View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - Creature - 3ddy
eddy-3ddy 01-12-2003, 11:30 AM Here a creature that is with many. It lives in the rivers of Anduin, and with his "team" he can chance the rivers course. It can move quickly, It can talk to other stones, in a old ent language. They are friendly creatures and are sometimes funny.

I like the idea....can't decipher much from the concept sketch although it does look pretty cool....looking forward to seeing your progress...happy contesting...

me neither, I was busy with the eyes, but my girlfriend asked me to leave the computer...
He will get a mouth and some teeth and some eyes, nose and maybe hands, too throw his or her children (I think that's a tiny funny thing)
About the name I'm not quite sure, It will be a simple name, also like ent, "the older names or the most simplistiest names" like bullrog, the new names are more exotic names.

01-12-2003, 07:55 PM
oke, here a next update. I'm not quite happy about it, but I will buggle that up in 3d.
Some hand on his back added, eyes and a mouth. The next update will be in 3d...

Great concept 3ddy!! (damn i have seen his real face:p)
Can't wait too see the model, i think it will be a cute character, or am wrong?
Good luck with the challence!

Yo thanks for the replies, 3dhypers are on the move:bounce:
It's gonna be a damn cute character, I hope I can create that...
To Scorpes: I'm sorry, I will cover up my face next time with our meeting of 3dhype.com
It's more difficult then I thought. Create some rock that looks like rock and also a face with hands. But I will try...:wip:
GOOD IDEA! Im very curious about the syle.....will be realistic or cartoon like?
eddy-3ddy
01-15-2003, 08:46 AM
-OZ-: My idea was too make it very realistic. I hope that's gona happen.

Let's see some polygons 3ddy!! :p
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 03:06 PM
Some changes are made in the concept:
The first thing I remembered was that river stones are mostly round through the splashing water. (It's also easier to model  )
Here just the mouth and chin. There will be a nose and arms etc.
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 05:50 PM
A next one, this one has more personality.
Joril: here are your polies
Nibo: And a little bit soft inside
UHM, the stone is styl simetric, but that will change after a while

Just wondering, if its stone and its underwater does he need a nose? It didn't occur to me that he would actually need to breathe. That is the reason I was asking. Just a thought.
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 06:31 PM
throw a fish on land, does it breath? My createre, is a land and water creature, they live in the river area, at the side of the river or in the river.
It may have been a great idea to create some fish breathing tools (I don't know how you caal that in english, but I hope it's clear), I have to think about that...
Personaly I like a nose on a creature, it's gives him more personality, but oke, it's just peronal
Thanks
BlueCougar
01-17-2003, 06:37 PM
Cool, I like the nose as well, and gills would be pretty neat on him. Is he made of stone or does he just look like it?
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 06:42 PM
gills What is that?
He is made of stone, flexible stone... but hard.:argh:
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 07:21 PM
Another update. This is just a test with texutering... I always do, I don't now why..
eddy-3ddy
01-17-2003, 08:02 PM
here some arms, the hands will be big...
eddy-3ddy

01-18-2003, 03:06 PM
Added some green eyes
Robbert
01-19-2003, 12:25 PM
Looks good sofar, i think you have too add some scratches, dust and more collors... too make it realistic stone.
Keep posting!

You can also use displacement mapping for more rougness and variation.

love the concept, love the face,
big mouth and quiet eyes... kind of "i can smash you whenever i want"
only crits on the "shoulders" try to blend the arms with the body!
really cool model anyway!
eddy-3ddy
01-20-2003, 01:26 PM
Joril: Thx joril, I thought I was original...:surprised
The only thing that's different is that my creature gets some feet.
dies-irae: Thx for loving it, and maybe you're right on those arms, but I did it more on purpose. It's easy texturing. If you know an other way...
Thanx for replieng you all:thumbsup:
toxichimp
01-20-2003, 02:09 PM
kewl!
I dunno why, but I think he should have a tail. A small, stumb one just to keep his balance :p
eddy-3ddy
01-20-2003, 03:56 PM
Toxichimp > Zo de jus, jij leeft ook nog?
Yeah, maybe a good idea to make a tale, I will think about it
eddy-3ddy
01-20-2003, 07:09 PM
What do you think about the hands?
These are just a try for matching with the body...
eddy-3ddy

01-20-2003, 07:19 PM
Question for this, anyone know how to texture this creature?
eddy-3ddy
01-20-2003, 08:19 PM
Some corrections for the thumb

Joril
01-20-2003, 08:24 PM
The thumb looks alot better than before.
However, I think you should still use the "stone" theme some more. The nails could be more original. like pebbles lying on the fingers or something.
And maybe the joints of his limbs should be a bit bulkier. They look very smooth now. like rock that's been lying in a stream of water for a very, very long time.
Iguiniz.X.
01-20-2003, 10:58 PM
There is Little to crit, except the hand. :p
You have to place the tumb lower on the palm or make the palm higher... check the image I've sent you... hard to tell cos I c it at an angle.
Then I only could give some ideas....
A certain amouth of asymetric in the arms, head and hands would give him a cooler look.....
upcoming feets? or does he walk on his hands?
It might be my taste of style but I wouldn't give him the red head... A rougher stone texture with a bit more bump would do the better I think. Or a big (schelp) Shell cool also look niice... a chell in a special form which would function as armor.
Hope it helps a bit, and get the progress going.:wavey:
eddy-3ddy
01-20-2003, 11:02 PM
IguinizX > Super, cool idea iguinizX. "Give him shells as armor." He will have feet, never build it before, even the hands here are my first hands.
Joril > Yeah, that's also a cool thing. I will add it all.

Ayreon
01-21-2003, 11:06 PM
Hey 3ddy!
That's a very nice creature you've come up with. It has personality. I read somewhere that you liked a nose on the creature, it gives him personality. I agree, but I think the nose is to human like. Maybe just a little modification to make it more fitting. But that's just my opinion.
Oh, one more thing, I think his toe nails could be raised just a little bit.
Are you going to give him some hair? Not fur like, but just some strands or something? Would be nice I think. think of golum, he has a few of those lose strands hanging of his head. Those kind of thinks can really put detail into a model.
Looking forward to seeing your progress. I'll keep my eye on this one :D
Ayreon
PS: LOVE THE HANDS!!
Fetus23
01-22-2003, 01:02 AM
What a funny little fellow......good stuff 3ddy!..the hands are very nice. So do these guys hide in tall grass? Just waiting for an unsuspecting foot to come along... :)
lets see some more ..:wip: :wip:

Ayreon > Thx man, Yeah I give him hair and so on, some grass maybe.
Fetus23 > There everywhere you can find the river Anduin. Hide in tall grass, in the river and so on:rolleyes: Thx that you like my creature. Tonight I will be busy to do some changes and more detail. Texturing will be difficult. I hope that it will look nice with that.
Robbert
01-22-2003, 06:31 PM
COOL, the character is become too life ;)
But i agree with the nails, I think you should give him claws.
So he can growl hisself trough the rocks and sand. :bounce:
Dreamwave
01-22-2003, 06:45 PM
wow, those creatures look very inmobile...:p
I like it, but I would make the eyes darker/greyer
the texture test looked very good
eddy-3ddy
01-22-2003, 07:49 PM
Yoooo
Thx for those replies!!!
Robbert > what do you mean with claws?? Biggerstuff or just lika a raptor, that he can rip flesh apart. Still in remembrance of that he a nice kind little creatur is that's not bigger than 5 litre fust of beer. 25 cm wide and 20 cm high. But maybe it can be sweet claws, I will test some of it
Dreamwave > Did you saw any stones walk before? There not fast oke, god didn't give any "handy" legs and so. But when they want to move fast, they use there arms. Kinda solution to the problem...
But the eyes is maybe a good idea, but doesn't it give it a grey image, because the stone is also grey and little brown... Darker would be the solution, I will make some examples...
PS for Dreamwave > I have just one creature. (oke, dit is mierengeneuk ;-) )
I will add some more displacement at his back. Hope that gonna be good.

but definately some alternative anatomy :buttrock:

those hands rock man! :buttrock:
for the feet: the nails were better on the hands. but i like the way he "stands" on his feet!

Few, finally...
dies-irae > I'm happy to hear that you love the way he is. Oke the nails and so are on my toDo list.

Oh, about the hands, maybe you all are interested in wireframes, I can post it...

3ddy,
Keep the original eye. It's very lively, and fits the character more then the blue one's, imho.

a pose, texture, and some new adds, like more shoulders...
Ayreon
01-24-2003, 06:27 AM
Don't know if I'm to crazy about the new shoulderpads. How will they be connected to his body?
I like the texturing so far, but maybe put a bit more brown into the textures, a bit more dirty. Otherwise it's coming along nicely!
Greetz,
Ayreon

really like the hands..
Don't think this textures is the right one for this creature?

You're damn right. I never textured before on a creature. This creature is more difficult for me, there are no stops for a new texture, if you know what I mean. This was also just cylindrical UVWed.

Shoulderpads are removed. The shoulders are much wider now. I hope you like this...
It was friday, and I hoped to texture this creature, but he, tomorrow is a next day

Nice 3ddy !
Maybe you try the same change on te feet 2.......!
like it

verry nice 3ddy,
his feet remind me a bit of E.T.
maybe you can also try giving him another look,
not sure why, but I think a "pissed off" look should fit a stone-creature somewhat better.

Funny anatomy you've got there. I like it.
Can he walk with his feets, or he uses his hands instead?
It is really nice the modeling, I hope you can find a way for the texturing as well.
Keep it up.
they were very popular in the 80's

01-30-2003, 01:32 PM
damn, anyone still believe that I'm still original??
I will work on it. More stoney, i think:surprised
But, all you, thx for those fantastic replies. I go on working on it in the weekend.

02-05-2003, 06:47 PM
Oke a new idea to make it more an original thing. (true, never saw those boglin's before)
Here he will be covered by leaves, little rocks, plants, and roots.
Here an little start:
I still think your idea is original! The boglins didnt have feet, kids just stuck 'em on their fingers. Besides they werent really round like yours either, they looked more like little dragons. (atleast when i was 5 they did)
I think this is a clever idea, i like it alot :) You HAVE to do an animation of tons of these guys swimming through the river :)
Iguiniz.X.
02-06-2003, 02:21 PM
I do,
I know those boglin but they never came up when I saw your creature:beer:
Willem
02-06-2003, 03:06 PM
lookin' nice.
Should work on the textures though.
But remember start on texturing when modelling is done....
Succes!
There's some nice modelling here, especially the hands, but the design just doesn't say Lord of the Rings to me. However, the same could be said for about 80% of the entries. Maybe I missed the point of the challenge but I thought the task was to design creatures that would fit into the LOTR style set by the films. So many of the entries have a style all of their own.
Perhaps the changes you make will fix this, but the whole anatomy of this creature seems too far removed.
Just my opinion, no offence.
Stuart.
eddy-3ddy
02-06-2003, 05:29 PM
Rye > thx, maybe I will...;)
IquinizX > few, that's a releave
Willem > yes, those damn textures, never been good at it
scam > yeah maybe you are right, but I saw some creatures (like the dragon in LOTR II) that didn't fit. But this stone creature will look like tose ent trees, but then of stone. Stone is thikker...
offence... NP
If its stone you're going for then think about making it sharper. Get some rugged edges and cracks into it. You can model these in or play with the normals to get some hard edges going. This will help to give it a real weathered look. You can then use the geometry as a guide for texturing, getting some moss and dirt into those cracks.
At the moment I think its looks too soft, more like plasticine.
Think back to Treebeard and all the detail he had around his face.
eddy-3ddy
02-07-2003, 10:08 AM
yeah, you're right. thx for the tip, I will use that:applause:
