View Full Version : Exploring Middle Earth - Death Scene - dmcgrath
dmcgrath 01-12-2003, 10:50 PM Okay I just started my character for this one. I'm thinking of something along a Balrog that is a little "TOO" theatrical about his death scene.
I'm not sure on the story board yet, because I would like to use the scene flapper to start the scene. And then have him with a spear in him, flailing away ridiculously.
I'll get the story board up and hopefullly a character made within the next 24-hours.

Here is the "simple" character. Now I have to rig it and test it out.

Thanks Joz, well here is the first installment, the storyboards (pretty quick and basic stuff).
I want him to land and then duck something (a rock) being hurled at his head. He laughs it off... and gets a spear right in the center of his chest. Then he begins to wildly over act a death scene, causing much hilarity by the crew watching the scene(of course they are off camera and therefore imaginary.).

Here's the animatic! I am really enjoying this. I've never made anything "overact" before. It's really a blast to do a cartoon style animation.

This is a slightly bigger and higher quality gif file. But it's really the same thing. (212K) (http://www.spatiallight.net/animationPage/images/animaticSeq01Large.gif)

Great animatic, maybe he should fold his wings behind him when he lands.
What app are you using and did you render as individual frames ?

Hey,
Very dramatic:applause:
How about he clutches at the camera with his last dying gasp?
If you are going for melodrama, I'd really go overboard.

thanks guys.
vertex: I am still working on getting the wings to fold back nicely, maybe I'll change them a little more. Also, I use Maya, and yes I did render individual frames then I comped them in Image Ready and made a .gif.
srv: I love the idea of grabbing the camera at the end. Maybe I'll turn this into a whole blooper style animation, like from Bugs Life, or Monsters Inc. Like have the camera fall over and have some crew in the background. If I have the time. I'm back in school next week and might be back doing lots of homework.
heres an update on the model's head. I think since he is going to be so close to the camera I'll use a simple blend shape for the eyes and mouth.

I'm reposting a smaller file, its a little more complete for the spear in the chest part. It may be a little slow for the reactions, let me know if you think so.

Are you still going to do the dramatic staggering about etc in final animation?

Yeah I'm still going for the dramatic staggering and the passing out at the end. But this thing has gone WAY over 15 seconds.
I think I'm going to have to cut a part of it out for the competition, but I'll keep working on it for my demo reel. I'm happy with the idea I have. I just need more input here.

Heres my newest bit. A little faster reaction on the spearing. And some tail movement.
Divx 5.02 again...

this looks awesome...I do think he needs to do the old looney tunes heel spin before he finally hits the dirt though.
