View Full Version : Rendering low poly objects with mental ray + final gather?

For me this is tricky. Usually when i render low polygon objects for mesh showcase, i often get tiny black artifacts and something that looks as if the objects has "hard edges" all over even though its smoothed out. Sometimes they are not as obvious but it takes a really long time to tweak the settings for an avarage result.

I have no problem whatsoever with rendering high polygons objects. They all look good.

How do you do it? Tips / Hints? Screengrabs of optimal mental ray settings? :)

Im very thankful for all the help i can get.

I just use a basic skylight, may take a while, but usually gives a decent look.

I use a skylight and one omni with shadows on. It usually gives a fantastic render in a short amount of time. I typically leave GI off and put final gather between 100-700 samples.

sometimes i fake GI with one ray traced omni then duplicate and make shadow map, then duplicate again and give the next a higher sample range. plus i make sure that they all add up to about 1 or sommit add some ambient and hey presto

thanks dude, but hmm, theres a lot of stuff that differs in mental ray and final gather for Max. Some of the tabs dont exist in maya etc... Or they are just called something else.

I know, but for basic ideas on how to do things (skylight), plus with what others have told you here for great stuff on nice wip renders, im sure you could mock up something.. take a day and play with various stuff til you got some methods that work well. Also write down in notepad or whatever the process you do so you don't forget it for later renders ;)
