CRT's hurt my eyes pretty bad. And unless it's a really good CRT I've ben disappointed with a lot of them. Go for a dell 2005fpw lcd:

As for standard non-wide screens, I'd go for a 20" LCD - for not so big a price you get a 1600x1200 screen that doesn't take up all of your desk space. This should be good enough for most purposes. Later on you can always add a secondary. I don't like 19" LCDs because of their 1280x1024 res - never liked that res in particular (different image aspect ratio - 1,25 instead of the more usual 1,33 image aspect).
They're just scaled up 17" screens, really.. However, if you're doing DTP or anything where you need perfect color definition, then your best bet would be something along the lines of a large quality CRT - Iiyama springs to mind..
