I just can't figure this out!

I have a simple scene of a room lit by the sun with a fairly uncomplex item in it. When I render in Mental Ray I can't get the image to look clean and free of artifacts. I even set the Final Gather to 3500 and I still get jaggy lines through out the scene. Sometimes so bad that I can't get any detail on the umcomplex item, and the shadows are all blotchy.

I have tried all the types of lights and all the types of shadows but still it always looks the same.

In fact when I use the mr spot light (for my sun) the scene looks worse, almost like it is using the depth of field. I tried using the depth of field but later decided I did not want to use it, so I turned it off. Is there something else I need to do to turn off the depth of field besides unchecking the enable option?

any clue?

Thanks!

I'm no expert but try playing with the bias?(i think) That could blur it for you. Also, if you use photons and include global illum you can get better results. Using both final and global you can use up to one third the photons you would usually use for just the GI. This shouldn't take tooo much longer than the renders time you may be seeing now. Again, I am by no means and expert (im a noobie) but this may help.

What are the full list of settings that you are using now... this would be helpful

final gather= 3500 but what is the rest set at? It is always better not to use 0's in the equation so that mental ray doesnt just try to figure it out. Start with #s in the other values so that you can eliminate those artifacts

you might want to check http://www.jeffpatton.net/ or ask him. you can find him in the 3ds max mental ray shaders thread

What settings do yo have in the Sampling? If I remember correctly, if you set the "Preview Final Gather" preset, you get Min Sampling of -1 and Max Sampling of 1. Try changing it to something like 0 and 2.
On the other hand, if you set too much filtering, then it will blur the details together. So I would say, start by bringing the FinalGather down to, like 500, and the Sampling as above. Try using ray traced shadows, to ensure the aliasing isn't due to Dmaps with too low resolution.
Also, if you are using file textures with lots of detail, and especially if used as bump maps, check the "Prefilter" button right below (or is it above?) the filename.
One site I truly recommend for FinalGather settings is
http://lamrug.org/resources.html
Look under the Option Settings section, there are examples of settings other people use, you may want to try them.
I hope it helps.
