View Full Version : Playblast: crashing and premature finish
DOOMNINJA 01-12-2003, 02:47 AM I did a quick search of the Maya threads for any "playblast" questions, but i wasn't able to track any down, so I thought i'd just make a new thread. Seems others are haveing similar troubles with playblast, but like I've said, i couldent find any solutions. So if anyone has any knowledge pretaining to playblasting problems in particular, please feel free to spread the wealth :). Thanks a bunch, of grapes. On a vine. mmm grapes.

yes...good question mr. doom. i seem to have the same problem. it seems when i try to playblast a scene, it will seem to work fine untill midway through it will stop taking screencaptures and the avi file will be incomplete. it will work if i restart maya. but after i have done one playblast i cant do anymore.
what gives?
any help would be great,

usually, playblast creation stops, if one switches to another application while capturing screenshots. sometimes, it also stops, when bringing up the taskbar during the process.
did you already try to start playblasting and then do nothing until it's finished ?

Yes, durring the screen capture process, if you move another applicatoin in front of the capture area, you are likely to lose the current playblast, and since most playblasts default to the lower left corners, you run a high chance of soemthign interfearing with it if you decide to monkey around (startmenue etc). However, I've been able to manage other programs, (with premeditated execution no doubt :)) such as msn and web browsers, even PS in a smaller windows located in the upper right of the screen, without affecting the curent playblast. Sometimes the Playblast will bugger out on me, but it happens just as often when i touch absolutly nothing as well...
One thing is for certain... i have no idea.
Thanks for your suggestions. Please sir, can i have some more?

sometimes we have to face things, which lie out of the scope of our logical horizon, so why not simply COPE WITH IT !?

hmm....i think i understand what doom is trying to say...it seems like he and i are have the same sort of trouble, or problem. what he has described is very similar to what happens to me. the only difference is that i never use msn (cant stand chatting) and use photoshop only when im not playblasting......so perhaps this playblasting mystery will linger on....haunting us, untill a solution is found....
going all the way to get to the bottom of this.....

The same thing happens to me.
I normaly just click playplast and make sure that nothing else is moveing or calculating, but it doesn't work every time.
It's impossible to use playplast on a very heavy scene.
I think playplast crashes when your computer is not fast enough to calculate the animation in realtime... Maybe playplast have to calculate it realtime becouse then things like particles would not be correct.
Wish the playplast was more like Max's Preview Animation.. It's alot more stable.

sorry i don't have the solution but i've got the same problem and it really gets on my nerves, since i must finish my movie in a few days! I tried to allocate more virtual memory in windows (xp) but no change! i also tried to modify the "maxmem" settings in the menu of "msconfig" command but nothing! always that playblast crash and some runtime c++ errors that crash maya! I've got a dual xeon 2.8 with 2go Ram ddr400, 200go HD with 16mo cache, and a geforce quadro fx 3000.
PLEASE A SOLUTION :o(

Good question, no solution at the moment. I'm having the same trouble, along with a few other members of the class. We're on holidays now but I'll give my teacher a call and see what we come up with.

oh yeah, the playblast tends to stop for me when there is a cut between camera shots. Anyone else? Hello Mrs Pumellhorst, I'd like to get down now.

this may help ur problems, it also may not. werked for me so give it a try if so inclined.
-right click on your "maya.exe" shortcut and head to properties. open up the compatability tab and "run the program in compatibility mode for : windows 2000". give it an ok and restart maya.
at the very least u should now be able to switch to a different app and back again without the "frozen screen" prob while playblasting (the movie will however still be frozen for the length of time u were in ur other app). as a bonus say goodbye to screenfreezes during rendering aswell!
