Your friend is very much mistaken. As long as you're not using an educational version of the software, you can use it for any commercial work you want - that's what it's for.

And I thought $7000+ for Maya unlimited was expensive on my income! Wowza.

Although that 7k I paid sure as hell felt like 30k. Now it feels like one of the better buys I've made in a while.
