View Full Version : Need help building a new computer.
Panzeroth 06-11-2006, 07:42 AM Yeah basically I need a new computer in about a month time for when I return to my beloved home country and am in desperate need of some inputs because I lost track of this business years ago. I'm gonna get the DELL 2407 (24 inch widescreen) because I read some good reviews on it and I need a computer that can run Unreal Tournament smoothly on that screen. It might sound like a silly goal but I'm gonna focus a lot on creating a mod that I and a friend are planning hopefully leading me from running around in the desert with guns to a safer job making games and drinking beer and all that great stuff. Since I see it as an investment for a future job I don't really have a problem spending a larger amount of money on it either. I'm an experienced 3dsmax user and have recently gotten my hands on Zbrush 2 which by the way is an excelent tool but my laptop died and lets just say Afghanistan doesn't have that great tech support.
Some friends adviced me to get a 64 bit processor (dual?) because apparently someone told them that was the best. Sure ok. I'm also thinking about getting a 1gig graphics card along the lines of the EN7950GX2/2PHT/1G, as well as 4 gigs of whichever RAM.
If it isn't obvious already, I need a couple guidelines.
Anyone up for the challenge? :D Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
-Knut

Just an FYI
1) Most CPUs these days ARE 64bit, there's really no choice when it comes to buying 64bit or not (hardware wise). You can run 32bit OS and apps on a 64bit CPU just fine, as well.
What I expect your friends were talking about was the Athlon64. Which is a great CPU.
2) There are no 1GB graphics cards in the gamer/enthusiast/end user market. The Nvidia Geforce 7950 GX2 may say 1GB, but in actuality, it is two Geforce 7900GTs (with a higher clock speed and more RAM) stuck side by side to one another. Each card having 512MB of RAM. So yes, the unit as a whole does have 1GB, but each card only has 512 for its use. 512 is still quite a bit. This card is also pretty expencive, so I'd recommend a 7900GT, as that is roughly half the price, and performs quite respectably.
I have a Dell 2405 (very similar to the 07) and can run most any game I choose at good resolution and detail without much trouble on my Geforce 7800GT.

Thanks a lot...s (Harr harr pun)
Ok so we're getting an AMD 64 bit then, check.
Since the graphics card is really "just" 2 slapped into one, does that have less effect than a potential 1 gig one? Since a 512 is half the price, and has half the amount of RAM, wouldn't it just be the same thing to get it instead of 2 graphics cards? I want a computer that lasts a couple years without having to upgrade every week or play next month's games on the lowest settings, and I've been looking around on some webshops that offer pre-built gaming computers and they got 2 cards.
An online friend reccommened the DELL as he also got the 2405 and it's good to see that more people are happy with it, I'm definately going for the 2407.

If game performance is your #1 concern, then you should get a single core CPU and save yourself some $. If you're planning on doing any jobs that include a lot of rendering, you should get a dual core CPU. And if I were you, I'd be getting AM2 board and CPU and combine it with DDR2.

Well I should rephrase myself, my main concern is both. I intend to get a computer that is overall performing good on both areas and lasts a while. As I said money isn't really an issue, well, as long as it doesn't exceed ~4-5.000$.
Basically what I need is a list of components that work together, I've been looking around at some on different websites and I'm more confused now than what I was earlier.

Here's my config, bought it recently, maybe you'll find it helpful:
CPU: AMD X2/64 4800+
MBO: MSI K8N Neo4 Fi (nforce4)
RAM: 2x1 Gb
HDDs: 1 WD Raptor 74 Gb (SATA) and 1 Hitachi Deskstar 250 Gb
GFX: Leadtek 7900 GT 256 mb
PSU: Enermax Liberty 500W
Works great in max and 2d packages (Adobe CS2 etc.) and it works great with any new game. I also expect it to last a while...
Well as long as money isnt a concern :)
I would wait for the Socket F Opteron boards to start showing up. I'd buy the next revision of the Tyan Thunder K8WE (socket F). It should have the pro version of the latest Nforce 500 series. Next, I'd get 4 or more gigs of RAM (DDR2 of course). And I'd get that Geforce 7950 GX2. Though, keep in mind that because the GX2 is two cards working in SLI, all the benifits, and draw backs that come with SLI, will come with this card. Which may or may not be a good thing for your 3D app of choice, but will be excellent for all those modern games you want to play.
To top it all off, the new Socket F Tyan board should also support SLI. And once Nvidia decides that the GX2 can be SLI'd by your every day end user, you can drop another GX2 into your system for some quad SLI action.
And then in a year or two, when K8L is out, I'd swap my CPUs for a K8L :). K8L being the next step in the K8 evolution (Opteron/Athlon/etc.). And it has 4 cores :). 8 cores of rendering good-ness is all i can say :P
Though, from the sounds of it, you'll need a pretty heafty PSU :)
Fun times.

So have you thought about the looking into say boxx for info on what they are building and match them. you know www.boxxtech.com (http://www.boxxtech.com). I still say bad mofo workstation and then build atleast one rendernode.

Actually.. the Quadro FX 5500 has 1 gig DDR.. but it would eat up over half of his $4000 to $5000 budget

Don't tease me. I am just one more bet to being able to buy that card. Seriously you would have to be making some serious cash to need a 1gig ram vid card.
