View Full Version : Dual-Core Xeon codenamed Dempsey
samsoe 06-10-2006, 11:23 PM Hi, anyone tried these new turbo-monsters yet? Maybe some render tests etc?

On 23 May 2006, Intel released the Dual-Core Xeon codenamed Dempsey. Released as the Dual-Core Xeon 5000-series, Dempsey is a NetBurst processor built on a 65 nm process, and is virtually identical to Intel's "Presler" Pentium Extreme Edition, except for SMP support, which lets Dempsey operate in dual-processor systems. Dempsey ranges between 2.67 and 3.73 GHz (model numbers 5030-5080). Some models have a 667 MT/s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MT/s) FSB, and others have a 1066 MT/s FSB. Dempsey has 4 MiB of L2 Cache (2 MiB per core). A Medium Voltage model, at 3.2 GHz and 1066 MT/s FSB (model number 5063), has also been released. Dempsey also introduces a new interface for Xeon processors: Socket J (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_J), also known as LGA 771 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_771).

Personally I'd get the Opterons over that...

that CPU has nothing on Opteron.
The Xeons that come out based on Core 2 Duo may have a different standing.. but really there's little anything based on Netburst can do compared to AMD's K8.
And until the Core 2 based Xeons come out, we wont have any solid numbers on exactly where they stand in comparison to Opteron. So its best to wait and see..

Ok, but have you guys/gals seen the price for these new processors..? Below 160 bucks for a DualCore Xeon (5030, 2.67ghz). Im thinking about getting a new machine with two of these babies inside. It could be a cheap way of building a new renderfarm.., - if they start to crank out some cheap motherboards too.
Any thought on how to get more power at less cost?
Kind regards,

Intel wants to sell off its crappy Netburst(bust) CPUs to make way for conrore and its derivatives. So they're playing the price slashing game.
I would hold off just a little longer though, rumor has it that AMD may be cutting prices by up to 50% as well. And if you can score an Opteron 270 or 275 for half what it cost now, well that would be the preferable choice, at this point.

They really are not new. And at 160.00 it's what is known as a "fire sale".
Rather funny when you consider that those Xeons generate enough heat to start a fire.

opteron price cuts: from an AMD dealer over @ 2cpu ~
"you may see some tapering in late july/August, but don't hold your breath."
are there any rumors other than this floating around out there? A 50% cut for 2xx dual core opterons would great... could we expect cuts in the dual 940 mobos as well?
