View Full Version : Faerie Ring - WIP
Feyd-Rautha 06-11-2006, 02:54 PM Trying my hand at something a little different.
I've always been fascinated by faerie rings. What causes mushrooms to grow in circles like this in the woods? (if somebody knows a scientific answer for it - don't tell me)
There are a lot of rumors and beliefs about faerie rings. Some believe that they imbue good luck on anyone stepping into them. Some believe that they are connections or portals to the faerie realm. The idea behind this painting is that this faerie ring exists deep in the forest and over time the faerie have come through and created homes for themselves in the trees surrounding the faerie ring.

Oooh I like this :)
I think all this needs is more contrast in the form of good shadows. This is really cool!

Thanks! :)
Yeah, I still need to add some shadows from the tree trunks. I imagine they would be kinda subtle though, since there isn't alot of direct light under the forest canapy, except where it's streaming through in the center.

An update. I added shadows, clover, and more flowers.

wow that's agreat scene you have so far.
not really anything to critique on it, although it seems like your mushroom shadows would be a bit longer and softer towards the ends, but other than that it's going well

Thanks! I think you're right about the mushroom shadows.

This is all I meant about more contrast:

I just added a brightness/contrast adjustment layer, a curves adjustment layer and a noise layer.

Another update. Actually I think I'm done. I can't think of anything else to do to it at this point. I took your advice Runecaster and bumped up the contrast, though not quite as much as you did. I want it to have a kind of soft welcoming feel to it. I also added some subtle noise, but only to the background where the tree trunks were kind of flat looking.
I also added in leaves hanging down from above, doors in the little doorways, a subtle glow effect on some of the flowers and mushrooms, and finally some little glowing sparkles in the light beams.
And I lengthened and softened the shadows under the mushrooms.

Thanks everyone! :) For the complements and the helpful input on the image. I still may return to the image and poke at it some more at some point in the future, but I've got to work on something else for a while now.
Squibbit: I tried adding window frames at one point but they didn't look quite right. I had tried little grey stone window frames, perhaps I should try wood window frames instead. I do like the idea of plants and flowers under the windows. I'll probably give that a try at some point too.

After some time away I've decided to return to this painting and work on it a little more. I'm converting it to a night time scene. There's something about it right now that doesn't sit right with me though. I'm not sure what it is. Possibly something about the colors that aren't right.
If anyone has any input on this I'd love to hear it. :)

I think it might be the yellow glow from the windows - why I understand why you would want it to be warm, I think it might be a little too warm to mesh with the image -- and too saturated -- maybe a slight cooler yellow or some green in there, or just plain less saturated hue - I dunno, just throwing stuff out there. It's quite evident I haven't a clue what I'm doing so you can completely ignore me :D

Totally awesome, Feyd. I like the night one.
I agree that the yellow lights may be a little bit too bright in comparison with the forrest.

Lovely painting, beautiful atmosphere! The grass could be bolder IMO. I agree with Runecaster about the yellow windows. The composition is very nice! :)

Wow, thanks teal-k, that looks alot better. I think I'm going to have to re-visit my day-time version of this image. Those are some really good improvements.
And thanks to everyone that gave me feedback on the night version. I'm working on a new version for it now. Hopefuly I'll have it up soon.

you're welcome feyd :)
i think there is much space for inproovement yet wether is night time or day light
in the one i posted for example i think the yellow glowing windows are still too bright perhaps you ought desaturate it a little not much then again why would they have the light on during the day? :D
i also would like to see the faries ,where are they ?
keep it up :)

Ok, did another pass on it. I desaturated and toned down the doors and windows. I added dappled shadows on the trees and re-worked the shadows on the ground. I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by bolder grass Dianae, but I took a stab at it. I painted some brighter slightly glossy grass in the foreground, and added some more small grass tufts in the background.

I tweaked some of the shadows and bumped the contrast a little more.

edit: Hmmm... looking at the two versions right next to each other now, I'm starting to think I over-did it with the contrast.

I really like this! The little glowing globs of light hovering near the toadstools are awesome. Much better with the glow - looks great!

that grass looks lovely :)
i'd randomize the shape of the roots ,if you look at it the mushrooms and the tree roots have similar pattern besides dpnt think mushroom have roots do they?
dont be afraid to use photo references :)
