View Full Version : Character Modeling Reel 2006 - Sam Wey
sammokablamo 06-07-2006, 03:24 AM Hey everyone, I just graduated and finished putting up my site and reel at http://www.samwey.com/
Take a look and give me your feedback. I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll be moving to LA around July. If anyone has any job leads in the area that'd be greatly appreciated as well!
Here's two shots from my reel:

hi, if this is your first modeling reel then its really good. your mesh topology looks decent too.
ill shoot some crits and be aware because im being brutally honest
the pugboy character design isnt really working in my opinion. the skin folds are too uniform and symmetrical and the overall concept doesnt look appealing or cute enough to model. also the head seems proportionately too small compared to his body.
the female model looks good but certain details like the fingers, feet, toes etc needs work in terms of anatomy. since the model is posed the areas like the arm pit, neck and places where the model deforms needs more work.
the zbrush screen of the wearwolf model looks really lot better than the normal turntable, dont know why.
few suggestion i recieved from my modeling teachers and i suggest everyone else are:
use specularity on grey shaded models.
avoid radiosity/GI renders because if its not done well it looks bad and also its a waste of render time.
finally, your logo of you squatting inside a circle was a little distracting on the whole thing and personaly i didnt like the logo.

mashru,
wow, thanks for the crits! they're really good, I agree with all of them! It's really rare to get really constructive, critical feedback like that. Yeah this is pretty much my first reel out of college.
my work flow for that werewolf was sort of weird. the turntable doesn't look as good as the zbrush render cuz it's a poly export from zbrush and it's not the actual displacement
i don't like the logo either actually. I just haven't had time to make a new one and i read in "how to get a job in computer animation" that you should watermark your work to deter plagiarism, not that i'm really paranoid...
Your work is excellent btw! Knew I should've taken those loans and went to SVA...

hey i think your reel wasnt bad at all! you have some nice topology on your models! for me it started of strong and then it jst kinda went down from there..i liked how the female was posed and then you showed here with the standing pose, i think you should have lest her in that pose and shown her wire...also she does need some anatomy work with her neck area but i dont think she is that bad...as for the wolf guy, its good but presenting it was bad...i think maybe adding some nice lighting to it so he stands out more since he has no textures..and the litlle logo interfiers witht he model rotating and it was disturbing as well..but other than that i think your demo is pretty good, just nedd to polish it up some more, and the music...well it really didnt fit the reel..but thats just my opinion...well god luck with your stuff

I'm glad you like my reel! Thanks!
do you mean BA (bachelor of art)? I'm fairly happy with my education there. The big thing at columbia is its film program so the computer animation program there is very much rooted in film. which is good and bad. In general, it's given me a really well rounded education in terms of film history, film preproduction and production, and my general education. They also make you learn traditional animation before you get into computer animation. And when you finally do get to computer animation, they really suck at teaching you the technical end of things, although it's improving as they getting a few teachers from EA. So you really have to learn this the actual techniques on your own. I don't think i learned anything technical from that school. Everything I know is from gnomon dvds. They don't run zbrush. ...I'm probably 1 of maybe...3 people that actually has a demo reel done in my graduating class right. Simply put, they don't prepare you for the practical end of getting a job so you'll need to fight for your time to do that shit on your own. It's also a pretty much open-admissions school so you'll have to work along side people that aren't screened for artistic talent or intelligence. i can be pretty viciously critical though so maybe you don't want to listen to me :) chat me up if you want. i'm kinda bored right now.
