View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character/Environment - Faeroon
Faeroon 01-12-2003, 06:06 PM Hi all :)
First I didn't want to participate in this challenge, but after talking to Dunadan I just HAD
to pop in the standart posting and make clear the character that I'm after :)
My entry for the challenge will be the race of Yesh'tar – the frost kin.
http://web336.basicbox2.server-home.net/faeroon/challenge1_03/yeshtar-sketch.jpg
And at last here's my little part of the story – I would write more, but this should be ok for now :)
“The hosts of Fingolfin passed the Helcaraxë, but many friends they lost in the icy mists,
the cracking canyons of razorsharp ice spears and treacherous unknown roads on which
they traveled, but they were not going unseen. The Yesh'tar were a race of unknown
creatures, friendly to those who respect their realms and as the end of Fingolfin and all
his kin draw nigh, they overcome their rules and showed themselves to the great host
that wandered through the neverending winter. Fast all the Noldor where gathered and
they followed Eshthot, the leader of the Yesh'tar to the caverns of Luniec'shor, where
all man and women could rest their weary limbs. Soon new hope had risen and after
a whole time of two weeks there was a sad but nonetheless merry parting of the Noldor from the
realm of the Yesh'tar. Sadly none of the frost kin ever heard any news from Endor,
because they all wandered off into forgotten regions of the northern world and just as the Noldor
forgot them, they forgot themselves and no legend and tale of old will tell anything of the
great and proud race which saved the kin of Fingolfin in the hours of their near doom.”
Ok, hope you like it :)
I can't start working on it right away – haven't got my Maya4.5 to run under Linux yet. :(
Nonetheless – I will model this thing, if for the end of the challenge or for my own, after the
challenge has ended :)
Good luck to all the participants :)
PS: YES! I KNOW! I can't draw and the sketch is UGLY as hell.
Draw it with my good old pencil , scanned it and used my crappy graphic tablet
to redraw / roughly color the thing in Photoshop.
PSS: Sorry for the uber-length of the post, but you said that story is imperitive :p
PSSS: Just to make it clear (have i mentioned that I can't draw?): The blue stuff is ICE

Hehe, thx Remi :)
I hope I can start the modelling soon - at the moment I'm changing linux distros like underwear :surprised:
"We recommend Redhat 7.3 for Maya4.5/Linux"....yeah... what the hell...:annoyed:
RH7.2: didn't work
RH7.3: surprise surprise: NO
RH8: naaah...
Mandrake: nope...
At the moment I'm installing slackware - see what comes up next *G*

Whooohoo! UPDATE UPDATE! :D
Sorry... couldn't hold it :)
After a long time of struggling with Linux and Maya
I've got at last some time to start modelling the Yesh'tar.
Started: yesterday at 4pm
Stopped: yesterday at 10pm
Today: just got time to render it and update my homepage.
Ok - first here's a quick wireframe on shaded view from the
maya viewport and on my homepage ( Frozen Sphere (http://www.Frozen-Sphere.de.vu) )
you can find a full 1024x768 rendering in the WIP section, just to view the shaded model
(even if the topography is not good vissible)
http://web336.basicbox2.server-home.net/faeroon/challenge1_03/wireframe1.jpg
Hope you like it so far - CC and comments welcome
(either here or on my homepage *g*)
*makes himself another coffee and gets back to modelling*
PS: Linux is SO much better than Windows *GGG*

Another update (even if noone reads this *G*) on my
character - this time I finished the big (not so hairy) feet.
Started: yesterday at 8pm
Stopped: yesterday at 11pm
I thought of elephants feet while modelling this - because
the entire leg/feet area of the Yesh'tar consists of ice I tried
to make the legs not to organic and I'm happy with it so far.
After the (unfinished *sad*) beast of burden this is my second
character ever modelled :)

Hope you like my "bigfoot" - CC and comments welcome

I...hate...hands.... :surprised
Honestly...I HATE them....:surprised
Why do even need them... cut them off I say...modelling them is a pain in the a**...
Ok - here's another quick update
(Oops... seems that I've forgotten to put my
thread up on cgchallenge... gonna do that later... )
This is the first time I've ever modelled hands.
I like my first pair of them ;)
http://web336.basicbox2.server-home.net/faeroon/html/images/fullres/wip/beasts/yeshtar-wip3.jpg
Is it just me or does noone want to comment my stuff?
Is it THAT bad? Is it THAT ugly? How can I know what to do better if noone tells me...
Nevermind... I'm doing this thing for me...
More updates to come (even if noone reads them...)

Your model is looking good, Faeroon! Don't worry about people not commenting - there are so many entries in this challenge, I think everyone is having a hard time keeping up with them all! I know I am :)
And those hands look great! Although it would be nice to see a smoothed version of your model thus far *hint*

@Strike:
Thank you :)
@Leigh and pigwater:
As you wish :)
I've never worked much with SubDiv in Maya before, this is just a quick
test how the hands and the overall shape of the Yesh'tar looks.
The legs are now seperated from the upper body, because their made out
of ice and ice isn't smooth - it's sharp, crisp and hard.
Maybe someone can give me a hint - I want to animate this char (never done
any animation before), but with seperate body parts... i don't know..sounds
difficult to me. Maybe there's a way to get ultra-hard edges with SubDiv or
something like that - gonna test that later, but for now it looks good (i think)

PS: Yep..the palm of the hand is not perfect, but it's the best I could
make of it

Here's another little update.
Had to kill my entire system because of some %!?/&$/$ progs...
Now I'm back online and working hard to get the Yesh'tar ready :)
I worked on the chest-area, put a new cloak over his (non-existing)
head, smoothed everything out and even added some nipples... *embarassed*
Don't ask if he's horny (because of the "spicky" nipples)...it's just COLD damnit! :D
I know, got to work on the breast muscles , cloak and etc - its my very first
humanoid character and I'm not THAT good at human anatomy ;)
Click here for the new rendering (http://web336.basicbox2.server-home.net/faeroon/html/images/fullres/wip/beasts/yeshtar-wip5.jpg)

Wow...modelling can be time consuming but whom do I have to tell that? :D
After some days of work-other stuff-work-stuff-stuff-work I've managed to
finish the modelling of the Yesh'tar and imho he's now ready for texturing :)
I've never modelled a character that far (not even the last beast of burden)
and I hope you folks like it as much as I do :)
Cheers and wish me luck (and a BIG pot of coffee) for the UV layout *G*
The Yesh'tar - ready to go and kick some UV's butt *G* (http://web336.basicbox2.server-home.net/faeroon/html/images/fullres/wip/beasts/yeshtar-wip6.jpg)
If someone would like to comment / critic - go on, I would be glad :p

Looking good, man! Very ominous.
I think the pelvis/groin area could use a little touching up.
Nice job!

Here it is, my LotR character :D
After weeks and weeks of tuning the darn UV layout
its finished - nothing more to say.
No fancy icy environment - i don't have any time to
do that now.
Hope you like it and maybe some C&C would be nice :)
Cheers all and good luck with the challenge again.

Hehe thx Master OZ
PS: I know there's much that could be better:
the torso , the whole anatomy stuff,
the lighting, the textures... but it's my first full textured
character and I didn't even think that I could finish him ;)
After all the time I don't want to work any more minutes on
this thing - BE GONE - and that's it *G*

I like the concept and the presentation page... Good work so far.
As far as crit. goes: If possible, it might be cool to see it in some type of more dramatic pose.
Nice work! I like it!
Faeroon
02-25-2003, 12:00 AM
I would like to set him into a more
dramatic, maybe aggressiv pose
but HELL - I've never rigged a character before and it's a bit to late for the challegenge.
Maybe I'll try that later, but sadly I've got no time to work on this guy for the next days..
After all it's good to know that I finished him - that's all I wanted to achieve :D
leigh
02-27-2003, 12:27 AM
That came out nicely
I still think that you could make some minor tweaks here and there, but overall he is looking cool :)
