Oooookayz...here's my entry. I pray to the elders that I finish this time...

Little is known of this race and few have seen them but they do exist, the smorks! Sauron use these little creatures, distant relatives of orcs as spies in the depths of Moria since he does not always trust his orc minions. They are quick on their feet, very stealthy and have an amazing sight in darkness due to their highly lightsensitive eyes. Many an orc and dwarf has been found poisoned to death in side corridors where they probably stepped on these little critters, drawing lethal fluids from the many spikes on their armor.
http://home.tiscalinet.ch/cgtalk/pics/lotr_wip/smork_sketch.jpg
This is a really rough and crappy Photoshop sketch...I only knew I wanted a creature with large eyes that might remind a bit of Gollum (the both live in darkness after all) but much thinner, smaller and armored...it'll probably evolve from this sketch during modelling. The model will sport more stuff like a dagger, more pouches etc. as well.
Well, on with it! :D
[addition]: Sheep Factory is creating the smork's nemesis...UG the smorkstomper!

Yeeees, Wiro's in too! Now somebody call Matt Clark :)
Nice concept there... my only question is, how can anyone be thinner than Gollum? :)
An idea: for the really dark areas, it should use it's other senses too. Namely, hearing and touching - so give him even bigger bat-like ears and large, sensitive fingertips!
\o/ HURRAH! \o/
good luck with the challenge wiro :)

Oh god, tell me this isn't true, if this is like you say a really rough and crappy Photoshop sketch then don't wanna see what's to come. I'm gonna jump out from the window! :insane: Wait, it's only half a meter to the ground... hmmm... I am trying now for hours to make a decent sketch but I don't even have yet a concrete idea...
Well, anyway, your sketch rocks :buttrock:, the story is cool... but, HA! Your homepage wasn't updated since 22.10.02! I hope you'll show us soon what you were doing all the time! Oh, and yeah, this time finish the model! :wip:

Great to see you will be taking part for this challenge Wiro. It seems that most of the better talent out there are in for this one. Many great pieces of work are about to be born.
The extra large eyes are both perfect and realistic for a cave dweller of the darker regions, large eyes are a requirement for creatures who can see in the dark.:)
It's going to be fun following your progress, very happy to see you in.
Arghhh! The pressure!!! Man, so many replies and I've not even started yet! *revs up 3dsmax*
Coco: yeah, it was a quick 15min sketch and compared to some of the really cool entries here (like Bentllama's) it sucks :D
It took me longer to "shade" it, heh...I'm so rusty in drawing now.
And I can't update my homepage! For some reason I can't upload anything...gotta change host.
Laa-Yosh: bigger ears coming up! I like that idea with the senses ;)

It's going to be a nice one. The big ears idea is a good one,I thought that too when I first saw it. It kind of looks a little like an alien crash landed on Middlearth and mixed with Gollum somehow, and this is the outcome of there labors.;)

:P
This is embarrasing...3 pages of replies without an update...sorry guys :)
Wanted to spend more time on it this weekend but there's always some distraction. Anyway, here's what I got out of around 2h of modelling. I'm not entirely sure about the proportions yet...I'm still tugging around on jawsize, chin, eyes, etc but basically this'll be it.
The ears are only temporary. I stole some off an old model and pulled some verts around. The real ears will be built from scratch.
I don't have a smoothed version yet. I usually model everything "lowpoly" first to get rough forms without trying to make it look good when sudivided as well.

Wiro: You and Fellah both have something in common. You both have "Stompers" after your creations......:p
You have Sheep factory's UG's, and Fellah will have my "Bastard Stompers".......the "Scaliwags"( Soon to be shown;) )...........
Your character looks fun, really interesting with those night vision eyes and poisonous spikes..........But you know kind of scary too. Like a tough lil' dude. Better watch him type. Sheep's UG's better watch themselves.;)
You should take a part off of Sheep's Ug's ( Nose,ears,etc,etc...)and place them as little decorations upon your Little beastie, a ring or necklace perhaps....
;) :p
I look forward to your next update.

I took up some more modelling today...fiddled around with proportions and edgeplacement. The eyes are much bigger now and I made the mouth smaller. He's got more of a pigsnose as well. Still not quite satisfied with the mouth so that's gonna get an overhaul.
Started with ears and thought I should post an update before I finish them.
As usual, a smoothed version will follow as soon as I've got the rough look I want.

I think its looking a little too cute at the mo. Sticking with your concept, i think the mouth and snout should be brought forward a bit, and bring the chin up and fatter IMO. also i think the pointy ears on the concept suited better. good start tho:thumbsup:
New update. Sort of finished ear, changed some mouth geometry, added teeth, hair and warts. First smoothed render.

AJ_23 and show: HAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, maybe the ears are too floppy. I was thinking something along the lines of bats for this instead of elven ears. This guy is little so the ears aren't actually that big :)
Coco: thanks alot man! Yeah I've had a busy week. There aren't many obvious changes because most of them were subtle proportion alterations or me tidying up edges.
Shoey: hehehe, yeah...damn maybe I did make him too cute. The big soft ears don't really help his image as the hard dude of moria. I'm gonna add more edges to the ears next and maybe make his eyes scowl a bit more.
I'm only following the sketch very losely...some things just worked better on paper than in 3D.
Would like to know other people's opinions! Thanks!

I like the update, Wiro. The ear hairs are a nice addition. I would suggest, maybe, the addition of more ridges\undulations in the flat area of the giant ears.
Also, will the character have eyelids?
cool update, but the same problem as before, his skull is looking wrong, its too big... (as in your tutorial, its the same mistake)
The face is really cool, but i'd prefer to see some eyelids, and please don't let the wrinkles on his mouth look like scars/cuts, if you wanted em to look like this, ok but this is kinda disturbing me :p
ilasolomon
02-03-2003, 07:35 AM
U da Master!  (feed us more & sooner please!)
mtmckinley and ila_solomon: Thanks! :)
Sausage: more detail on ear coming up! Eyelids....hm, I was planning on leaving him as is, but on second thought...it would allow him more expressions. Okay eyelids next.
Neox : Thanks. But the skullsize is how i want it. He's not human so there is no "proper" proportion to it. Also as he's supposed to be tiny I wanted to make him a bit childlike in proportions.
Almost the same goes for the tutorial; the girl is not realistic but a bit on the cartoon side. Apart from the larger skull you will have noticed she has very big eyes and a small nose too :)
Those wrinkles aren't scars but layers of skin/muscle that will stretch when the mouth opens. It'll be clear when (if) textured
:)
sure i recognized that your girl ain't realistic, but her skull is going down to her teeth (normaly it ends on the height of the nose), thats looking kinda crazy, but maybe its just my stupid opinion :D

Back again...modeled a bit yesterday. Added some detail to the head again. Some changes to nose and mouth, added eyelids, changed ears a bit and fixed the skull thing Neox mentioned.
Also started blocking out the body. What do you think about the proportions? I know it's really rough but it gives an idea of how I want the body to look like.

I am very impressed once again................I really enjoy your style and creativity, really brilliant.
This guy has top notch written all over him.At first I was a bit apprehensive I must admit.I thought he had potential and knowing your talent I figured he would round out to be another high quality creation. So I said to myself..............Be patient. And yet again patience has proven to be the best virtue.
The nose is quite original,I really like the fold of flesh/skin over the nostrils,unique/speacial come to mind.
The eye's although not finished show tons of potential as well.I love that over-sized look, particularily with this Lil' beast. I await the gleam and shine in them when you can get to them.
:)
The wispy hair the over sized ears also look great. The ears I thought at first were a bit much..................But as I look upon them now I see they do belong just as they are.Nice shape, the curvature too is very appealing.
Sharp teeth too show he can handle his own within the World of Middle-earth.I hope in time you will show him in a extra pose or two, possibly a smile,or grimace,etc,etc...An animation too would be extra sweet,I'll cross my fingers for that to happen someday.:)
Wiro I don't know if you have seen Fellahs creation, the Lil'Bastard.................I would really like to see both of your creations in a small battle of some kind. They look like they belong together. Both Fantastic, and I think really would be speacial to see together, maybe even as partners doing damage in Middle-earth.
As for the head size............Yes I think that ol' Disney formula of squash and streatch, exxageration would work well with your creation. More size would fit him better,at least in my opinion.
Just a thought but.................Maybe you can shorten the thighs and calves just a wee bit. More of that squat look. I also think that perhaps the arms could be made extra long...........you know a knuckle dragger, long and spindly, with wispy hair and some scaling to the skin, blemishes, splotches of peeling skin, grime and dirt mixed in with a shiney glossiness of what his skin had once been before.
I think too extra long hands with long fingers, large portruding knuckles, boney elbows and knees. Extra thin ankles,to emphasise calves with short but wirey muscles.
Well as you see I have some thoughts,I really am interested in seeing this beautiful lil' guy get to the finish line,if not for this challenge compleatly than afterwards in your free time, ( If you get any ;) ) I think it would be well worth your efforts.
I hope to see more when possible, great thus far,Fantastic in fact, keep going,I;ll keep an eye out for your progress. :applause:

That's a nice little guy! great head, I love those hair... I think the proportions are ok. Keep it up!
Thanks alot for your reply Virtuoso, the detailed critisizm is very much appreciated!
Hehehe, I know the beginning didn't look like much. I'd never shown the sketch if it hadn't been mandatory ;)
The changes from the first head WIP til now don't look like much but there are still subtle differences that makes it look way more interesting than the *garlg* first steps.
I'm gonna add some more detail to the eye and also model the eyeball (it's just a sphere now) but I'll get back to that when I got the body.
Yeah, the ears looked like slippers before, hahaha, hope they're better now.
I love Fellah's creation! Yeah they could be the good/evil twins :D
I'll give him a pose later...the lowpoly sketch shows him in a more default pose. His normal pose would be on all fours, running a bit like an ape on it's knuckles.
I've given him longer arms and shorter legs now. He'll have huge knuckly hands with long nails too.
I won't finish in time for the challenge but I'll continue working on him outside of it for sure.
Thanks to ila_solomon and m@ too! :D

  ...................I am in love............
Shorter legs, larger and longer hands and fingers, nails of greater length, bigger head, extra large knuckles, those ears and eyes ...........It's spot on already Fantastic, and with more of your tender loving care I just cannot wait to see this masterpiece in it's final incarnation. I am happy you agree with some of my thoughts. I think he could be a real nice "Mascot" for your site,in fact I know he could be.That would be a nice idea. Well just another thought.
Oh and I love the idea of him running on all fours..... the extra large long arms hands fingers will go great with that thought.Somtimes too I think when he is just at rest I can picture him leaning back on those extra long arms and hands with the hands bent backwards knuckles facing down towards the ground.Yes that's a sweet idea,it's going to be great.
I will keep an eye out for it in the WIp section and your site.Just keep :wip: ..........It's Wonderful already, and with even more time and care it will be really great to see.keep up the fantastic creation of this wonderful character.
