View Full Version : Northbridge heatsink for nForce 4 chipset?
UrbanFuturistic 06-08-2006, 11:06 AM Can anyone point me to a decent replacement fan for an nForce 4 Northbridge on this mainboard (http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=171&model=455&modelmenu=1), or at least confirm whether something like a Zalman NB47J would be suitable? I'm not overly keen on spending £25+ on a replacement.
Damn cheapass sleeve bearings.

Just grab some cheap chipset fan for £2, theres no point spending half the price of a motherboard on a fan.

That might work, only they're all sleeve bearing, and the Zalmann one I mentioned is a) fanless and b) less than £5 so if it's OK for this chipset it'd be ideal, I just haven't been keeping up with hardware these days and I can't afford a new board right now if I toast it.

Yes nb47J is a must have with Asus a8N boards, it actually runs a degree or two cooler and eliminates the annoying noise from the n.bridge fan. Easy to install too.
I have the exact same mobo and I picked up nb47j the day I bought it, knowing that active N-bridge cooling is not for me, and hearing reports of n-bridge fan failing in a short period of time. Other than that it's a great mobo.

Thanks, it has indeed been failing for some time but I'm not used to this northbridge heatsink malarkey.
Ooooh, I remember when you were lucky if you had a co-processor, and heatsinks were the size of doghouses and you had to walk ten miles to get them and ten miles back, and it were uphill both ways, and they only had them once every 5th Thursday of the month, and they ran on coal...
Heatsinks the size of dog houses? If anything, heatsinks have gotten bigger as time has gone on :)
My 486 and Pentiums both have something the size of today's NB coolers sitting on top of them... Not even mounted down on the CPU. Just glued on :)

You will need to take out the mobo, since getting the n.bridge fan off will require snipping off the plastic clips on the back of the mobo, if you can find another way to remove the fan then you could install the the passive heatsink without removing the mobo, I read somewhere that someone succeeded at the removal of the fan without touching mobo mounting. Just be careful not to damage the mobo with a screwdriver.

I have been a big fan of the larger passive heatsinks on the NB. my Abit VP6. while old has great big Passive HS on NB. Of course that was back in the day when stock for NB was a greenie.
