View Full Version : Masks: Alpha Channel
Bmoner 06-08-2006, 04:54 PM I have purchased Fluid Mask and since it's now simple to mask things with it, I've been trying to learn all about masks. I was doing the online tutorials and the instuctor said that when you Ctrl+click the masked layer, that would create an alpha for that layer. And then from there he was able to click back and forth between the alpha and image and they were displayed on screen (not in the little layer thumbnails).
I'm not sure if he was using CS or CS2, but how can I click back and forth between them to view my alpha that I created? I tried his way that's on the Quicktime video, but it doesn't work that easily for me.

Oh and I did look through PS help, but it didn't help because their help files are VERY confusing wihthout visual aid.

Once you make your mask you can hit the backslash key (the one above enter) and that will highlight the masked area usually in red.... Is that what you were talking about, post a link if you could...

Here's a link to the tutorial. The technique I'm talking about is near the end.

You are aware that this is a tutorial for an additional plugin?

I am fully aware of that. However my question isn't about the plugin, but about how he goes back and forth between the cutout image and the alpha channel of the image "inside" of Photoshop just by click between the two on the layer panel. I want to select and view my alpha map without having to go into channels and turn it on and all other channels off.
Now I don't know if he was using CS, and they took the feature out of CS2...but on the same layer he just click the alpha mask and it showed up in the image window without him going into the channels menu. That's what I want to do.
My intention was not about how to use the plugin, and I apologize if that's what anyone thought when reading this.

alt + click the layer mask thumbnail in the layers palette
that will show the raw layer mask in greyscale
yes? no?

Hey thanks man, using PS for years now and never ever heard about this.
BMoner, my question concerning the plug was more aimed that this diplay of the mask could be a feature of that plug-in which it isn't(but I didn't knew until now)

Yeah this plugin as been advertised for a long while, but I always thought that it was just a wanna-be-made-easy plugin until I tried it. I do a lot of photography ads for clothing companies and this is by far the best solution for me to cut and place models. It even gets the tiny crap between the HAIR STRANDS. It's sweet. An essential tool in a box now forever.
