View Full Version : 32bit & 64bit
nibraz 06-10-2006, 06:55 PM Is 64bit better and good then 32bit? I want to use 64bit but.. sometimes it gets me confused. Shall I stick to 64bit or 32bit? I use my pc mainly for animations, internet, sometimes games, and all the other stuff. Here is my rig:
Amd Athlon X2 4400+
4GB of ram
Asus En6200 Graphics Card
I am probaly gonna get a Intel's Core 2 Duo when it comes out, any suggestions for 64bit or 32bit?

I am curious why you would get rid of a perfectly good 64 bit X2 processor?
Core 2 Duo appears impressive, but as yet I'd wait for some reliable 3rd party reviews before I'd be jumping ship.
What do you expect from 64 Bit? Are the applications you use most already ported to 64 bit?
If not, why bother?

The main thing is 64bit is much faster then 32bit and it supports 4gb of ram, just want some opinions.
Nope, 64 Bit is not faster per se. Some applications are faster, like CINEMA 4D 64 Bit, but only because legacy support for older proccessors then the latest generation could be dropped.
32 Bit apps will run at exactly the same speed on XP 64.
As for 4 GB, thats the maximum for a 32 Bit OS not a 64 Bit one. With a good setup XP 32 willport up to 2.5 GB per app which is sufficent in most cases.
You should make sure that you realy know why you want to change before you do it.

I installed 64bit os months ago dont have much problem, only my printer, scanner, cam dont work. Has for the speed, in 32bit I tried like opening maya and it took 10 secs to load and in 64bit it only took 3 secs to load. So there is a bit increase in performance. How many people really use 64bit?
If you dont have 64bit software, you wont notice much of a difference. Though all 4GB of RAM should be available....

How often do you restart Maya during work? If you don't have a noticable speedup in rendering (possible) or editorview (unlikely) then i can't see the point.
Load times are most influenced by the software you have installed beside the OS (AntiVirus, etc.). My bet is that a clean XP 32 Bit installation will load Maya as fast as the 64 Bit installation.
At the end it's only up to you, if 7 seconds per app start and ca. 1 GB more RAM for some applications that support it are worth not beeing able to use your Printer, Scanner or Digicam, then go for it.

Hell my bet is Windows XP 64 is slower for Maya, than the equiv 32bit Windows.
Remember that 32bit apps running in Windows 64, are using WOW32 Emulation which slows the programs by a smidge.
Unless you are using XSI64, or LW64, or C4D64, obviously there is very little advantanges
to using the 64bit OS.
And as for a Duocore Umm, the Duocore's are all 32bit, and Apple don't have a legit 64bit roadmap now they are using Intel.... So that would seem like an even sillier idea.

The CoreDuo 2 and all the other coming Intel CPUs will support 64 Bit.
My personal bet is that Apple will announce their new workstation line with Dual Core Conroe processors and maybe also Dual Dualcore Xeons later this year.

WoW64 is actually quite good, for MS. You can already see the speed up Windows 64bit has over older windows just by the fact that the WOW64 emulator can perform so closely to the 32bit native windows. The performance loss in 64bit windows when running WoW64 for 32bit apps is not really noticable at all. Only when you look at the numbers do you notice a drop of 1FPS here, a fraction of a second longer render there.. etc.
WOW64 is really impressive, considering MS's track record ;)
