hi i have watched a gnomon ryan church dvd -and i woud like to know a technique of his he aways uses -he copies the picture (or part of it) then pastes it back on top registers it and paints in lighting etc-- why does he do this? (as say opposed to just putting up a blank layer)

Because the way Ryan uses the glow brush it brings out the colors of the watercolor wash he throws up ahead of time. If you do it on a blank layer there is no real color mixing and sometimes you'll get some dark edges around the glows. You dont, however, have to register it everytime, if you press shift when Ctrl + V pasting it will register it for you.
