View Full Version : Maya Occlusion Transparency
chellescreations 06-13-2006, 12:22 AM I have a maya scene using ambient occlusion and it is rendering my transparency mapped objects as solids. I set up the scene by putting all objects in a Render Layer then using the layers' right click menu's preset for Occlusion. I'm sure that there are better ways to set up the render but I don't know too much about occlusion and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

yeah about that I'm also dealing with this issue apparenlty my only solution so far is to use the alpha maps of the diffuse layer in post_production...hope that helps
Same as Annhialator's method
Sometimes I'll separate this layer out if there have objects behind the transparent object

try connecting the occlusion node's output to a surface shader, then you can set the transparency of the surface shader.

OK, I'll give that a try. Thanks a lot guys!

hmm... well guys. it still doesn't work with transparency.
i even tried the new AO feature wit the mia_material under Maya 8.5 still the same.
i guess there is a solution with holger shönebergers MR shader collection:
http://www.binaryalchemy.de/index_dev.htm
but could't make a test yet.
once there was also a shader collection that worked, and is still available at highend called:
toLight but only to mr 3.3.
you can find it on www.thereisnoluck.com (http://www.thereisnoluck.com)

Well, i once faced the same problem with transparency.. But I found the way even though its a long way around.. Instead of turning the render layer for Occlusion U can simply change the software render into maya mental ray and Creat a Surface shader with ambience occlusion shader loaded and it does got the transparency node attached to it. U can map the transparency map for all the objects that has to be transparent and the rest can be left without it.. U might have to creat as many surface shader as there are many objects.. It workded for me. I once converted the maya paint effects trees to mesh and tried with occlusion.. Lesson learned in harder way.
