sup everybody. excuse my punctuation. i hate the shift key.

ill be doing proginoskes, a cherubim from madeleine l'engle's book a wind in the door. coming up with a concept will be tough because he's descibed vividly and ambiguously at the same time. when you read about him, your imagination runs at a hundred miles an hour but you never settle on any one single image within your mind.

for my first post i thought it would be neat to include some exerpts from the book, so that you can imagine for yourselves what it is i'm trying to manifest. then, when my concepts are posted, you can see how close or how far my mental renditions are to yours.

charles wallace (a child character in the book) thinks he's a drive of dragons:

"...(they were) all sort of clustered together, wings, it looked like hundreds of wings, and eyes opening and shutting between the wings, and some smoke and little spurts of fire... they kept folding and unfolding wings and sort of winking all those eyes at me, and then they all seemed to huddle together and go to sleep... "

They find a patch of feathers left behind by the cherubim:

...they were extraordinarily soft and sparkling at the same time; and between the feathers were bits of glinting silver-gold, leaf shaped scales...

"i don't think its from a bird... the rachis isn't right... the rachis. sort of part of the quill. the rachis should be hollow, and this is solid, and it seems to be metallic.."

finally they all meet proginoskes in person:

...she had the feeling that she never saw all of it at once, and which of all the eyes could she meet? merry eyes, wise eyes, ferocious eyes, kitten eyes, dragon eyes, opening and closing, looking at her... wings in constant motion, covering and uncovering the eyes. when the wings were spread out they had a span of at least ten feet, and when they were all folded in, the creature resembled a misty, feathery sphere. little spurts of flame and smoke spouted up between the wings...

"his name is proginoskes."

"he's not dragons?"

"he is a cherubim."

"i suppose you think i ought to be a golden-haired babyface with no body and two useless little wings?"

i think my subject is within the theme. it doesn't mention cherubim specifically, but cherubim inhabit the same neverrealm as gods and demons. if the mods think otherwise then i'll change my subject without argument. just let me know.

good luck to everyone.

hey cean!

I am very interested in seeing how this turns out! I think we are more or less on the same boat. I am working on a seraph (the 'im' is the plural ending in hebrew) and definitely want to stay away from the usual fat-chubby-cupid-looking-uselesslittlewings-angel...

Hope angels are allowed here.
Good luck!

this is just a quick little study. he's supposed to have hundreds of eyes, so i have a long way to go. im going to be an expert on modeling eyes after this project.

i guess you could say im stalling. im still not exactly sure how his body is going to look. this will probably be one of the toughest visual concepts i'll ever have developed.

you're right rev, cherubim is plural. cherub would be the singular. that's another intresting thing about this character. he's a made of a cluster of "cherubs," but remains a singular cherubim.

i don't think i should filter my work. im going to include every little thing i do in this thread. even if it's minute little excercises with shapes and patterns.

ive got an idea though. the next post should be an actual concept.

Yes, I agree, a caracter without well done eyes can lookse a LOT.

Nice. The feathered pubes were a nice touch. A bit perverted for an angel(or am I just perverted?) ;)

i had a little bit of free time tonight. so i figured id better get this ball rolling. i know what he'll look like in my mind. ill do a concept drawing later. i guess i do things backwards sometimes.

this is the begginings of the wing. no feathers yet:

i made this this "guide model" to point-by-point the body from. since is body will be almost covered with eyes, i figured point-by-point would be the best way:

the wings will go around the body like this:

im going to try and update everyday from now on, so that i can keep my momentum going.

peace out.
