I don't consider myself a great 2d artist but here is the concept for my 'Hobbits Pet' Kind of a cross between a caterpiller and a dog and a elephant and somthing else....let me know what you think so far....thanks...:thumbsup:

Remi

Character development....

Mostly it's like a dog....it behaves like dog but comes from more of a cow'ish type of existance...used to graze in grass fields and roam freely...gentle species....they come in different colors and different sizes.....there are still some roaming wild kind of like wild horses(mustanges or whatever) they have the tolerance to roam without water or food kind of like a camel for several days and maybe even weeks if needed......more to come just have to sit back and think some more...hope you like it so far...i'm pretty happy with the idea and as far as I know its original so i'm going to stick with it...hopefully will begin modeling next week...Let me know what you think..:thumbsup:

Very cute,the cutest so far. I think you should go for the biggest fullest dream like eyes for this cute little beast. Glassy,watery type eyes full of feeling and pleasantness.

Deep texturing of some type dino skin as well would be a nice extra,just some thoughts for now.

Also perhaps a meaner side...............Like a sudden outburst of anger would cause the cute little fellow to swell up almost twice his size and show hidden teeth not seen before..................you get the idea Remi.

:)

See you after your next update.:beer: :beer:

Remi
01-12-2003, 01:44 PM
Thanx Virtuoso I will keep the texturing idea in mind....the multiple personality thing might conflict with character idea but it definitly something I could keep in mind incase I decide to make this another creature other than a hobbits pet...thanks for all of the input...helped greatly on the texturing side of things...well back to work...hehe:thumbsup:

Not exactly the kind of creature I would expect from a Cradle Of Filth fan :D
But it's veeerrrrry cuuuuuute! :love:
It would be cool to animate such a creature and make his little mini-trunk nose thing wobble about!!
Looking forward to seeing the model!!! Good luck for the challenge, Remi :thumbsup:

Hehe:) I think cute is the word... I very much like your idea, Remi. It's very original and I think it's a lot of potential surely you'll bring out.

Have fun and I'll keep an eye on you, even if you're in "underworld"...;)

Remi
01-12-2003, 04:29 PM
Yeah...not exactly a dark creature....but...I figured alot of people here would be leaning towards the dark side of things....so I wanted to avoid that....they're all great ideas that i've seen...I just didn't want to run into 'that's what i'm doing too' type a situation...thanks for the compliments everyone...hope to have something for you later....

Leigh...does this make me less of a Filth fan...*sob* hehe..thanks Leigh..hopefully I can get done with this one and maybe start something a little darker...:thumbsup:

Cute!!!
I agree with Leigh about the eyes. Looks like they're just spheres with a texture on them.
Depth is the key for living-looking eyes. (the pupil must bulge a bit forward,be transparent and slightly refractive, but I don't know the exact IOR though, and the iris must be a bit concave)

+ try to do a version where we don't see the "white" of the eyes... Usually animals are like that.

BlueCougar
01-13-2003, 12:45 PM
Looks great. As far as the feet go you said it was a grazer, why not hooves? Its about the size of those minature horses people keep as pets. I'd have alot of deep colors in the eyes and keep out the white as much as possible, makes it more "animal cuter" the other way you take a chance of it looking a little crazed.....rabid even...hehe

Clanger
01-13-2003, 12:47 PM
Great!
Nice to know there's not only scary creatures around.

Don't know why but I see him as blue.

@King Mob....thanks buddy....yeah sauron better watch it...this guy has one mean lick..hehe

@nadeemmar...thanks alot...I appreciate the comments:thumbsup:

@pigwater....nottlemut it is then...thanks for the input....:thumbsup:

@m@....the eyes have a transparent cornea but i'm not sure about my refraction setting...what should it be set to...thanks for the comments:thumbsup:

@BlueCougar....going to try some different styles for the eyes...first I need to focus on the model though....thanks for the comments...:thumbsup:

@Clanger....I was thinking green but maybe I will try a couple of different color scemes for this little guy....thanks for the comments...trying to avoid the 'same thing' situations by not doing something dark...if I have time i'll try and get something else a little darker in here too...maybe a rabid form of the nuttlemut...hmmmm:thumbsup: :D

Update later tonight....:thumbsup:

Hey I want one!!

I was going to suggest that you do paws for the feet, the concpet you had looked a bit to evil for this thing.

Also with naming just pick a couple of words that relate to what your making

so lets take cute+hobbit+pet

Cuobbet. ( pron kwobbit)

cute eh!

Keep up the fantastic work!

Agraba
01-14-2003, 09:00 PM

But you can not name him moglet, that's to close to final fantasys Mog.

Cute though :love:

Remi
01-14-2003, 11:51 PM
@Dark_Lotus...you can have one after it's done...hehe...and I like the way you figured out the naming...thanks for the comments...:thumbsup:

@Cocoknight....thanks:thumbsup:

@Dirk_P_Ho....yeah...I was leaning towards sort of a pigish type of texture...we'll have to see when I get finished what I go with...thanks for the comments:thumbsup:

@erilaz....Thanks:thumbsup:

@Poju....it's more of a grazing type of creature...cowish with the behavior of a dog...I guess it could role around in the mud if it wanted too....thanks for the comments:thumbsup:

@Agraba....yeah..not naming him moglet....i'll come up with one soon...hopefully...i'm liking the way Dark_lotus came up with the name Cuobbet...I'll have to work on it....thanks for the comments:thumbsup:

really love the design so far - on the eye thing - depends which way you want to take it, if you're going for a realistic approach then probaly put a lot more solid colour in there, but if you want it to be anthropomorphic (giving it human characteristics) then go with the white/iris/pupil you've got going (but definitely follow the suggestion about putting depth into the eye geometry - keep it up:thumbsup:

OMG I can't believe I never thought of Zorgs pet - it DOES look a bit like him!!
But different enough to be your own, Remi ;)

Oh a related note, the other day I was sitting in a coffee shop with some friends, here in Cape Town, and the guy who acted as the president in The Fifth Element was sitting there having coffee!! :D
I'm a huuuuge fan of the film so I went up to him... and went all gaga :hmm:
Anyway, I cooed "I looooooooooooove The Fifth Element" and then he told me to salute him, so I did :p

My funny story for the week :p

Remi
01-16-2003, 07:46 PM
@Leigh....Yeah I got online last night and found a picture of the little thing and I thought it didn't look like my entry so I think i'll stick with what I have...it won't even look like it when i'm done....:thumbsup:

@Facial Deluxe....Thanks...:thumbsup:

@Sir_Manfred...Thanks I was thinking more of garbage disposal but that nose would work as a vacuum nozzle too now wouldn't it....hehe thanks for the comments..:thumbsup:

Well...a new render with some minor details added..let me know what you think...If you have any good places I could go to learn how to model a decent eye let me know....Not too happy with the one I got...thanks in advance....and now....

Update:

Added the front legs...decided to go with a rhino/elephant style...the original ones in my concept really didn't lend towards a grazing type of animal so...I changed em....the eyes again are still crapped but if anyone has any suggestions as to what to do with them they're greatly appreciated...thanks in advance...

Looking ace, Remi :thumbsup:

Looks like you may have gotten the idea for your surface look from Policarpo's fake SSS thread :)

The only thing that bugs me a bit is that the legs look like they might be a tad too small for such a big head... :shrug:

Remi
01-17-2003, 11:29 PM
Thanks Leigh...and actually I got the idea from you...you posted something in a thread to do with gradients...very good...I just used the settings in that.....very good work..I thank you for helping me...I saw what policarpo did too and I haven't tried that but maybe I should...it looked pretty cool....also, I was questioning the size of the head in relationship to the legs but i'm not going to be changing anything until the model is finished..I've some ideas for the back legs that might just make it work...:thumbsup:

@Levin....Thanks buddy...yours was looking pretty good yourself...keep it up:thumbsup:

Look for another update this weekend...hopefully it'll be done and then I can get to texturing...:thumbsup:

Great idea and very cute modelling !!! I'll be watching:rolleyes:

Per-Anders
01-18-2003, 10:10 AM
hehe, that's looking so cute

as for the hair render problem are you using Shave? if it's sasquatch then it might still be the same problem that basically when you have multiple hair "clumping" if you use a low res subd cage then because of the way it works out the hairs positon by the guides on the verteces, it can't handle the guides being at beyond a certain angle ot each other :(... so maybe (you use lightwave right?) freeze the cage subdivided and then re-apply the hair, because you'll have a smoother surface it should with any luck work better.

it's worht a try anyway. :)

@isometrix.....you're not the first to tell me something like that...it's been compared to the creature in 5th element and ice age...I take those as compliments and i'm flattered to hear such things because i thought ice age kicked ass....thanks for your comments:thumbsup:

@Pigwater....thanks alot man....your project is coming along nicely as well...keep it up:thumbsup:

Hi remi........:wavey:

I have a thought or two on this cute little fellow. As for textures or skin finish are you thinking caterpillar,or lizard tough thick type skin?

Also I think as a Hobbits pet he is very nice,but.......................................How about a surprise,another demension or darker side to this otherwise Cute lil' guy. How about some hidden killer type teeth. Something more fierce and a added demension to the overall character bios could be just what the Doctor ordered.Keep the nice cute guy as he is,but it would be interesting to have another side to him as well.

Anyways just a thought,I like him,keep up the texturing and finishing touchs.:thumbsup: :beer:

Ohhh it is so cute... does he glow in the dark tooo?

Just kidding. Very nice concept, it is good to see you keep your style in mind. The texturing is very good too, tho this liitle hair seem to be a little trouble.

Saslite is a little hard to use, there is a lot of options, tho thei are quite limited, and the render takes too long, and then you see that the problem persists. Did you already try to make this hair with polys like menithings tutorial?

keep up the great work.

Problems: I'm not to good at texturing yet...and i'm having some problems....I tried to do the head uv as a spherical map on the z axis...used UVImaginator to save it and painted in photoshop...applied it in modeler...loaded in layout and there was all sorts of stretching...so now I made the top of the head a different map and that worked...now i'm running into problems with the 'face'.....the attached image is of the face mapped spherically on the z axis...any help is appreciated.........did that make sense....:wtf:

Have you tried the technique where you use a morph to manipulate the mesh so its lying flat to the z plane and then do a planer UV map creation?

Its really easy you just grab the area you want to map cut & paste back in place to seperate it then create a morph target like "face_UV" (just like a facial expression) and then you can manipulate the mesh so that the face is laid out flat like you would want it for your UV. Then you stay in the morph and "shoot a picture" of you UV from that and voila! you have a really workable UV map. You then go back to base mode and merge points back together.

Sometimes you have to go back in and weld a few points but its not that bad That's how I unwrapped the snakes that were intwined around my weapon for texturing. Otherwise I'd be bald from frustration right now. Message me if you have an questions about it.

Good Luck!:thumbsup:

@Leigh....i've tried...that's the unedited version that I posted....hmmmm....I will render out what it looks like after i've applied the textures and things and maybe that'll help me figure some things out too.....i'm still working....not done yet:thumbsup:

@BlueCougar....i've seen that but it looks to be like a little more work than needed....if nothing else works i'll try it out....thanks man:thumbsup:

I'm getting some pretty visable seems between my uv's...you can see it in the red circle in the picture....i'm using photoshop to do the textures and I made a color swatch so the maps use the same colors....can anyone tell me why this is happening...If needed I will post my uv maps that I have...thanks
