View Full Version : Character: Viking Berserk
ClayMan 01-11-2003, 02:41 PM Making short animation about vikings, I'm going to make some variations of that model later so they don't all look same.. also more different weapons. I'm afraid that i have no time to texture that (military service starts) and if something is terribly wrong modeled, just let me know :)
here's first version of one of the most fiercest warrior been in the world:

Nice modelling, but I feel that to honor my own heritage I should point out a couple of things.
1: Lose the horns. Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets. It was something used strictly for ceremonial purposes. Never in battle.
and 2: The viking berserkers were called that for one main reason. The word berserk means to be in "bare clothing" in a rough translation. A "særk" was the word for a specific type of garment, like a tunic or a kinda shirt. What Berserk means is some one that goes to battle in nothing but their shirt. No armor of any consequence. Common among them was clothing made from bearskins or wolfskins.
They were also high as kites on a concoction made from a particular poisonus mushroom common in Scandinavia, which made them extremely agressive and almost immune to pain.
There is numerous sources online about this.
Other than that, I like what you're doing and I can't wait to see it textured and posed. Good work so far.

I know all that what you typed (except it was caused by mushroom),I've bookmarked loads of webpages of viking stuff, mostly all those are battle of Britain re-enacting stuff and I thought that nobody don't care/know much about Viking history, but thanks anyway. Let's call him Viking warrior then, shall we? :)
Here's little update:

Chainshirt have not been unwrapped yet i was just testing shader so ignore it, please. Also I make the metalplate material brighter too.

cool warrior:thumbsup: but vikings werent using solid armor plates, mostly just plain chainmail. also Berserk means "Bear Caped Guy" as for those who were wearing wolf capes they were called Ulfserks. also not all the berserks were using the mushroom stuff, many of them learned how to have a controlable epileptic seizure with made them highly agressive, immune to pain and weakness.
vikings never weared horns, they drank from horns (anciet Celt warriors had iron horns on their helmets)

He looks more a British Paladin than a Viking. But instead of that the model is pretty modeled. Nice work

Nice character! He really look good but i have to agree to the others. He do look more like a warrior from brittain than a viking. Thank god you took away the horns! It was the first thing that caught my mind.
Anyway...he looks great but he's not a viking. :wavey:

Very nice. Your modeling techniques are extremly impressive. I really like it. I too am facinated with viking history.
I have a few questions though:
What program did you use?
What modeling technique did you use?
Will you be able to make a short before your service beings?
Keep up that skill!

He looks even better now that you removed the horns.. Great work :D Maybe you should make the armor and clothing look weathered and war-torn? ie. dents, dirt, holes in clothing, etc :)
