Roberto,

I'm sort of "out of the loop" on the FX Wars thing...is there a FAQ page?

I'm just curious what is the objective, time turn-around, etc.

Thanks,
Dan

We will be doing concept art and storyboards for the next challenge.

The turnaround is ONE week, but the artists will have a LOT of leeway.
The idea is to inspire people and give them ideas.

The reason for this is that the topic for the next challenge will require A LOT of composite work between live action and Visual effects, and the VFX guys will need guidance in the form of storyboards/concept art. the turnaround for the FIRST round of art will be ONE 7 day week.

I'll give it a shot. The concept, not the storyboarding. :)

Hey Tek man!
You are greatly missed !

Ok for those still with me..

Here is the topic so you guys can see WHY it is so hard...

And lets keep it quiet between us guys..
:)

The topic will be ...

Drumrool please....
Superpowers (inviso text)

Roberto, good to see you still keeping this place alive. :)

Certainly sounds like it could be fun. :) What sort of bent, though? Like, straight up Image, Marvel, DC type stuff, or humorous piss-take sort of stuff? :p

FXWARS is our ongoing visual effect challenges.
Click here for some cool eye candy:
FXWARS Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=139)

We have done 11 challenges so far.

Ok going back the the new challenge:

Well the participants will be able to do a fx sequence based on the following topics:

Grudgematch (Super power fight)
Rescue me
Heist
Super power Gags (Imagine a shot of a guy using his super power, like lifting a car, superpunch etc)
NO COSTUMES (Good God no), we dont need another Star Wars kid >>LINK<< (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_kid)

and the superpowers would be:

Flight
Power Ring
Super Strenght
Super Speed
Stretching
Enegery Blast (extra points if you use Kirby dots)
Electricity based power
Magnetism
Invulnerability
Ice Powers
The sequnces would be made with live action with visual effects.

Do you hook up with the FX artists or do you create your storyboard and they pick and choose? I'd like to expand into an ever present asset (not asshat) to this community but I'm afraid the one week timeframe is a little daunting.

And are the FX artists really so desperate that they're raiding the DSF for talent? - Just kidding!:scream:

RobertoOrtiz

JTD Both
I want to do an anoouncement with some concept art already done, so teams can come in a pick one for inspiration.

Then the team WOULD BE required to turn in some concept art of their own on what the intend to do. At that moment, any of the participating artists can join one or more teams as lead illustrator/storyboard artist.

Roberto, given the no costume thing, would I be safe in assuming the concepting in this case would be sort of scene concepting, as opposed to character design sort of stuff?

Hi Roberto:
I've been doing freelance storyboards for about 8 years and I'm interested in storyboarding this project if you still need one. Current samples can be seen here

www.priestportal.com

Click on Artwork and then Storyboards. I can draw in any style and match the look of anything thats already been designed. I'll PM you with my email address. Thanks!

Ok here is a quick recap...

Why we need help?
We will be doing some concept art /storyboards for an uncoming fxwars challenge.
Becuase of the extreme complexity of the challenge I wan to provide some pre-production artwork to all participants to help them & inspire them.

WHAT IS THE FXWARS?

FXWARS is our ongoing visual effect challenges of the CGTALK forum. The idea is to PUSH what can be done in terms of visuals.
Click here for some cool eye candy: FXWARS Forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=139)

We have done 11 challenges so far.

Ok what is the challenge about?

Well the participants will be able to do a fx sequence based on the idea of Superpowers.
The FX sequence requires that the "hero" character be a live action character.

The type of entry will be either

SINGLE SHOT
FULL SEQUENCE
All the work will be based on the following topics:

Grudgematch (Super power fight)
Rescue me
Heist
Super power gags (Imagine a shot of a guy using his super power, like lifting a car, superpunch etc) This type of entry is perfect for Single shots
Some ground rules:

NO COSTUMES (Good God no), we dont need another Star Wars kid >>LINK<< (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_kid)
No established characters.
And to keep our sanity the the superpowers should be picked from this list:

Flight
Power Ring
Super Strenght
Super Speed
Stretching
Enegery Blast (extra points if you use Kirby dots)
Electricity based power
Magnetism
Invulnerability
Ice Powers

The sequences would be made with live action with visual effects.
if you are doing a storyboard, keep in mind that people might use your boards for filming.
Ok what can I do now?
Well we are giving a LOT of leeway for artists & concepts artists to post concept art/ storyboards based on the aftermentioned rules .

If you have an idea for a sequence or some concept art post it on this thread. I will later post some possible scenarios..
My advice, KEEP IT SIMPLE

So
if you are interested, Post it here
if you have already some sketches, Post it here
if you have already some REAL WORLD costume design, Post it here
if you have already some Concept art, Post it here

Thanks Roberto..
the Power outage came to me, as i was driving the other day...
I could just see all the cheer and this poor guy not being able to cheer becuase he was keeping the TV going so everyone could watch the game.. and here you had all these super heros being more intrested in the soccer game than fixing the power. At least thats the story in my mind.

cool storyboards. but...what's the deal on the concept art? functional character design, or is it more arty/glossy stuff with action etc.? sorry for all the questions.

RobertoOrtiz
06-14-2006, 02:54 PM
Imagine this project like a mini commercial with visual fx.
It means we need to provide the "filmakers" with art assets so they can do their job.

Well the idea of this thread is for us to function as a art department working on a about superpowers.

BTW Well the logo design is for internal advertisement.

Basically, we're just looking for a bit of a blueprint for this challenge. The topic is so far-ranging, that it'd be nice to narrow it down a bit. These boards just have to clearly show what action is going on in the scene.

Stuff we'll be taking into account (cause we'll be filming some of these):

1) Camera angles/framing -- make em interesting, but doable
2) Number of characters -- Not too many, please
3) Does it tell a story?
4) How difficult is it going to be to shoot?
5) How difficult is it going to be to do the effects?

Stay away from character design, because god knows who we're going to get to play these roles for the shoot. The part of beautiful D-cup heroine may be played by not-so-beautiful D-cup JimBob from next door. We're aiming for more shot design than character design. If you think a very specific environment is integral to your gag, I guess toss that in, but doing an entirely CG environment is going to ratchet up the difficulty, and probably make the feasibility of that entry pretty low (we'd likely need to get a greenscreen).

The boards y'all have put up so far are cool, and interesting, and I like them. I think in general the ones shown so far are pretty appropriate, difficulty-wise. The electricity one could even stand to have another small gag, I think.

Anyways, I love what I'm seeing, thanks all of you for helping out. :)

Bone,
I take it your talking about my Power Outage Gag... I am sure that another gag could be worked in...

Going to see if i can squeeze out 1 or 2 more storyboards between now and friday. Any feedback is always welcome. Keep in mind i am doing these rather quickly. So i don't expect them to be very tight. If there is one in particular that someone wants me to tighten up send me a PM and I will happily tighten it up and add detail (shot wise) and such. At the moment i am working more on getting the intial ideas out. =)

Hi, I would really like to see my ideas on paper, as things which looks good in my head dont always look good anywhere else:P

So, if anyone have time for making a quick storyboard for me, this would be great.
My idea for this challenge is basicly two people playing baseball, than the hitter (or what the man with the baseball bat is called) hits the ball to hard and if flyes away. Than the thrower finds a car, smash it into a ball and they play on. No sure on how the character should smash the car, so I an really one for ideas.

If anyone have time, it would be really helpfull. Credit will of course be given.

Thanks:)
