understand a bit more, then i'll be moving more into sub-d's and nurbs.
as far as learning the whole package in general, would you suggest focusing on a certain area first (like modeling or lighting) and feeling comfortable with that before moving on, or rather trying projects that'll force me to do different things (model, texture, and light) in the package? just wondering what learning methods people have found best, thanks.
