ANy help would be good...

Does anyone know how to create or know where I might find expressions (R7.3) to be used in conjunction with character animation/ rigging i.e creating custom sliders etc. any help would be appreciated... (I don't have MOCCA OR R8, any donations are welcome!:applause: )

animated gif of character attached....

Quick questions for people who upgraded to R8...

1. Is it worth it?
2. How much better is it for character animation?
3. Are the F-Curves any good?
4. XPresso, is it all it is cracked up to be?

ciao

in answer to teh r8 questions

1) Yes, if for nothing else than getting good OGL speed increase.

2) The base package gives more for CA with things like sound scrubbing in the timeline and of course Xpresso which makes life a lot easier, but apart from that not much has changed, oh and Motion groups are taken out of the base package so you will miss those, however if you add MOCCA then it's a world of difference, automatic chain creation, SoftIK, better constraint display, easier bone creation and weightmapping, just vastly better. So yes it's way way way better.

3) Depends on how you like to work, Time curves are still there but have ot be aded as time tracks if you like to work taht way. Personally i think F-Curves are way better, motion cycling, better ease in and out (i find)... everything seems way better to me, but maybe that's just me, best bet download the demo and try it out.

4) That depends on what you think it's cracked up to be. It's not a texture generatino system, it makes life a lot easier for expressions, mayn mayn times easier than using COFFEE, if you've used a node based system elsewhere then you should feel right at home. Thinking Particles is extremely difficult to get into at first i should warn you, but it is powerful and cna do many things the old particle system couldn't.

Really you should just go and download the demo, you can see for yourself and play around. Remember to switch open gl displays on in the preferences to get for most people a great increase in speed. Try it out, that's the only way you're going to find out, as after all most poeple are going to be biased (i know i am), so just give it a shot.

as for some free expressions, you could use the ones in the rig I provided a while ago on here (something like "character animationin 7.3 is possible") though you may want to add a roitation limit or two onto some of the bones, as a few people noticed it can be broken, I rarely use limits myself, as often I will want to break a characters limbs, you'd be amazed how natrual a motion can look, classical animators do it all the time.
