View Full Version : Forum Fun: Ariel WIP
Creepstown 01-12-2003, 08:46 AM So heres my idea for the forum fun activity. This'd be a coming of age movie with alot of bizarre imagery and adult content. Using the starting premise of Little Mermaid, we find Ariel becoming more and more rebellious until finally she uses the power of her fathers trident to make herself human and flee to the surface world. She ends up in L.A. and starts using the hypnotic power of her singing voice to gain influence and eventually start a punk band. This sends her voice across the nation and ensnares the hearts and minds of all who listen. Fame and fortune ensue, but Ariel begins to see visions and witness terrible acts of destruction. Armies of crabs sweep the coast, flocks of seagulls attacking all red-haired people on the streets and the terrible premonition of a giant tsunami ready to swallow L.A. Is this her fathers doing? Evil scheme by Ursula? Delusions as a result of recent heroin use? Or perhaps Ariel didnt realize the power and consequence of using the trident. She starts to doubt herself and must make a choice. Stay in L.A. or go home and face her father. Either choice bears certain doom.
So yeah, I've really been thinking about this concept alot. Heres a preliminary sketch done in about 15 minutes. I'll submit more later as this is a work in progress. Enjoy!

That´s a good tale! How it finish? HOW? Whats her choice? My nails cant stand the agony. :argh:
You´ve really thought the history and that will show in the result. The sketch is very expressive (for spanish people: does the pose reminds you OT? he he)
Besides the red hair, i´d add some details from the little mermaid, as the shells bra, and a fish skin pattern on the trousers.
Waiting for updates.

Pancreas, thanks man. Your support is great. The pose is very expressive, I wanted that crazy, I'm on stage look with the mic high in the air. I've eliminated the shirt and left the shell bra for all to see. I won't be putting scales anywhere, but her pants will be roughly the same color as her tail. Maybe a bit darker.
As for the ending, I'm afraid I cannot reveal that. Its left open to interpretation. The key to a movie description is to leave the ending way open and very unpredictable. That way people wanna see it, really bad.
But dont' worry, here's an update. It's the new design for my Ariel. I'm thinking of a movie poster design right now. Not sure if I'm gonna incorporate this image, but i might. I drew this today and almost posted the sketch but i decided to ink it instead. So, crits are welcomed and I hope you enjoy the new Ariel.

Ha Twisted! Good stuff man. If all goes well, I'll have some crazy stuff done before the Jan. 31st deadline.
Fan mentality would be nice, but I wouldn't say i have it yet. My first two threads did pretty lousy and I didn't even get any posts by the mods. Hopefully, people will come around to this thread. And yeah, it would totally suck if someone tried to steal my ideas or horn in on them. Thats just dishonorable and wrong.
But people know better than that.
So anyway, glad your 'keeping an eye on this thread' man.
Laters.

We should put up another sticky thread for people that don't get any posts in their threads. Some people are too worried about what posts that they get (or don't get). Personally, only about half of my stuff ever gets responded to, and rarely ever by a Mod. This doesn't bother me, and it really shouldn't bother anyone else. There's so much stuff to see here. Just appreciate the fact that we have a wonderful and free forum to post our stuff.
Not to mention, the 2D side always pales in comparison to the 3D side as far as posts and browsers.
Okay off my soapbox and back to reality.
Creep, you had a really strong idea on the first picture. I think it would be a shame not to go back to that one. I know you put alot of effort into the second one, but there is less drama there, less feeling. At any rate, you are pretty good, and I do hope you can finish this one. You are the only Ariel (I think).

Edit: Also, she has a cigarette. Disney would rather show things with their heads getting blown off, than have to deal with the lawsuits of one of their beloved icons *smoking*
(Just a funny thought, but probably true.)

well i just thought id post my thoughts,
personally i think its her face that doesnt match her body in the second post, nice inking yes yes and we discused this earlier but yea, i think if she had a "not so happy" face than it would help compliment her awsome body, as for the smoking thing, i donno its supposed to be adult based, and its kinda that whole "rebelious" attitude u wanna give our rebel arial ;) witch brings me back the the face, not rebelous enough (sp?) maybe some peircings (and i mean on the face)? tatoos.... i donno peace out hopefully we can get some more attention down here in the dark 2d forum. peace

You know what dmcgrath? You're right! This is a wonderful and free forum for all those willing to show great artwork and contribute to a hivemind of intelligent and creative individuals. I shouldn't be worried about the number of posts and views at all. I should just concentrate on making more great art and sharing it with everyone. Thanks man!
Now, off my soapbox and back into the fray.
Yeah, the first pic had energy and fire, the second pic was more or less working out some details with the costume design and overall look. I'm working on some more poses for the poster and perhaps a cd cover too. It all depends on how much time I can scrounge up. Irregardless, I will do my best and strive for an award!
I think I am the only one with an Ariel concept so far. But others could arise. I think Cgfreak has a King Triton/Gandalf highbred going but thats about it. I was about to do Mulan, but Art7sayan and one of my friends beat me to it. Oh well, this Ariel idea is really starting to work out for me.
As an animator, I know all about Disneys foibles. I got the silly symphonies DVD a while back and quite a few characters smoked in that. Nowadays, no disney cartoon smokes, except for that old woman in Atlantis.
But yeah, thanks again. I didn't know what to expect on these forums. It's my first month!
Twisted! yeah, the face was a bitch to get right. And its probably my least favorite part of the pic. As for the Tattoo, I've got something in mind. But i gotta get a pose done where we can see it. He he he.
I dunno about piercings, I had the bellybutton one, but i was thinking nipple bars would be cool too. Though i dont think i could post stuff like that here. Eatpoo forums yeah, but not here.
Well, we'll see.
Join us next post.

Snowfly - Thanks man. Appreciate the support. I just hope i can finish.
Dmcgrath - Thank you. I've been working hard on a good composition and figured I'd use that first pose again.
[666]Flat - Well that's about the harshest comment I've ever had.
but my thoughts involved HOT ADULT XXX ACTION and PERVERTED IDEAS GALORE.
Not a fan of the porno myself, but if you want, go ahead and submit something along that vein.
your Arielle looks like a FAG
Well, i didn't want her to have noodle arms, I wanted to give her a tough look. I was gonna give her short hair, but I kept the long hair to maintain that femininity, that and her curvacious hips and breasts. I don't see how she looks like a gay man at all. But thats just your opinion i guess.
I'm working on the lineart for that thumbnail above which is just a preliminary sketch. The Ariel up front looks kinda bad, I'll admit, but i was working on a small size. The final lineart will look better.

Sorry guy. Still don't see it. I was pretty offended. I used to be really bad at drawing women, but i got way better. This pic used to be my pride and joy. But even then I was aware of the eyes and arms when I posted it. Your calling her a Fag really hurt me but somehow my heart will go on. (sacrasm, in case you didnt catch it)
Still don't see how she looks like man. I haven't known any transvestites or drag queens in my travels. Maybe you could clarify some more on how she looks like a man. I mean, just cause she has upper body strength and jeans doesn't make her a man, Right? Or is it the cigarette?

I live in San Francisco, and I will attest that, I have never seen a transvestite look that good. Chicks can have muscles. The thing that keeps them femenine are the slender hands, and the lack of an adam's apple.
The pic that Flat was referring to has some problems, least of which it's a little boring. But I don't see the masculine thing either.
Oh well,

Dmcgrath - Thanks man. I do agree with the boring pose and the anatomy problems. That was just a new pose I was trying out, I did't want to do the model sheet thing or a contraposto pose.
oh, well.
Dampire - I dont' mind that you post one pic in my thread. I am kinda surprised I've got fanart for my unfinished idea, I feel kinda weird about having competition for it.
Sithmaul - thanks man. Support is always welcome.
[666]flat - I dunno what your problem is. You started off calling my pic a Fag and point out the anatomy flaws already stated by myself and others. No new critique, just derogatory comments. Oh, and your intentions of using this idea for pornographic satisfaction.
Then, you try to justify yourself by explaining that she looks like a man, yet again, and then assure me that later in life I'll agree with you.
Then you say I can't take critique and i dont wanna improve my "jackshit" Well, I'd take your critique if it wasn't already stated in other peoples posts and if it wasn't so narrow-minded. I never once said this pic was perfect, that was just your assumption. If you actually read my posts instead of just looking at the pictures, then you might have caught the parts about that picture being a costume design sketch, and that I was aware of the anatomy problems. But you dont read too well.
I admit proportion problems, but her ankles not broken. Because of the thick soles on her shoes, shes leaning the the side of it. I've seen many a people do it before. I'm not gonna fix it because its just a costume design sketch and its not my final submission.
I would have taken your critique if it wasn't already old news and littered with derogatory comments.
well in this case I'll stick to doing something more useful and leave you alone.
Good, leave my thread alone. You should spend more time giving thoughtful critique and working on your own stuff instead of insulting peoples work and trying to justify it.

[666]Flat - your comments are among the most immature and pathetic ramblings that I have ever seen on this forum. If you have nothing more to share other than your distorted little adolescent views, then refrain from posting.
Thanks.
I saw this discussion last night but I was too tired from work to respond. So, let me throw in my comments and put and end to this ASAP.

First off Thank you Leigh and Kirt for cleaning up this thread. I really appreciate it.
Next off,
Dampire - If you wanna do a version of Ariel based on my idea, go for it. I just didnt expect it. I dont mind too much. If you want to show a wip or an update, i suggest you start a new thread. I also suggest you do a new costume idea or something, so that both of our designs aren't too alike.
As for your pic, I'd say its more anime than mine, but thats cool. Her hands are too small and her pelvis/waist needs some fixing up.
So yeah, start a new thread with your update if you want.
