View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - uthuan
uthuan 01-12-2003, 10:09 AM Ah . . . So here it is . . . my first attempt at a CgTalk challenge!
I'm going for a cliff dwelling creature, well adapted for climbing and making it's way around on rocky outcroppings. Backstory will follow shortly . . .

The Cuth'anar
____________________________________
Originally a generally peaceful race of cliff-dwelling nomadic creatures, the Cuth'anar lived in harmony with a wide variety of creatures of middle earth. Widely known for their architecturally beautiful dwellings carved from the very rock of mountainsides and stony gorges, it was the Cuth'anar that were called upon by the men of old to help aid in the construction of Amen Hen. It was then, during the final stages of the erection of this magnificent monument, that a crew of Cuth'anar, toiling to excavate the huge chunks of rock from the quarry along the cliffs flanking the great river, came upon a relic of some significance. What they found was one of the lost palantir, and as luck would have it, the curious stone-hewing quarry-men could not help but to peer into the murky depths of the enchanting orb. This was their fist step of their long fall into darkness at the hands of Sauron. Now centuries later the once peaceful rock-cutters resemble little their ancient ancestors. Corrupted and twisted by their dark lord, they now only serve to do his bidding and have operated as the foremen in the construction and upkeep of Sauron's many dark fortresses and keeps.

That's it for the time being . . .
Here are some quick shots of a quick sculpt that I'm working on . . . Hopefully some virtual modeling will follow soon.

cool sculpture, what kind of armature are you using for support there?
looking forward to seeing this one...

Heya King Mob . . .
Thanks for the quick reply . . . :D
The armature is pretty simple. It's constructed from 3/4in. steel pipe parts attached to a plywood stand. The part that goes into the back of the sculpture is a "T" joint, through which all of my aluminium amature wire runs . . . I keep a somewhat human proportioned amature on this one so I can pull the clay off and start on something else if needed . . .
Here's a pict of how it attaches to the base . . .

I've been working on this damn thing quite a bit for the last couple of days . . . I need to get started on some modeling in the computer . . . I hope it all turns out as well there . . . :surprised

Wow!
I'm glad I'm not the only entry that took the Clay Sculpture route!
Yours is very very very sweet.
Cant wait to see what you do in 3D!

That sculpture is awesome, and by the looks of that had the digital model will do it justice.
What sort of clay is that? This makes me want to enroll in a sculpture class. That is seiously cool. Looks like great fun to do. Did you learn the principles in school, or did you teach yourself?

mdme_sadie - Thanks much . . . I also hope the dynamism will come through in the final piece . . . we'll see.
Leigh - Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement. I'm really glad that you like the design. More is on the way . .
DivideByZero - Thanks . . . Yeah, it's good to see some sculpture going on. For me it's a bit more natural than drawing and the transfer from clay to polygons is a little bit less of a push since you end up figureing out how everything looks 3dimentionally first . . . I'll be checking in on your thread to see how your sculpture is progressing. :D BTW - What kinda clay are you using? Is that sculpey(sp?)?
lowdown - . . . modeling on the computer is much more slow and methodical for me. I hope I can pull off something that resembles my idea. :D I've actually taken a few figure sculpture classes and enjoy analog art just as much or more than working in the computer, although I wish I could find that damn undo button on my sculpting tools.
Here's a quick snapshot of the clay that I use . . . Chavant . . . I think it's french or something. I mainly use the hard (for hands, heads and other detaily things) and medium (for everything else).

Got the hand a little bit more finalized and roughed out a lower arm.
I wanted to give the fore-arm a bit of a curved look to it, but right now it's more looking like it's broken or somthing . . .
So much more work to go . . . :wip:

Good to see another LW user in here! I've got a sculpture background as well....in stone carving! Long time for a concept model....:wip: :wip:
Awesome start on this concept, have you thought of smooth shifting the top polygons on the middle knuckles to get more articulation? Just a thought about the detail on them.
I'll keep and eye to see how it grows. You're braver than me starting on the hands and working your way in, I always start with a lump and move outward so I don't have keep track of the spline count and how I''m gonna get it all to fit together later! :annoyed::D

Remi - Thanks for the shove! :D It's started to get rough to find time to work now that I'm back to school. I just add a couple polys here and there from time to time now. Who knows . . . maybe I'll actually get it done by February.
BlueCougar - Heya Cougar . . . LW rocks!!:buttrock: I have started to work in Maya and I have to say that if I had my choice I would go with LW for polymodeling, but that's probably my inexperience with Maya talking for the most part. I've heard that it has a wonderfuly poly modeler, but I've yet to figure out how to use it effectively. I actually tried starting this model with CPS in maya and gave up pretty quick. I can do the nurbs patch thing but it just is way to time consuming . . .:D I can't say I've done much stone carving . . . the closest I've come to that is working with cement . . . which actually is pretty cool.
Here's a kinda weak update . . . :D
