Hello i have a small problem on a project i have been running and was wondering if anyone could help;

I have been trying to create a model of the planet earth, that can be zoomed in on to a resnable size. My first soultion idea is to use a texture; having found alot of high quality material i tryied to apply said texture to my model. however i get this error message

Error: Image conversion (to IFF) failed //

// Warning: Failed to open texture file C:/Documents and Settings ...

I am guessing that it is because the file resoultion on the file is rather large (21600 x 10800), i have scaled the image to a quater and it works fine but does not offer the detail required. Any suggestions on how i can get maya to accept the texture. I am open to any other suggestions as well, for example downloading a model of the planet earth that has the relife modeled ect.

Thanks alot for you help.

Make multiple versions of the texture and use high detail only where needed. You could for example extract smaller sections of the earth model and map these bits with higher detail textures. Then animate the transparencies as you zoom in or out. Speed in the zoom and radial blur helps to get the illusion too. I did this kind of thing a while back in film resolution. Camera moved from an olympic stadium to space. It's in my reel if you want to take a look at it (last thing in the reel).
