Hello everyone,

A friend of mine is making a short film and he has asked me to make a CG creature for it, in which I was more than happy to do, but when I'm done I'll need to light it and match it frame for frame to the actor he has a stand in. Has anyone here done this before and if so could you help me out.

Thanks

Monkeycorn

This is a bit of a long and arduous process if you attempt to make it exact; luckily, if you match it dead on, it'll often look unrealistic.

One thing you can do, is attach ping pong balls to tight non-restrictive clothing and such--a lot of motion capture people do this, but it can help when copying movement when you're working by hand.

I'm not sure about Maya, but 3D Studio Max allows you to have a material (IE on a plane), as well as a background as a video which will play as you progress through the frames. The biggest issue is that you'll only get one side of the actor; therefore, if you have access to another camera somewhere, then I suggest using it from one side, and the other from another side, so you're not doing as much guess work.

Thanks for the help TnTcheats,

Sounds like all I need are some markers and two camera angles, and eyeball the rest? There must be more to it than that, really??? Max doesn't have any tools or plugins to help match at all? hmm......

This page may help, not specific to 3ds, but I believe Icarus does export in 3ds format:
