View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Character - Clanger
Clanger 01-12-2003, 10:16 PM I've been away from my computer since before the challenge was anounced but I've managed to sneak a quick go on someones elses.
I've looked at the subject (bloody wonderful) and something has immediately come to mind:
The Fangi:
A race of Mushroom men living in Fangorn, created by an overspill of magic coming from the Ents.
At the moment I can't look at anyone elses thread so is anyone else doing fungi based life?
I don't want to copy anyone.

Nope, I don't think anyone else has thought of fungi based lifeforms :)
So go ahead!!! :xtreme:
Good luck for the challenge, good to see you here! :D

The green light, excellent. What a relief I've been sketching before I could check on the challenge and I had everything crossed, didn't fancy scrapping it all.
I did have a back up though, a cross between a man and a Dragon a little like a centaur.
But mushrooms it is.
I love mushroom men ! and this one is cool! keep it up...

You could have a few Hippie ones that glow in the dark as well!!!
:D , No wonder they see fairies in those woods!

Thanks for the kind words.
Here's a small update, first polys placed, probably all of them will be changed before long just getting a feel for it.

Looks like a good start, Clanger
Be sure to make that face really detailed when you round to details, eh ;)

Great start! Can't wait to see it later, you gonna use SSS for the cap?

...Good start, the idea is very original... it'll be great you have time to texture it... kep it up.

BlueCougar:
Haven't thought about SSS, when I've tried it in the past it's been too slow but maybe I could give it a go.
polart:
There should be plenty of time to texture, my work levels are very erratic and I've been caught out without enough time to finish in past challenges so I've purposely gone for a simple model I can finish quickly then spend all the time on really getting the textures and lighting right.
Well, that's the plan we shall see.
He won’t need an umbrella if it rains!
Nice idea though. I can see it with a red and white spotted top.
I always make the mistake of trying to create something with really complicated geometry and then run out of time with the texturing.

He is funny. Really nice Clanger.
The nose reminds me of your own........This isn't a way of furfilling your dream, is it?
You know the one that you always wanted to play a role in a LoTR sequel!:p

BladeFX: Thanks
minus: You can't have too many mushrooms. It's very interesting seeing how you're going to tackle the same problems.
Iguiniz.X.: Must have been subconsious but I do see it now. If they want me to play the Fangi I'm ready for it.

Now that is uncanny!
I was looking at Remi's entry, and decided that there's still time, so I pulled out some sheets of paper and started sketching. I thought of a race of mushrooms, and drew three sketches before opening this thread!
:surprised :argh:
Your design is much better though! Keep it up!
(Back to the sketchin' for me!)
P.S, love the original sketch, looks so fitting for LOTR!

Don't see why you can't do a mushroom man as well, the more the merrier I say.

Pushed and pulled a few verts but mostly trying to get the eyes right, far from happy though.
BladeFX

I think if you'd bandsaw 2 lines around the eyes, you could make a nice ripple which you could use to place some accents.
nice work though

BladeFX:
Don't know what bandsaw is but if you mean add some more edge loops around the eyes and sculpt some extra details (bags and stuff) then I think your right. Will have it change by tomorrows update.

Clanger...hi, love it...alot of good personality to it:thumbsup:
bandsaw: if your using lightwave(which it looks like)..select a row (or part of a row) of cointinuous poly's...go to "Construct" tab look for "Bandsaw"..it will slice the poly's in two (or more, you can control how many and where) ...you will now have two rows of poly's...
Clanger

pigwater:
Ah I see, select a row of edges and use 'connect' in Max, shame on me for not using Lightwave.

He can pick his nose now.
BladeFX
01-22-2003, 08:43 PM
Clanger, isn't that a hole below his chin?
perhaps 2 polys crossing.
he can pick that one alright ;)
Clanger

BladeFX : He's still only one half with a temporary mirrored other side. At some point I will join then move things around to kill the perfect symetry look.
Just had a thought (that's a first) wouldn't it be great if someone created a basic background scene, converted it to all the popular 3D program formats so we all could place our creations in this scene and render out. This render could then be comped into one great big file.

Erik:
There's a hundred things wrong with the final image, only excuse is the usual one 'no time', I threw the final render together in the last 5mins I had.
This was the best subject for a challenge ever and I'm so pissed off work got in the way again. Sometimes I hate I work freelance on call 24-7.
Next time hopfully.............
