View Full Version : Vehicle: radio controlled car
Daveaustin 01-12-2003, 06:08 PM well.. i've only just started back on this project a short while ago, it tends to come in fits and starts, but i thought i might as well get it lookin reasonable so it can go in my showreel..
modeled in Xsi 3, with FG and 2 area lights, on an AMD1900 1GB RAM, GF4 ti
forgot to count the polys  but it's not meant for any ingame work, initially it was a final year Photoreal uni project... comped onto video footage, but the model's changed somewhat.. as my experience has increased
hope you enjoy it, C&C welcome as always

looks like its just you m8....
the only comment I have is that the scene seems a little too "bright", and the lighting needs some work.

Thanks guys...
Sprog - i'll check the lighting out  i also fiddled with it somewhat in Photoshop, so i think that's what it is... [nudged the contrast up a bit]
the back wheels.. i think i'm gonna change.. not too keen on the gold 'alloy' style.. so check back for some updates... diff angles without overlayed wireframe
Mod's it's not a WIP... just minor details could be changed

W00t!! If it isn't Mr Rack. :D Not seen you around here before.
Front wheels seem a bit 'plasticy' and the texture on the body seems a bit fuzzy.
But overall, I'd have to say it's about spot on
Drop by and chat with us in IRC, man.

Hey Phil!! good to hear from you mate... yeh i don't usually post things on here... most of my efforts appear in the WIP section
watcha been up to!? well thanks for those crits buddy...
i think i can answer em, the wheels are supposed to look 'plasticy', cos it's a toy car  but i'm gonna add some textures to them.. a bit of dust maybe and scratches
and i used the basic DOF which isn't set up properly yet.. so that's y the textures are kinda blurry.. also the fact that i superimposed the w.f. prob didn't help matters..
i'm gonna post a better version of it later today
cheers

here's a better pic..
i've changed the lighting and elements of the car [wheels]. the DOF has also gone.. didn't do the image any favours.. so here it is in raw detail :)

Cheeers Phil!
is there anything else you would change? [i wanna add some more specular on the tires]
Thoughts people?
Hmmm... The second picture looks better but the size of the car means that the intricate detail on the stickers just looks like noise now. Can't you give us a version of the second picture that is cropped upto the car? We don't need to see that much of the tiled lino floor :p
As for the image itself - I know the floor is dirty but I think there would still be a reflection on the floor.
I would also choose a different colour for the body - lime green, bright orange something like that and then make the stickers a different colour.
Maybe even think of making the shell translucent if you have detail underneath?
And talking of stickers - don't make their placement 100% accurate. Skew them a bit and put some ripples in there.
Your aerial is also too perfect. Put a few subtle kinks and changes of direction in it.
The shadows also look a 'little' too hard. I would imagine they would be a bit softer.
But overall it's looking good.

thanks Bliz
some good comments there.. you've given me some fresh new ideas.. i was beginning to struggle,
for some reason the psd of the car body has disappeared... so in order to change all that, i'm gonna have to make a new texture.. shouldn't take long though
i did try puttin some reflection on the tiled floor, but it didn't look right.. and after lookin at the original floor [my utility room] that didn't have em either... it's too scratched, they've been there since the 50's!
i've changed the lighting so that it's placed under a couple of strip lights, personally i prefer the lights like this

i'll get to work on those changes you suggested Bliz..
thanks people

Lowering the camera in relation to the subject is a basic but effective technique that I think you've put to really good use.
Also, I think the colour you've chosen was a good move, makes it seem more vibrant.
If I could change one thing, I think the aerial is still ever so slightly too chunky.
Daveaustin
01-17-2003, 04:19 PM
.. cheers!
well the aerial thing.. the original version, was a very thin 'pingy' wire [if you know what i mean]
but i wanted to make it a chunkier style.. like the pro radio control cars.. the thick casing with a thin wire poking out the top..
I think i need to make it either one or the other.. cos at the mo it's in the middle of the two styles
i'll have a mess around, cheers for the crit
PS i'm also going to modify the front 'wedge' cos it seems to thin at the mo [think i might put some ribbing along the top/bottom]
any ideas?

I would say, remember that a big part of photorealism is perception. You're as (if not more) likely to get away with something if it looks right than if it's actually accurate.
So, because most people have experience of the cheapo pingy (I know exactly what you meant ;) ) aerial type on argos store bought models, the thicker pro type looks wrong to them (ie me).
As for the front fender, maybe put a couple of ridges in there, 'dividing' it into three sections.

cheers! will do Phil... I'll keep you posted!
doin a render as we speak!

looks nice, however the tires are good and scuffed up, however the rest of the car is perfect without a scratch on it.
At the least the front bumper should have some nicks in it.
Great job overall.
The colour is an improvement.
As for the aerial, maybe the cheaper type you get that is a thin piece of black wire threaded through a semi-opaque plastic sleeve might look good?
The edges of the spokes that make up the wheels seem a little bit too sharp. Maybe they could do with a micro-bevel on them to make them more natural? At the moment they are sharp as razor blades!!!:D

Real nice work Dave. The last render looks the best, I don't think it needs the checkered floor.
You just use Softimage XSI for this?
Sweet man.

Thanks everyone for the replies..
Stephen.. i haven't really had much more time to work on the body of the car..
but i've modeled the controller [will be uploading a pic soon]
Bliz + Sonix.. thanks for the comments  as for the aerial.. i've put the old one back on [the one that was in the orig pictures, at the start of the thread]
i'll also have a look at the spokes, Bliz... i see what you mean about the 'crisp' edges, i probably wouldn't have noticed
Sonix, yep it's all Xsi V3..
the renders do take quite a while, i'm using Final Gathering and 2 very large area lights [simulating strip lights] a friend of mine commented that the blue body of the car appears to be using HDRI, but i think that was a lucky fluke with the reflections [it's only a Phong material, modified]
watch out for an update later today
Thanks
Daveaustin

ok well here it is.... what should be the final final render
i decided to model the controller for the car... so there was more to see in the image...
what does everyone think?

and the combi shot..

:deal: WOW.
Only one more thing, shouldn't even say it really, maybe the arial should be darker in colour so you can see it above the car. I think I can just see the plastic cap on the end at the top of the image but I'm not sure. Nothing else wrong at all.
Excellent update Dave.

thanks Sonix,
yeh i'd noticed that as well [the aerial thing] it's got the wrong material on it.. not hard to change, but i didn't want to scrap that render, it's fixed now, i just haven't uploaded a new pic
i don't think i'm gonna spend much more time on this, more pressing things to be working on.. basically a short film!
I did this to fit into the company showreel + website [which is being re-designed at pres, but feel free to visit the film site:p]
thanks to everyone who has commented on this project, it has boosted my confidence in modeling no end  :applause:

When are we going to see In The Dead of Night then?
(And are you guys looking for any help on the site? I'd work for free on a project like that ;))

Hey Phil!!
well we're working on the film at the mo, i'm just doin this as a sideline, to build up the portfolio...
thanks for the offer of doin the site... but i think we'll be able to manage, we've got a mate doin the company site at the mo [doin it in php]
and the film site is pretty much finished [design wise] we'll be updating it as we go along
actually our film trailer is getting a premiere screening at the UGC cinema in Middlesbrough at the ANIMEX animation festival next week [shameless plug  ]
so we're all looking forward to seeing it up on the big screen :buttrock:
the trailer should be on the site pretty soon, when we start advertising that is
so keep an eye out for it
