How would I create the basic bumps for a human skin bumpmap? I used the noise option in photoshop before, but this doesn't look very good.

How do other people do this?

Paint them, there's not too many other ways to do it. It's best if you have really good reference pictures, like the ones found here (http://www.defenselink.mil/photos/People/Portraits/).

Photoshop filters are never a good idea for using in texture maps :p
I usually start off my skin bump maps by using procedurals, and then making those to an image map, and adding details by hand in Photoshop :)

Leigh, you reminded me of something I read about Episode 1 before. They needed to make a rocky terrain for some shot, so they wrote a tool that copied a couple of different rocks a bunch of times at random sizes and rotations. Then, they just went in and removed what they didn't need.

It's sort of related to what you said because you can start with a procedural, and then fix what's either not right or is too repetitive. Sometimes layering two or three can help in any given situation.

Okay, guess I didn't add a whole lot here. But it's a technique one can use. :)
