In 4 hours I will start installing my system (I have to collect my Raptor HDs from the post office and I will be all set
PLEASE  go through my check list and see if I am doing everything OK...missing any steps? I can't handle anymore drama.

MOBO is Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895
OS- WinXP 64
All HDs are SATA ones and I WON'T be setting up RAID.

I have two floppies-
Floppy A- Windown 98 Boot disk --> This one--> "Windows 98 OEM" taken from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Floppy B- Bios 1.03 and contains-
PHLASH16.exe
flash.bat
2895V103.wph

1- Power system and enter Bios by pressing the "Delete" key?
2- Choose "load setup defauts" and save
3- Switch off power button
4- Unplug power supply
5- Press SW50 (Reset CMOS Button) for 5-10 seconds
6- Re-connect power supply
7- Start PC with Floppy A inserted and keep tapping F5 key on the keyboard.
8- After the PC has started eject Floppy A and insert Floppy B
9- Type "flash" then press ENTER and the MOBO will get flashed
10- Exit and switch off the PC
11- Turn on the PC and press "Delete" to enter Bios--> load setup defaults and save

Is that it? Everything ok so far?

Then boot from the Win XP64 CD and install OS. My MOBO is a SATA Mobo and so are all my HDs but I won't be using RAID--> Does that mean I don't need to do F6 and install "NV RAID SATA and RAID DRIVER" floppy disk? Can you please re-confirm this?

Once I enter the Windows desktop successfully I go and install driver pack for winxp64bit on the tyan website

http://www.tyan.com/support/html/drivers_support.html

AMD Driver Pack for all Opteron boards - here (ftp://ftp.tyan.com/chipset_AMD/DriverPack/)
AMD 8131 Drivers for S2895 - here (ftp://ftp.tyan.com/chipset_AMD/8131_PCI-X/)

Do I need to install both packs? Will these two pack take care of everything? After that I only need to install the video card drivers and I am good to go?

If you read this far then I am impressed :-)

Thanks

Updated advice from another forum -

- yup; looks fine to me, except would use [I always use] the plain DRDOS flashdisk from www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com/). Would put the AMD drivers in before NFORCE packs, & remember on no account install NVIDIA IDE/SATA drivers [unless, obv, you use their 'RAID'].

Have you run Memtest86+ v1.65 [or later] from floppy/CD?

Just out of curiosity, why are you updating BIOS?

Just out of curiosity, why are you updating BIOS?

From what I gathered Bios 1.01 does not report the temperature correctly. Plus Opteron 285 requires V1.03 to be detected properly. Don't quote me though :)

Its 1.02 that reports temps wrong. I also think its 1.02 that brings dual core support (not sure about the 285 though). Just from memory.. Anyway I'd take a look at what BIOS you've got before flashing. If its already got DC support and all, I wouldn't bother flashing it, unless you run into some strange problems that dont seem to have any good solutions.

Update-
Ok it has Bios 1.01.2895 installed and it shows CPU temperature as 26°C. Sees all the 4GB of RAM. Under CPU it says 2.6GHZ does not say 2x 2600MHZ though. That might be Bios related.

Should the Bios show 2x 2600HMz?????

No.. you mean under Hardware Monitor in the bios ? its not suppose to show 2.. its just theCPU type.. you do however see..

CPU 0 Dual Core Opteron™ Proccesor 285
CPU 1 Dual Core Opteron™ Proccesor 285

plus all your memory and stuff at the 1irst screen yea ? unless you have quiet boot enabled..
1irst thing i ever turn off when i build a puter is the MB logo screen

unless you have quiet boot enabled..

EDIT- OK I see what you mean let me turn it all on and reboot.

Edit2- Well I disabled "quiet boot mode" but I don't hear any beeping sound like on my current PC when it boots. I don't see CPU 1 and CPU 0 in th eBios like you described. Oh and no MOBO logo.

Dont even touch that !.. i was confusing it with the like a logo screen instead of the details..
but i just enabled it and no more boot.. lol. i dunno what quiet boot is but i had to reset my
c-mos and go back in and redo all my bios settings to get it back ! sorry i opened my mouth
on that one..

Well I uset F9 setup defaults again and it works same as before. I am going through the images in the manual and no where do I see CPU 0 and CPU 1 in the Bios screen grabs. What does your Bios show now Lolly? :-) So should it show CPU1 and CPU0 in the Bios?

I am gonna take a break and flash Bios to the latest 1.03. Damn my head hurts :scream:

Lolly thanks for the e-mail  Let me flash to 1.03 as well...

Ok the image you showed me is probably what you see just before entering the Bios. I get that as well for few seconds and it says CPU1 and CPU0....etc.
In the actual Bios with menu you don't see what you showed me ;-P I think.

Hit pause on the keyboard right at that screen before BIOS is done loading. It will give you time to actually read it all out ;)

Pause did the trick ;-P
