"Maya Techniques | Fast Animation Rigs" - available now at the Alias store

So tell us about this one Jason (although it'll be bealtedly for me, as I've already ordered it.)

I still haven't invested in a DVDRom for my PC (still limited to viewing off my DVD player/tv), so I'm a bit concerned by the format (no accompanying CDRom). Will support files be available for download...somewhere?

Heya!

Wow, didn't realize it'd be up already. Great! :)

The DVD should come with a CD-Rom, I've emailed A|W to find out.. same sort of deal as the last one, it's over 80 pages of notes and a bunch of scripts/scene files with it.

This one is focused more on teaching techniques for working faster than giving specific scripts that do certain things.. for example, a whole section on how to make expressions which run fast.. when to use them & when to use nodes for connections.. how to animate quickly.. etc.

However, it does include specific scripts meant to speed up your workflow which you can include with scripts you created for the previous DVD.. so it has a good fk/ik system for arms which is faster than the 3-joint system.. a script which allows for incrimental rigging (going from low resolution to high resolution with your puppets using referencing).. etc.

enjoy! :)

Sounds great Jason - hope it turns up in my mailbox soon

And if it turns out I can't access the support files, I'll give you a shout :)

Now don't everbody go and order the DVD all at once and overload the shipping deptartment. Let them get mine sent out first...

KOOL!!!! I attended this class and it was great! Jason is the coolest. Defiantly pick this DVD up, I will. AW has quite a few new DVDs out but 200 bucks is quite steep. That’s more than it is to attend a master class.

Aw, nuts. I just checked my order status, and found that the DVD is "backordered." I'd have preferred that A|W would've waited until the physical product was on hand before putting it up on the website. The teases :annoyed:

Ah well, hopefully soon...

my company bought the "integrating a creature animation rig within a prod. pipeline DVD" from Alias , the dvd quality was very very poor , in fact you couldn`t even read what was on the screen,
is this one going to be different ?
thanks in advance Jason

in fact you couldn`t even read what was on the screen,

I watched the DVD only once. Everything is covered much more in depth in the PDF notes, so thereīs really no need to watch the DVD. Not sure if A|W could justify selling only the .pdf files for $129.99 .. :p

yes true everything is pretty much cover in the pdf but as you said $129 for an almost unviewable dvd is expensive ,
I mean , come on how hard will it be to capture directly from the computer an composed it all together with the voice afterward !?
anyway I hope this time alias do a good job on the DVD

I went to the Mental Ray master class...I along with everyone else was very dissapointed....

"Dear Matt,

I was sorry to learn of the situation that arose during Paolo Berto's Maya
MasterClass on 3 December 2002. I would like to sincerely apologize on
behalf of Alias|Wavefront for the poor treatment you received and the fact
that your class was cut quite short. I realize that your learning
experience was seriously compromised by these circumstances and I would like
to do what I can to ensure that you get the insight you need to use Mental
Ray for Maya.

In order to address this situation, I will be happy to do the following:

Provide you with a copy of the PDF notes prepared by Paolo for the session.
These will be forwarded to you within the next week;
Provide you with a copy of Maya Techniques | Using Mental Ray for Maya DVD
when it is complete. The product is scheduled for release in early January.

Thank you for your understanding. Please do not hesitate to send me your
comments and feedback."

Soo...Im still waiting for my Mental Ray fix.....

Is the 'Integrating a Creature...' DVD still worth it?? Is there a lot to learn? (whether it be from the DVD or the PDFs)

Because I was thinking of buying it. There just aren't really any other advanced rigging DVD type things.

Besides, Jason's cool hehe

I think that's what a|w did with this one.. I haven't actually seen the dvd yet, still waiting for my copy. :)

there's always lots to learn.. this dvd covers some stuff, but of course it can't cover everything. the main idea of the two dvd's is to get you thinking and give you advice & tips.. it covers a vew setup ideas (legs, arms, shouldes, back, etc) and a number of rigging ideas.. and provides you with a bunch of mel scripts.. but the main thing is to get you thinking and coming up with your own solutions, and provide you with reasons for those solutions.

Besides, Jason's cool hehe

HAH!

Ok thanks, that's basically what I thought. It stays at the top of my Maya list then.

Oh and just to let you and Weta Digital know, Weta will be hiring me as an animator in a few years, because by then I'll be just what they're looking for thanks to you (and some other key sources of Maya knowledge)!!

Hehe I wish.

Meh, I'll get there one day. Right now I just have to make it through one round of the Animation Challenge!!

Here, here! I donīt want to kiss ass, but I definitely agree with Jason on this point. The DVD(īs) donīt cover everything, but they do provide some solid examples and some very good ideas which the viewer take and expand on in his/her own way. Like everything, in the end it depends on what you can do with the information given. At least thatīs how I see it.
