View Full Version : 20" Widescreen or NOT?
ranbby 06-11-2006, 08:00 AM Hi guys, I am considering to purchase a 20"TFT monitor for mostly graphics design using Maya or 3Dmax. Which format of TFT is better to work with? hope you can give us some advises by choosing a comfortable monitor. thanks.

I think 20" is too small to go widescreen. I'd choose either a normal 20" or a widescreen 24".

I have a 20" widescreen and I love it. These days I primarily use it for photo work so that wide perspective is nice (unless the photo is in a portrait orientation). I also use it with Max sometimes as well.
A friend of mine has a 24" which is REALLY nice, but also quite a bit more expensive. If I had the money I would splurge and get the 24" (or maybe 30"). As it is, I spend most of my money and pricey camera gear so for me 20 was a good compromise. I prefer the wide orientation. I just feels like a better use of space. Entirely subjective, I know.
Another thing to keep in mind that most 20" WS monitors are 1680x1050, meaning that a monitor with 1600x1200 has a greater resolution.

I just got myself a 23" HP monitor, and I'm loving it. Lots of space to work with.

While a bit pricey, the 24" is amazing!! I just got it a couple weeks ago - at 1920x1200, the resolution is similar to two 19 inchers side by side. It's a gorgeous monitor!! I practically have to turn my head when looking from one side of the screen to the other....

20inch better not wide... I just buy a 2007 dell (not widescreen) and its limit ok... widescreen will be too short.
im sad there is no 24inch non-widescreen...
haaa...some day Ill get a 30inch!

Which type of screen can we better manage the space or can we have relatively more space to work with? Is the surface of the rectangle one(WS) bigger than the square ones in 20"?
I think the Widescreen is too short and very wide, it's 16:10.
Can we use the viewport of 3D-programs more efficiently than 4:3? or at least the same?
Personally, I would like to buy a 20"WS as well, but don't know if it's as good as 4:3 Screens.
thanks for further explanations.

Widescreen is many times over better to work on. The aspect ratio is the golden ratio which is the most pleasing to the human eye, and it has the perfect amount of space for a large viewport with toolbars on both sides. Sure a 20" normal monitor has a few more overall pixels, but you would be hard pressed to use them as effectively, and the proportions suck.
You also get a much longer timeline in video and audio editing apps on a widescreen which is great, at least for me it is. Personally, I would always go for the widescreen. All the monitors at school are standard, non-wide screen between 19" and 21". There's ALWAYS empty space in photoshop because the images and toolbars never fit quite right, and I like being able to work with images side-by-side, which is easier to do on a widescreen display.
But who knows eh?

I don't understand how anyone can say widescreen is smaller than regular!! It's math!! The size is measure by the diagnal - the hypotinuse (sp?) - so the area is the same exact for both ws and 4:3.
I think ws is better because you can layout panels more effectively.I've never used 20" ws, though, so maybe it's too short to be preferable.

i do agree - ws is the way to go!
tevih, they dont mean smaller size, they mean smaller surface!
Imagine a 1:20 ratio monitor (20" diagonal) ! the surface is about 1 x 20 inch = 20 inch^2
Now imagine a 3:4 ratio monitor with the same 20" diagonal ! the surface is 12 x 16 inch = 192 inch^2
understand?

Sorry, I have wrongly expressed my point. I do mean the surface is smaller, not the diagonal size. You're right. thx

Thanks for your nice explanation. That's what I needed it. I think I'm going for a widescreen in the future. Although it has maybe fewer pixels, but the widescreen is effective (0.618 ratio, Da Vinci's perfection of ratio, hahaha) as so far what I've heard so we will work efficiently:)

Err I wouldn't buy a 20" monitor if I wasn't able to afford a 16" with it too lol.
Think about lan parties, hehe.

20" widescreen will give you a rather small picture height, if you're going with 20" get a standard picture ratio. A standard 20" LCD will give you a 1600x1200 working resolution, which is nice.

sure, but all the programs never fit right in standard screens, there is always a waste of space, you won't manage the toolbars as nice as widescreens. Widescreen may be alittle short, but you will work efficiently with it, it also gives you a nice visual experience while either using 3d apps, gaming or watching a movie.
I mean it's finally a personal taste, it all depends how you like your viewport to be.

I have nothing against widescreens, I'm merely saying that you need a larger then 20" widescreen to really benefit from the different picture ratio.
[QUOTE=ranbby]...it also gives you a nice visual experience while either using 3d apps, gaming or watching a movie. /QUOTE]
As far as games are concerned, a standard monitor is a better all-around choice. Not all games support widescreen resolutions, in which event you'll have a black area to the left and right of the pic, or a stretched picture. In addition, I worked on a large 24" wide display, now I'm working on a dual 19" standard screens setup and I find the dual monitors setup a bit more effective. Personal preference? Perhaps.
