Hey! :wavey:

Yes, the two books are different. They'd better be, as both were published by the same publisher in the same month!!

Both books provide an introduction to MEL scripting at the beginning, but ours (MEL Scripting for Maya Animators) is a LOT more oriented toward production MEL examples while David's (Complete Maya Programming) instead discusses the API and plug-in development.

I'm excited to get David's book for the API material, which we didn't come close to discussing, but our book offers lots of discussion about how to use MEL in effects animation and character rigging that David's book didn't really touch.

Honestly, I'd rather have both than either one alone.

I don't know if the author, David Stripinis, is here to defend himself :) but he's told me, at least, that he's taking a somewhat different approach than MEL Scripting for Maya Animators.

MEL Scripting for Maya Animators is strong in effects and character rigging examples with a gentle introduction to programming.

David Stripinis's MEL Companion book covers modeling tools and user interfaces in more depth without all the effects and character rigging focus (though he does have a section on dynamics.)

I gather, from talking to David (who may well be the only person on Earth who's seen all three books), that the overlap between any two of the books (the third being Complete Maya Programming with its API coverage) is probably no more than about 50%. I'm certainly planning on having all of them handy.
