Title: What Lies In Wait
Name: Renee Bailey
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Well, this was a mish mash wasn't it.

This is my most ambitious project as yet - and I'm discovering that I'm learning quite a bit from my mistakes! I don't mind making them, since I'm relatively new to this it's the best way I learn without a teacher :)

I did use photo references for everything in here (except the cobwebs and dress) Which is probably obvious! :)

My aim in posting this is to hear crits on how to improve my technical ability - I feel like my brush strokes aren't there or I am just aimlessly plugging away testing brushes out all the time to try and get what I want. It feels a little out of control and I am frustrated by this! :) I also posted it because I can't work on it anymore, there was a point where I realized that I just had to stop, ya know?

I do not go to Art School (nor have I ever been -- it's probably sickeningly obvious :( sorry ) but I have been plugging away for 7 months so far - and hopefully I improve as I go. Anything you can give me advice on as far as style/techniques go would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance for even looking :)

All done in photoshop CS2, 8+ hours or so. Lost track :)

Hey man, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself, your painting looks good! You are self taught and only 7 months into that, your doing great :)

I really like the composition of your image it draws me in and getting the perspective on the circles and archs would have been quite a challenge so you have done well there.

There maybe one or 2 places where the perspective is a bit off mostly it is to do with how the girl sits in the image her perspective or angle is a bit off somewhere but other than that your getting there. Practise practise Practise is the best way to learn. And I know exactly what you mean about not being able to work on a project anymore, there is no point carring on working on something if your not enjoying it anymore, let it go and move on.

I read once a quote from a concept artist that went something like "When I am learning a new technique or skill I like to get through my first 20-30 paintings or so and make all my mistakes as quick as possible and not worry about it, that is the quickest way to learn by making your own mistakes and experimenting"

I am in a similar situation to you so i can relate, I am a trained designer/artist however I am learning new things here, I am trying to learn about concept art and matte painting and even though I have a degree in animation I am struggling with the same things as you, sure some of my drawing skills are transferable but a lot of the techniques are new to me.

I think you just need to keep at it, you are doing fantastic so far :) Your picking this type/style of art up quicker than me and I went to university :)

Keep at it buddy!

Wow, thank you so much for being so kind Martski :) Sometimes its really nice to hear a few words of encouragement.

Don't get me wrong though, I love crits! :D

I totally understand how I could have some perspective issues, since this is basically two seperate photo references that I tried to 'match' the best I could. Also, the canvas I used didn't perfectly match the size of the 'arches' so I had to wing it. For the arches, I just did it by eye (and after I blocked in, I figured out the line tool could help me out, haha!)

The girl I used the grid system for, and even there I made some mistakes. But I plug away - despite my occasional frustration, I realize that I will learn - since earlier on in this journey I have felt the very same way, and pushed through it.

You are very kind to have stopped and taken the time to reply, and with such kind words of praise and encouragement and critique. It means a lot, thank you so much! :)

Oooo! Spooky, that looks like some kind of stretchy figure. Like a viscous shadow or something made out of tar/pitch. Creepy *shudder*.:thumbsup:

It's kinda hard to keep track of you when you don't have a wip thread. ;);)

This piece looks good runecaster. I'd say your environment (and mood) is done well and don't worry about the cob webs. You've achieved the necessary effect. No need to detail them so perfectly(it's the girl that's the subject anyway). My issue with this piece is that I think a person would rather turn from the hips than twist their arm so far back like that. Maybe move her arm forward a bit and lessen the twist on the hand? It might correct the posture more without having to redraw the upper body into a sort of 3/4th view. The creases on the dress are too hard as well... soften them up more so it makes the dress flow down softly.

7 months and you're doing better than most people Renee. Just keep marching. :bounce:
