View Full Version : Goblin model. any feedback?
puddlefish 03-11-2002, 10:51 PM This is the sketch I'll be working from. I'm going to model him in Cinema 4D and texture in Bodypaint. While being capable, Cinema 4D is slow to model in, so bear with me.
Will post some model shots soon.

Cool!
I like the belly... Don't know why... but it adds a nice touch. Can't wait to see it in 3D.

Here's a start on the head. Still needs alot of work, especially around the eyes (modelling with eyelids closed) and ears.
i can see already this'll turn out excellent, keep at it :)

cool, really cool, maybe the jaw should be further out (like in the sketch).... it gives a more agressive pose like "hey come here you pig, yeah, you" ;)
good work, waiting to see more

thanks for the comments. Here's a minor update. I'm going to redo the ears totally as they weren't behaving. I generally model characters with a fairly neutral expression, and alter it later after the model is rigged. I do a lot of facial animation (jaw, eyebrows, nose, ears) with bones, and then tweak the expression at a point level. This approach works best for me in Cinema 4D, so he may remain quite expressionless until the final stages.

Another few adjustments and it's time for me to go to bed. I'm jaded.

I actually really like Cinema 4D! It has a very friendly interface, but has some obvious shortcomings. I don't have access to any high end apps, and I'm used to using Strata :annoyed: , so 4D is a godsend comparitively!

URGHH!! Strata IS even worse! Yuck... well, I see where you are coming from then :) It's a pity you don't have access to better software though, because you obviously have talent :) But hopefully you'll get that chance sooner or later ;)

That goblin is looking pretty sexy.
Keep it up!

If there's one word I didn't expect people to use it was sexy!
Here's a bit more work on the body. The white marks are the changes I intend to make.
This'll be my last update today, I'm off for some quality time with my PS2.

Very nice!!! i wouldn't say sexy, but he is DEFINATELY freaky!! I like your concept on the head, though in my personal oppinion, i wouldn't go for that kind of body, but that's personal thing.
PS: i would go for a tall guy, with weird joints, and thin body...:D

Very accomplished piece of modelling there and nice to see someone showing what Cinema 4D is capable of. Think you should write Maxon a tut then they can replace that godawful Messie tutorial that abominates their website. :)

damn man thats fantastic
i love it to see sketches turn into 3d
good work!
Man some of you guys make Cinema4D sound like it's a low-end piece of software. That package can achieve practically anything you do in any other software. It's resmebles Lightwave most with its modeling workflow, but don't hack the pkg when you haven't even tried it yet. If you have, then you didn't give it much time.
I don't use C4D, but friends in production have and the stuff they can crank out more than compares to any other pkg.
Oh and nice model too! Keep up the good work!
C4D has a wicked material editing system as well as the beautiful rendering engine =)

Ya, but really for the price i would think stepping up to lightwave would be the way to go. Like 300-500 difference in cost.
It does some really nice stuff though. It's no crappy little prog for sure.

Thanks for all the comments! :)
The only problems I have with Cinema 4D are
1: the subdivision implementation isn't great
2: IK rigging can take a lot of time to produce the desired result.
Apart from that, I think it's great. Plus I have Bodypaint and the Dynamics plugin so they certainly add alot to its capability.
Will post updates real soon

Hey have you read of that new "superNURBS" plugin? It lets you set the degree of subdivision by painting a weight map. Maybe this helps and its quite cheap (10$). Adress is: plugin.medienbunker.com/supernurbs/ (http://plugin.medienbunker.com/supernurbs/) . Didnīt have the time to try it myself, but itīs looking good.

Eh, who cares what you use! This look great! You obviously have talent, so your app doesn't matter. It just means things will be that much better for you when you can swing a high end tool. :)
That character rocks and I love the sketch! Keep posting those pics.
Yeah man, nice work!
Could we see some wireframe screens?
puddlefish

Will post wireframes asap! Gotta work (real work, that is) today and tomorrow so bear with me. Keep the comments coming!! I'm thinking of using the cloth dynamics from 4D's plugin on the tshirt. Never really tried it with anything other than flat planes (flags and the like) and it's quite processor intensive for my poor little iMac:( . Does anyone have experience with this plugin? Can it handle more complex clothing?

PS, as regards the merits of Cinema 4D, it's incredibly easy and fun to learn. That's probably one of the most important things when coming to a new app in my opinion. I've only had 4D for about a month.
first to leigh comparing c4d to strata is the worst possible comparison you could ever make, c4d has to be the most stable and friendly package you could use, and still produce awsome results as seen with puddlefishs great goblin
and yes ik blows me hard

Great job. I get the sense of a mosquito form him. Maybe he could be holding a Bloody Mary and that's what he's so

Hi !
Nice goblin ! Will you rig it with golem ?

Never used Golem. what's it like? Does it interact well with 4D?

I'm thinking of entering this guy into the March challenge as an interpretation of the demon theme. Think it's worth doing? It might make me hurry up and finish him!
It was started the day after the opening date so it's within the rules. Do I have to start a new thread in the challenges section or can I transfer this one over there?
Nazgul

Hell yeah! Enter the challenge! It's very nice!
Keep it up!

Thanks Nazgul!
Solely based on that, I've now transfered this thread to the challenges section. All further updates will be made there:

No idea of what golem looks like !
I'm a Lightwave user, but I have a very good friend who works with C4D. He recently bought Golem, and AFAIK what he saw was very promising.
