View Full Version : Serious noob help with bones and character rigging
vortexrage 06-12-2006, 07:05 PM I can't seem to work out how to do a proper bone structure and rigging of this character (picture below) and i only have one day left tops to do it.
I'm not looking for something fancy as i only have 1 more day to do it, just the easiest and less time consuming way to do it, any ideas or really basic tutorials?... i stress out basic as i'm about to colapse :)
The character will be sat down, then get up, walk and run all in little over a minute.
I'll attach a picture of the setup so you'll get a better notion of what i would require.

I guess that I'll play the bad guy and say it first:
3D CG CA is not simple. If you are really a serious noob, a panicky day to complete a rig is seriously optimistic. :)
Try out 3D Kiwi's site (http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/index.php?)under tutorials.

bit more than you can chew eh. Rather than axking what you need or trying to explainanythign abotu rigging I'l have to follow the bad guy act and say your screwed if your going to do it yourself.
I guess the best I could say is how much can you afford? theres probably a few people here who could rig that guy in an hour or two (assuming he's skinned, if not possibly a little longer.)
Also do you have any of Cactus Dan's tools or are you going to need soemone who can rig with MOCCA?

Check out the tutorials section over at C4Dcafe.com. ChrisHollins has done a couple about basic claude bonet weighting and basic Mocca rigging.
You should find them very useful and they will get you up and running quite quickly, You might have a sleepless night if you only have a day to complete it, but you should be get it sorted from these tutorials..
Then it's all down to your rendering time.. :)

Thank you all for your help!
And Lucent, your not being the bad guy at all... i knew what i was getting into, and i kinda asked so I could here it from you guys that i was pretty much done for as failing to do the rigging was always on my mind.
Anyway I've been doing everything the sets and character for 3 weeks non stop now and I'm pretty happy with how far i came in 3 weeks of 3d in cinema 4d, regarding modelling, lighting, scene creation, etc... although i truly am kinda lost in the claud bonet bid and the actual rigging. It's not that i need to rig it, as i have a back up animation to fall on to, it's just that i planed to (and probably will get a grade deduction for not doind so) and i really hate to not follow a plan through.
Anyway, I do not have cactus dan's tools or any other plugin and I've had my mind set on doing the alternative animation, which i can probably do within the time i have left and render.
I will go back on the subject and read a bit more I'm currently bitting on the maxon mime tutorial, but I'll probably take a week or so off as i feel like mush.
Again thanks to you all...

Hi
To get those weights just right so that the deformations are good, you've gotta have hair on your teeth. :) That's why I prefer to pay someone to get the rigging done :)
...But seeing that this is for, what looks to me like, a class project, you'll have to do it yourself. You have got to get Weightlifter Pro (http://www.vreel-3d.de/plugins/WeightLifter/links.html) from Vreel (http://www.vreel-3d.de). It will help you tremendously. There's also some good video tuts on the site on how to use it.

hey Uncle-Ox
Indeed i was just growing a few by now... and i found out that plugin about an hour ago or so... not too sure if I have time to use it though. I re-made the storyboard so thew character won't have to actual be moving, so it'll be ok i guess, and i'll try again another time :)
Tks for the input!

one quick advice regarding your hierarchy and CB:
group all Meshes in Null, then put this Null (Meshgroup) inside a Hypernurb.put your bone skeleton under the M4eshgroup-Null inside the HN.
Adjust HN subdivision with Hypernurb-tags (insted of multiple Hns)
Then weight the whole thing with claude Bonnet in a single sweep.
