Uh I don't know if I post this in the right thread, but I want to know how can you this type of cel shading, without those harsh looking lines??

Is it possible to do this in maya (learner's edition:sad:) and/or 3DS Max?????? Thanks:)

Brazil from Splutterfish has a great toon shader material that gives you a ton of control.

Check out the Spongebob Ride film examples we did at Blur and Rune Spaans Hellboy example on their website.

Other packages have similar tools but I can only comment on rendering packages that I have used.

I remember reading a tutorial some time ago about doing cel shading in MAX with the falloff shader which will give you the result your after, but I can't remember where it was. I'll have a look around and get back to you if nobody beats me to it.....

edit: Found it- http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/cel_shade_tut/cel_shading_tut_main.asp

I think this is a gradient material in maya, with a parameter set to surface angle. I don't have maya here so I can't check. Same principle.

In Maya you can use a Sampler Info node's Facing Ratio connected to a Ramp's U or V coord. Make sure to set the ramp to either U or V afterwards. Then make some sharp gradients in the ramp and plug it into the shader's colour. Yep, same principle.

I made a cell shading tutorial, it should help. http://www.bluesfear.com/tutorialframe.php?tid=312
The one that said affected by light, is the one you are looking for. Its all about falloff maps, there are no need for plugins or anything like that.
