"The symptoms of this problem first seem to after appear about 2-3 weeks of use of the Macbook. As you can see in the image to the left, most commonly, yellowish-redish spots appear on the plastic where the palm rests, and on the trackpad button. These spots cannot be removed by any cleaning solution, and seem to only get worse over time."

From my own experience I can say that this is not true. At least not within that time frame. I use my MacBook a lot since about two and a half weeks and there are non such symptoms. Maybe just an individual case?

Seriously, I had powerbooks for years (which are prone to the same thing, as is my Dell Im using right now) and the trick is:

GOOD HYGIENE!

I've seen that on most of the iBooks with the white palm rests or with the clear keys. The grey palm rest iBooks so far resist the oil stains. I've also seen on all but grey palm rest iBooks Yellow plastic and the letters on the keys coming off after about 8 months to a year or so. I have an older ibook that has not lost any of the keys or gone yellow. This is with office use which is 8 hrs a day 5 days a week. I have some of the clear key iBooks that even have yellow keys. Nasty to look at. These laptops are used by neat freaks and people that eat at their desk and they still turn colors.

I think it is a material problem. They keep using cheaper and cheaper plastics with each new model. After looking at any iBook and the new macbook there is a stark difference in plastics. I would skip the macbook and go right to the macbook pro which doesn't have any of those problems.

Really sad because I really like the design of the new macbooks. Maybe the next batch of faster machines will have better plastics... I hope.

I have seen this happen to after time to alot of laptops. In this case it looks like a construction worker or something though....

Had the Black Macbook for a couple weeks now and don't have any wierd discoloration issues? Maybe this isn't supposed to apply for the black?

Yellow discoloration caused by sweat, is because the apocrine glands secrete protein molecules into the sweat.

It is the same function that causes yellow marks on shirts, and body odour. This is because various bacteria feed on the protein and hence cause the body odour.

It happens at the palms of the hands, the souls of the feet (hence foot odour), as well as the under arm region.

If you sweat profusely, I suggest you keep those body parts away from plastic components.

For a company with such a small marketshare, Apple sure has a big "news share". I didnt' know there were so many non-Apple users interested in Apple news...

I'd have to agree that this is a hygiene issue. I admit that I've had some discoloration on my MacBook Pro, but because I wipe it clean after using it, it still looks new.

Hmmm, Apple lawyers haven't forced pic removal yet.

I use my Macbook extensively in a busy workshop at a post-production facility and it's not received a scratch, gone yellow, purple or green, mooed or whined, nor has it spontaneously exploded. The thing has been rock solid.

Well....mine did spontaneously explode. Sort of.

White smoke coming out of the keyboard is only good if you're electing a pope.
