View Full Version : Trying to model a head
al_majors 01-13-2003, 12:31 AM This is the first male head that I've attempted to model. I'm not so worried about the texture as I am trying to get the model itself to look real. This head was done in max 5.

he looks really good. The cheek area kinda looks inflated and the forehead I don't think is high enough. Throw away your reference pics at this point and adjust it by your eye. Cheers!

Well, good start. But it is not porportional. The head should be 5 eyes wide, nose is one eye, eyes are two more, then the last area is the size of another eye. the area above the top of the eye to top of head, should be equal to the area between top of eyes and chin, these two areas form the facial region and cranal area. The head it self has a ratio of Height to width of 3:2 meaning the width of the head should be 2 thirds the height. The nose bottom should be placed exactly halfway in the facial region. the bottom of the lip should be placed 2 thirds down in the bottom nose to chin area. Hope this helps, there are plenty more porportions, I could go on all day, but those are the most important.

lerpiedood, could you please post a link to an image showing all that you say about proportions? It really would be very interesting.
al_majors, it would help a lot if you put some more views of that head :D

Well, I stopped using the ref pic when I got the rough outline modelled. I'll try to adjust the cheecks. Here's what I got right now:

Hi, I think you've got the general head there, but that geometry is going to cause you issues. I am going to reccomend this tutorial:
http://www.thehobbitguy.com/tutorials/polymodeling/index.html
Just the first few pages where he sets up the initial foundation. Proper Edge Loops can make all the difference in the world when modeling organics.
This guy does a great job with his mesh:

Anyway, great start - I just wanted to point a couple of cool resources out.

it seems you have some problems with the edgeloops. Check some wireframe pictures of faces to see more clearly how it should be. Check this one: http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/head_tutorial/head.asp

I've remodelled most of the head (changed the loops of the poly's) and I think that this version is much smoother, and uses less polygons than the previous one.

Here is the actual mesh of the model
