View Full Version : autoRig 2.0 problem

hi, I am running maya 4.5. I just tried to use autoRig 2.0 but it just won't work right.

Must say that I am a newbie, though. Well, no bones appear, just the plain curves.

A good tutorial would be nice since not everybody out there is an expert right from the start.

I think that a bunch of people would really appreciate it if an animation artist would do an autoRig tutorial (video tutorial would be sure best).

Thanks for your help guys

I didn't know Mark had put 2.0 out. Thanks for the post :)

I did manage to get it to work, but there's multiple error messages, and yes, it isn't working right. Hopefully Mark - or another Mel master - will clean it up. 2.0 looks promising :thumbsup:

Hello,

I had the same problem, but now, I can say that the script works fine.

You need source it twice.

Hope It helps you.

How exactly does this script work? Do you have to create a skeleton for your character first or what?

Why didn't this guy make some kind of manual--atleast something to show how to use it. :rolleyes: :shame:

Pretty simple really, once you get past the odd have-to-source-the script twice problem :hmm:

Try it without a mesh just to see how it works. First (after sourcing the script twice, and calling up the UI) just leave everything at the default settings and press the BUILD GUIDES button to build the left half curves (guides) for the skeleton. Then, adjust the CV's on the curves to your liking (to fit your mesh, if you had one) then press the BUILD RIG button and watch the script do it's magic. When it's finished, if you'd like to adjust the scale of any of the controls, just select them and hit one of those percentage buttons.

As to the lack of a manual, I'm just grateful to Mark for authoring this script, and offering it publicly too :) If he spends any more time on it, I'd like to see it spent tracking down the odd quirks and further improving it.

Um, I just get errors:

// Error: jsConstObjCustom ($clusters[2],{$hipsCTRL,$shoulderCTRL});
//
// Error: An array expression element must be a scalar value. //
// Error: arPickWalkAuthor ({$hipsCTRL,$shoulderCTRL});
//
// Error: An array expression element must be a scalar value. //
// Error: return {$hipsCTRL, $shoulderCTRL};
//
// Error: An array expression element must be a scalar value. //
// Error: }
//
// Error: Procedure is missing a return statement. //

It looks like this guy needs to squash the bugs to make it usable. :-)

Hmm...haven't run across those errors, but I have run across others. Still, I've succesfully built a rig with it - on Maya 4.5 W2k.

But here's hoping there's a bug-squashing update soon ;)

I can't get it to do anything. It just gives me those errors and does nothing.

Don't know why CIM. You're right, I get the same error message you do, BUT - if you quit Maya, fully source the script TWICE, then try following that little example I wrote it should work.

And I just sent an email off to the author. Hopefully he'll take a look and fix it soon.

The script is just bad. I Source twice and nothing happens at all. I get the error on the first Source, and that's all. :rolleyes:

Well, I don't get it. It's weird to have to source it twice, but it does work after that.

Anyway, Mark's already written me back and he's working on it.

Cool. Hopefully he'll get a working version out soon.

Mark just posted 2.01. It fixes a little bug I found with deleting fingers. He's still working on the sourcing-twice thing.

But for anyone that still can't get it to work, try this:

First of all, make sure you've got the script in the default directory for scripts. Source the script (the long way) directly in the Script Editor. File-->Source Script...and then (obviously) select the autoRig.mel file to source it. Then repeat this step (i.e, source the script again - via the Script Editor!) Only after sourcing the script like this twice, just run the script from the command line (type: autoRig.)

If that doesn't do it for ya...sorry. I swear this is working for me, with 4.5 under W2k!!

I got the same specs as you do, and what you recomended worked for me. But i have to go thru the same procedure everytime I open maya. is it the same for you?

Yep, you've got to do it each time you open Maya. But considering the time saved building a rig from scratch...:)

Glad to hear it's working for you.
